[META/UPDATE?] PC - changes to the code 17/01

as fimacmo prompted, changes have been made to the site...mostly aesthetic changes to the code...

this means that they are getting read to start...

ill pots below the list of changes that have been made to each page...
starting with http://www.perplexcity.com/indexB.html...

heres the code for the page downloaded at 4th December 2004 17:37
Code:

<html>
<head>

<title>Perplex City</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
   background-color: #000000;
}
.style2 {font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; color: #CCCCCC;}
-->
</style></head>
<body>
<div align="center">
  <p>&nbsp;</p>
  <img src="indexB_files/pp7.jpg" usemap="#closeup" border="0" height="588" width="513">
<map name="closeup"><area shape="poly" coords="304,527,310,536,313,535,307,526" href="http://www.perplexcity.com/2718281828/"></map>

</div>
</body>
</html>

and heres the current code
Code:

<html>
<head>
<title>Perplex City</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
   background-color: #000000;
}
.style2 {font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; color: #CCCCCC;}
-->
</style></head>

<body>
<div align="center">
  <p>&nbsp;</p>
  <IMG SRC="images/pp7.jpg" WIDTH="513" HEIGHT="588" USEMAP="#closeup" BORDER="0">
<MAP NAME="closeup"><AREA SHAPE="poly" COORDS="304,527,310,536,313,535,307,526" HREF="/2718281828/"></MAP>

</body>
</html>

now we have to play a little game of spot the difference... Very Happy

1. before... img src="indexB_files/pp7.jpg" ...now... IMG SRC="images/pp7.jpg"
---tag has been changed to capitals for some reason---

2. before... usemap="#closeup" border="0" height="588" width="513" ...now... WIDTH="513" HEIGHT="588" USEMAP="#closeup" BORDER="0"
---again, capitalisation, and the order of the statements have been changed---

3. before... href="http://www.perplexcity.com/2718281828/" ...now... HREF="/2718281828/"
---capitalisation and relative address instead of absolute---

Slightly modded topic - Fi

the main page has been changed...
http://www.perplexcity.com/index.html

code before, downloaded 4th December 2004 at 18:25pm GMT...
Code:

<html>
<head>

<title>Perplex City</title><style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
   background-color: #000000;
}
.style2 {font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; color: #CCCCCC;}
-->
</style></head>
<body>
<div align="center">
  <p>&nbsp;</p>

<map name="letter"><area shape="poly" coords="61,18,54,29,50,40,55,52,67,58,84,56,98,48,103,38,105,25,101,15,91,9,72,10" href="http://www.perplexcity.com/indexB.html"></map>

<input name="email" size="25" type="text">
<input value="Submit" type="submit">
</form>
  <span class="style2">  </span> </div>
</body>
</html>

and now...
Code:

<html>
<head>
<title>Perplex City</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
   background-color: #000000;
}
.style2 {font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; color: #CCCCCC;}
-->
</style></head>

<body>
<div align="center">
  <p>&nbsp;</p>
  <IMG SRC="images/pp6.jpg" WIDTH="513" HEIGHT="588" USEMAP="#letter" BORDER="0">
<MAP NAME="letter"><AREA SHAPE="poly" COORDS="61,18,54,29,50,40,55,52,67,58,84,56,98,48,103,38,105,25,101,15,91,9,72,10" HREF="indexB.html"></MAP>
<br>
  <span class="style2"><br>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
  Please enter your email address. When the time is right, we'll be in contact again.<br>
  <br>
  </span>
<form method="POST" action="/cgi-bin/signup.cgi">
<input type="text" name="email" size="25">
<input type="submit" value="Submit">
</form>
  <span class="style2">  </span> </div>
</body>
</html>

It looks like there has been a sitewide change, of making constants all uppercase...apart from that, i see only two changes...

1. before... img src="index_files/pp6.jpg" ...now... IMG SRC="images/pp6.jpg"
---the directory of the image has been changed to 'images' instead of the 'index_files', *that is annoying, why didn't we think to find out if we had access to this directory, now we will never know*---

2. before... href="http://www.perplexcity.com/indexB.html" ...now... HREF="indexB.html"
---again, a relative url instead of the absolute of before---

there are a couple of insignificant changes, namely, reordering some type declerations...

So, uh... Does that last statement mean the game is starting soon or not?

hmm... too bad we don't know when it changed Wink
one thing i noticed (probably doesn't mean anything): the HTML in the new version is kind of ... sloppy: in indexB.html the DIV-Tag is not closed.

or its a tool like Dreamweaver doing a valid html check on the pages, and when the PMs did a sync of the site its "oh its changed" and re-uploaded.

another thing:
Quote:
1. before... img src="indexB_files/pp7.jpg" ...now... IMG SRC="images/pp7.jpg"
---tag has been changed to capitals for some reason---

more notably, the directory for the image has changed from indexB_files/ to images/

EDIT: i realized that sasund has already mentioned that in regard to index.html. oh well.

January updates

Could a moderator or SasunD make the thread title a bit more specific, please? We will be having many "changes to the site" days, as we already have (such as the Oct.8 update), and it is best to put the date of the changes in the thread title to keep people on topic. Thank you. And well spotted!

there, changed the title...
the changes might be due to the fact that we know they were hiring people to work on the site, so they got some better coder who changed the aboslute url-s to relative, cleaned up the code a bit (re ordering the tags), capitalised constants etc...

You'll have to take my word for it, but this directory has been "images/pp6.jpg" for at least two weeks.

Nice spotting man.

However, as already posted, it seems that they just re-run the whole site in some editor that uses all-caps (bad editor, I might add, since XHTML goes the other way around with all lowercase Wink.

I've been thinking for a while whether I should write something that looks at the source of all these pages every day and tells me if something changed... I'm still debating whether it would be considered brute force and a no-no or not.

I'm almost positive that doesn't fall under the brute force category. Brute force is like when you write a script to guess random strings of letters for a password or something.

I don't think it'd be brute force, either. There are two things that make brute force a "no-no." First, it can be very taxing on the server, which checking a website once a day for changes would not be. The second thing is that it's getting information you shouldn't be able to. You could, in theory, just look at the source yourself and see what changes. Having a computer do it for you isn't cheating.

*lol* Yeah. I also never understood why they emphasised every day in class the importance of taking notes, but then I got in trouble when I used them on tests. Stupid education system.
