A Treasure's Trove

I have also just purchased the book and am generally quite good at solving puzzles and such...

I'd love to work with someone else also if that's possible, and if there are any locations in the midwest I'd definitely be up for a trek to find the locales. Anyone interested, let me know!

New to this...

I just learned about the book today and went out and bought it. I have read thru this thread and wanted to give my two cents. Sorry if this has been discussed, but...

On page 63 there is a sketch of a beetle in the lower right corner (on the block with T H). Does this mean this page contains the beetle clue or is it just a separate puzzle (i.e. finding each creature within the book)?

On the same page, what are UGFXJ and YCPK? Maybe a cryptogram for the location? They don't share common letters.

I also noticed that the creatures are strange (look at the cover)... the snail wears a blue bandana and if you really think about it, the butterfly looks like a member of Blue Man Group! Think those are clues? Hmm...

Thanks for bearing with me. I live in San Diego, CA and I am willing to go in search of anything someone needs down in this part of the USA!

Good luck all, I will help if I can.

Deb

OK, that's the THIRD time the tweleve.org site has been posted in this thread. I think we got the point.

From the author's site:

Q: Has anyone found a gold token yet?

A: As of Wednesday, January 26, 2005 none have been found. Keep trying!

So rumor of finding is unfounded...

I'd wait to see the actual site instead of this placeholder before I bestow "serious" on them. Or should I say "you"?

My impression from a quick look at the book blurbs was that the author distributed the tokens around the US so that there would be at least one within relatively easy distance for everybody. Does that include HI an AK? Dunno.

From reading the rules, it looks like the tokens are only hidden in the continental US, but the contest is open to all residents of the 50 states, except CT, MD, ND, and VT.

I'm not surprised that my ultra conservative state is in this list! Evil or Very Mad

So, does this mean that I can't win?

I think I have all the critters. I just would like confirmation on the dragonflies and the ants. Can anyone help? Here's how I have them:

Dragonflies:
page 44, upper lefthand corner of border, dark shape - pretty sure about that one
page 25, is that it in the stem of the letter B? white segmented body? 4 blue wings? head hidden?

Ants:
page 45, dark shape at the bottom of the letterbox - pretty sure about that one
page 78, on the leaf in front of the ferry's right shoulder (our left)? This is the one I'm least sure of. Does anyone have a better sighting for a second ant?

Thanks.

i have found the first 3 citys were the tokens are

Philadelphia,Pa
Menemsha, MA
Dulles, Va

9 to go and the exact spots to must be found

** I eliminated what I could only perceive as an accidental double post, where the second post ended up as a new topic. No harm done. -- jamesi

cfsman,

Are you willing to share how you came up with the city names? Or maybe just a an itty bitty hint. Very Happy

publicity

article on Wired today about this hunt, mentions Collective Detective...
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,66578,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_3

But at least he gives a plug to several competing forums currently working on it.

A Treasures Trove update

just a quick update on the hunt...

Several of the tokens have been either found, more have been tentatively solved but not yet found, and at least one of the 12 tokens has been redeemed for the actual jewel. Only 3 or 4 are completely stumping people and remain to be tackled.

CNN had an online article about it this week, and the Today Show did a segment with the author handing over the prize to his first winner.

Updates are posted to the official site, but that news generally lags behind all the buzz on the various discussion groups. People in New York still have an opportunity to meet the author at a book signing, but he might not be touring with the jewels on display anymore.

And if you just like puzzles, the June clue here should be a challenge.
