Ok, I have put together a simple spider program in perl to get a local
copy of any website you give it. Children pages and images can also be captured (right now the program asks you, for each link it finds, if you want to make a local copy of that page or not).

Anyone interested in helping with making this more useful?
Next steps involve:
~ once we have the local copy, compare it file by file with a 'reference' version, to see if anything changed
~ make a nice GUI
~ manage multiple such 'site images' (i.e. let a user make a new local image, tell the user when you checked each site last time, so on and so forth).

Evidently, the goal would be to set this up to run every so often automatically (but that's easy Wink so that we could tell when changes take place.

If interested, let me know!

I think they uploaded new versions of both index and thanks pages, or, at least, I don't remember this tag: "<META content="MSHTML 6.00.2800.1458" name=GENERATOR>" being there before. Other than that, I don't see any changes, let alone any significant changes.

the site has been modified again...
check http://www.perplexcity.com/tmp/ the parent directory has been modified January 27th 2005

Good find mate! At least we now know that they aren't fiddling the directory structure to prevent us noticing stuff going on. What's more, this is somewhat more concrete than the evidence already spotted seeing as it's right there on the site for us to read. Question is; if the directory reports as having been modified then what actually qualifies as a modification? Updates of the files already there? New files uploaded?

My personal speculation is that there's more stuff going into the root of perplexcity.com. I could possibly try a trick or two to maybe get a list of all files currently in there but I don't wanna peek behind the curtain (and I hope that if anyone else does they'll at least spoiler it, hint hint).

Now, if I was organising an ARG then I'd alpha-test all the files I was gonna upload on a standalone (or well-hidden) machine to make sure everything was peachy. I'd then upload the files to the server they're supposed to be on and beta-test them some more just before I was ready to put the game live. This is what I reckon the PMs are doing right now, so I'm now very hopeful that we won't have to wait until my original prediction for the start date Very Happy

Agreed - checked my copy of the files from the start of December and they definitely didn't have that META tag.

Never heard of wget before...guess I should look it up.
diff, of course, can be used to spot diffs.
I was actualyl thinking of making the whole thing work together... guess I was just a bit bored the other day, sorry Smile

Cheers,
and thanks for mentioning wget; I'll check it out.

Just to let you all know, with my clockwork technology (IE Synch tool) these sites have been updated. I last checked yesterday afternoon/evening. They have both been reported as updated this morning.

None of the accessible pages seem to have been updated. When look at the info for each page they all show the last update was Oct. 7th (oct 4th for indexB.html) So does this mean that other pages were uploaded that haven't been linked to yet?

Trout Smile SasunD already mentioned that (sorry - I've never called a trout before - it's out of my system now.....).

That's what I'd guess. Though note that all the cache files were updated on Oct 6th except 0595630738.cache which was updated on Oct 14th.

I'd be willing to bet that there's at least one other directory in the root of the site which we don't know is there yet. Could always try to guess the name of it to find it, but that would be brute force and thus against the rules.

i can't let that trout just sit there and stare at me Razz
my intention was to point out that while fimacmo's synching tool shows updates, the directory listing doesn't - so either one of these is wrong or the update was done outside that directory listing.

Ah, my bad. I'll reel that trout back in then (or am I stretching the metaphor way too much?) Smile

I think if you discussed the bait used, then YES, but otherwise you're fine.
