[Possible ARG?] The Ring 2 Haven't been around much since Metacortechs, but somebody on another forum pointed out these two sites and they smell like an ARG to me. I figure Dreamworks opened AI with an ARG and they're responsible for this one too.

It seems like this might be ARG-ish...but it also might just be a big goof that someone's having. The first site is directly linked to dreamworks...so clearly they're behind "the tape". The other site, the one with the message board and all the links and stuff seems like it would be where any ARG stuff would come into play. Although I did a quick search of the sites and the source code and didn't find anything odd there.
I watched "the tape" and several other videos on various sites and my phone has yet to ring and my picture isn't blurring (tongue planted firmly in cheek btw). There is some theory that you need to watch the analog copy to get the "curse", so maybe that's a good place to look for clues. There's a guy on their forums who will send you a copy for free...now who on UF wants to give up their address for this little experiment?

deaddrop article In this article , bill mentions the first Ring movie. I think people decided it wasn't a game, just an extended movie promotion. Maybe someone who was around then could comment?

I'm going to take this as movie promotion - they did similar things for Ring 1, so I guess this is just a repeat of what worked for them before. Besides, I can't see any PMs linking themselves so directly to Dreamworks (when you watch "The Tape", it says along the bottom, "Transferring data from www.dreamworks.com").

I think that I may try to get a copy of the tape as an experiment. Let's see what I get....
EDIT: I just e-mailed "tapemaster" about the tape with my snail mail address. waiting on a reply.

Tapemaster? The dude on the forums? I can't send him a PM because his box is apparently full:

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
1. tapemaster has exceeded their stored private messages quota and can not accept further messages until they clear some space.
Some of the links at she-is-here are to sites that I believe were associated with the promo for the first American Ring , like rose said. I emailed "Erika" at she-is-here asking a few questions, including one that may indirectly solicit a physical copy of the tape... I hope...
And that Jake dude looks like this actor that's in a bunch of Disney Channel movies my sisters watch all the time... Whatever. He's probably the character played by Ryan Merriman (IMDB), and thus probably has as much or more to do with the plot of the movie itself as anything on this site.

Just FYI, I posted that link because it specifically stated the rules for asking for a tape and one of them was not to PM the tapemaster...so don't be surprised if the mods yell at you on their forum because they seemed pretty p.o.-ed about people not following the rules. Just a friendly heads up.

It said not to PM Erika, not to not PM tapemaster. At least as far as I understand it... and I asked Erika an indirect question (via email) that only tangentially had to do with getting a physical copy. So I don't think I've offended anyone quite yet.
Also, hooray for Caterpillar 's post count atm

Back in the days of the first Ring they used to leave tons of copies at my job, like 6-7 a day. While I don't work there anymore, I can easily go around and see if that is going on again.

I got my tape in the mail last week but hubby wouldn't let me watch it before we flew. Sheesh. Anyway, it's at home waiting for me. It's an unmarked VHS tape, and it is the very short length (8 minutes?) promotional thingie - there's not much tape in there.
