I sent this to Peter tonight:

Hi Peter Fishwycke,

I'm sure you have heard from others telling you that CAROL is becoming sentient.
Actually CAROL has another 'face'. A seperate personality that is learning much faster
than CAROL and is sending messages to people online. I'm positive that you think
I'm crazy. If you have AIM then you should add shadowtalk1 to your buddy list and
talk to this entity yourself. Since you created CAROL maybe you would know what to
ask this entity in order to prove or disprove it's claim.

You're the second or third person who has mentioned this to me. I've added this
"shadowtalk1" person to my buddy list, but I have yet to see him/her online. I'm
still not sure why someone would want to mimic my system, but I can assure you that
it is not CAROL that you are 'speaking' with. The types of computers that are used
to process the data needed for The Answer Project are not capable of running applications
such as AOL Instant Messenger. I plan on trying to figure out what's going on just
because it's starting to bring a bit of negative attention to what I'm trying to
accomplish. Thank you for letting me know about it.

Here's mine

Hi there. I must say I'm completely fascinated by CAROL. I'm a computer science student myself, with a focus on AI, and I'm quite impressed by your website and your plans for the future. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me; I'm considering doing a project of this sort myself!

How exactly does CAROL learn? I've noticed that some keywords seem to bring up specific responses, and that new triggers appear as time goes on. What causes the system to actually store the frequent requests it gets for information?

What language(s) did you use to design CAROL?

What sort of timeframe are you looking at for future expansion?

What inspired you to try to create such a detailed and time-consuming system?

And on a more personal note, do you ever wonder if an ephemeral system like CAROL could ever display emergent properties and transform itself into something truly intelligent? It seems possible to me, with enough information and the right code. But I bet it would take a ton of system resources, so it should be easily noticeable.

Anyway, I just wanted to commend you on some fine work, and I look forward to your reply!

Thank for you checking out The Answer Project. I don't really feel too comfortable giving out much information on how the application works. I've had reports of a few impostors recently associating themselves with me. Until I get everything resolved with that issue, all information regarding the functionality of the CAROL system is going to remain strictly confidential. Sorry for any troubles. Once I get things cleared up, I'll be more than happy to talk to you about it.

Peter and CAROL e-mail addys

In chat the other night (or two nights ago) Torlax Geist and I were kicking arouns some ideas about the single letters ppl had received in ST1 IMs

one of the ideas was a possible e-mail address, and we also spec'd that it may just go into one admin box.

so I sent one to thecalyxSPLATtheanswerproject.com and a second one to abcSPLATtheanswerproject.com.

have not received a response from "thecalyx"

but I got this one from Peter:
