Need Some Help...

I wasn't sure where to post this...I hope this is kinda sorta the right place...I need some help with my P.C....I've had several issues (kernel32.dll being annoying and the mother of all spy-bot's with RealSearch.Com) but, somehow I've lost the link to NotePad...I still have it on my PC, but I've lost the link...and this is REALLY annoying and pertinant because I can no longer right click and view source...which can really slow you down ARGing...anybody out there with an answer for an old dog willing to learn new tricks?

I'm not sure how to fix your Notepad problem but here's how to remove the Realsearch.com spyware. :

Perhaps if you remove the spyware the notepad problem will resolve itself. If not then you could always find the notepad.exe file and recreate a shortcut link in the appropriate place.[/url]

If you know when the problem started, I'd recommend using system restore to roll everything back. (Assuming you are using XP of course)

It's a lot easier than fixing those kinds of problems.

Or, if you have the windows XP install disk still, run a repair session.

Boot off the cd, and tell it you want to install windows (do not pick the first repair option as it's not really a repair session and won't fix anything). The disk will detect that you already have XP installed and ask if you want to repair it. This'll take a few hours and you won't lose any files.

I work tech support part time and we see some pretty screwed up laptops. One of these two methods works 99% of the time.

associating a text file with notepad

I can tell you what I would do on my Windows NT machine -- I can only assume all Windows OS's have a similar set of commands.

  • open a folder, you get a window
  • on the window's menu bar, select View->Options...
  • on that dialog, select the "File Types" tab.
  • Scroll down: do you see "Text Document" in the list? Edit it.
  • If not, you can add it by clicking the "New Type" button.
  • (you'll want the .txt extension, and the "open" action)
  • (confirm that your program is located here)
    C:\WINNT\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE

Could be behind Door Number 3

Well, from the problems you describe I am not sure any of these will help you. It sounds like the problem that you are having is in IE....you right click in a webpage, and there is no "View Source" option.

I had been having a similar, but not identical problem. I actually HAD the link to view source, but it didn't work. I did a little searching today, and all that was required to get it to work again was to empty the Temporary Internet Cache. In IE, Tools-Internet Options. General Tab[Temporary Internet files[Delete Files]] To avoid the problem in the future, you should probably reduce the size of the cache using the nearby Settings button.

So, the other option may be to go to the Programs Tab and see if Notepad is listed as the HTML editor of choice. If there are no choices in there, you might have to push [Reset Web Settings], but that is just a guess.

Finally, I know that SOME website operators have decided to DISABLE the right-click function. I think your only option in that case would be to use Firefox or some other non MS browser. Or an mget or whatever those crazy unix folk use.

Thanks to all on the suggestions...they were great!

Unfortunately they didn't work either...

I have the Millenium Edition and the resolve posted at Computer Cops is for XP...I don't have the options he's describing there...I tried using deviations of the process, but couldn't find any of the supposed bad folder's /files...

Catherwood had the closest system to mine and her soulution allmost worked for my Notepad problem....except that Notepad, even thou I know it still exists and is present, doesn't come up in the add/remove option...

So I don't know...it's frustrating...I'll keep plugging along at it...I can't go back in time because all the Go Back points are later than when my problems/ system were infected, so that's out too...and as for right clicking, I get the entire field of options including View Source, but when I click on it it comes up as Notepad not installed as default browser or whatever it said...

Arrrghhh!!!

Lol...thanks for trying anyways! Any other ideas?

what browser are you running? If you're using IE, install Firefox. It's got its own source viewer built in, separate from notepad.

try hitting [windows] + F to bring up the find files and folders dialogue, then search for NOTEPAD.EXE

if i recall, you'll find it in your c:/windows/system32 folder.

if you can find it's location in the system, you can right click on the actual file and choose sendto desktop (make shortcut) or you can right-click-and-drag to the desktop and it will give you the option to copy there.
