[META] Tools

I figured we could post links or downloads for tools that might help in working on whatever puzzles crop up. I created a Java applet for running Solitaire Ciphers for the VirtuCube puzzle, I thought it might come in handy here. Ciarin_H has been kind enough to host it for me here

I would appreciate any feedback on this. Or if anyone wants some other pre-loaded deck ordering (I'm working on Si Stebins now) just let me know.

I also find it helpful, since many of the tools are just webpages and not downloadable tools, to have a "Tools" folder in my favorites, under the folder for "Syzygy".

Everyone has their own thing. But this is my setup.

Favorites
-Syzygy
--Discussion (folder includes a link to this forum and the live chat)
--Game Help (folder includes links to wikis and game summaries)
--Websites (folder includes all in game websites)
--jpgs, gifs, pics, etc (folder includes all the gifs and jpgs and crap used by this ARG. Don't know how important this folder is. Kind of made it out of boredom and anticipation for this game to start)
--Game Tools (included in this folder are more folders categorizing the crapload of different tools used for ARGs.)
---Alphanumeric translators
---Code Charts
---Conversions
---Directories
---Encryption
---Location
---Referrences
---Steganography
---Wordsmithy (^If you notice I simply used the same category names used at http://www.unfiction.com/resource/otools.html but I still have them linked in my favorites for easy access and plus I've added some tool websites, like someone had a Stardate generator website here, that I added into one of the folders)

If you find this helpful in any way, great. This is just my set up, the way I find it easy to move around here.

Someone popped this one out there during ILB, but I think it may be appropriate to resurface it here:

Copy and paste this into your address bar of your browser...

javascript:void(_search=open('http://www.unfiction.com/resource/toy.html','_search'))

THEN, when you've got the nifty sidebar tool there, right click on anywhere in the blank (beige) space next to any of the links, click on "Add to Favorites..." and do just that, add it to your favorites. I use this thing all the time, not to mention, it's got a link in it going straight to the forums and to the unfiction chat server thingy. So, it's pretty darn cool/useful. Is it exhaustive, naw... but it does put things in pretty much the same order as listed by ArtherEld and You only have to "favorite" one link for it. Instant organization! Whoo-hoo!

Or add the sidebar to your IE/Moz bookmarks for insta-clicky fun! Very Happy (In Firefox's version of Moz, select "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" from the folder dropdown when the bookmarking dialog pops up, which is where it likes to store sidebar stuff.)

Is there anyway you could make that into a little fan kit so we can have that set up too? If not,it's alright.

Unfortunately I'm not that computer lit. I know basics. How to "create new folder" and put crap in the folder. That's all. I could tell you the specifics of what I put in each folder. But maybe I could find out from a friend how to do this.

Anyway, I'm gonna check out that thing Dork posted. Might even be better.

well, if you're using internet explorer, you could go to your fav's folder (C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\favs) and then copy your bookmark folder from there, upload it here, where we could download it, and copy it into our own fav's folders. im not to flash on where mozilla, firefox keep their bookmarks (i could look, but this whole thing started cos nyeh were too lazy to make our own neat list Razz ) so if you're using them there might be another similar way. kudos on the idea tho, im using something similar (in general for all my arg's) as it keeps everything in order, and you dont need to go crazy looking for a bookmark when there's an update etc.

also cool toolbar thingy from dorkmaster, something you should not go without. Smile

I found this webpage: http://www.bookfinder4u.com/isbn_search.html Not much of a tool, but I looked for something like it after I read about the first puzzle involving the ISBN of Pattern Recognition. Thought it might come in handy. Awesome tool kit that was posted earlier!

In case anyone is interested in an US Army Basic Cryptanalysis text, someone has posted one online!

http://www.umich.edu/~umich/fm-34-40-2/

At first glance, it looks like the appendices might be most handy!

On a similar note, GCHQ (Government Communication Headquarters) here in the UK runs competitions and puzzles to do with codebreaking on it's site and has some walkthroughs too: http://www.gchq.gov.uk/codebreaking/index.html
