Email from Phyllis Activity Report

Dearest Sunny,
Forgive me for lapsing in our communication for so long but, I have been
extremely busy. I have so much to tell you I hardly know where to start.
Firstly, thank you so much for your phone number. It makes me feel quite blessed to know that you trust me that much and I won't abuse that privilege, I assure you. If something ever happens that seems urgent or I feel myself losing my mind again, you can be certain I will call you. Oddly, I don't suffer loneliness. I think it was because I spent so much of my childhood isolated from other children...

Anyway, to continue my activity report, I've been to see a lawyer, someone I liked and trusted in the firm where Douglas used to be a partner. We talked about a great deal more than setting up the divorce. I was concerned, not only about becoming implicated in the Grand Jury investigation but, with the ramifications of Douglas possibly being involved in the manuscript "burglary." The last thing I need right now is being somehow complicit in an insurance scam. Let's say that Douglas actually sold the manuscript page to Mr. Penrose, then my filing an insurance claim with Mr. Penrose's assistance... well, you can see how that might put me in the midst of a conspiracy to defraud. But, my lawyer assures me that since I have no proof and have acted in good faith through-out, I should be all right in that matter. If it should ever come to a criminal inquiry, I shall be asking your permission to use our email correspondence as evidence of my innocence. However, it seems unlikely that Mr. Penrose will implicate himself by "blowing the whistle" on Douglas at this point. Regarding the Grand Jury mess, again, knowing nothing is my best defense. When I offered your suggestion about using re-dial to identify his callers, my lawyer said, "Oh, no, no, no!" I am much better off with only vague suspicions and no actual knowledge. Contrarily, I have been advised to start snooping through Douglas' papers to ascertain any hidden bank accounts or assets he may have for use in negotiating our property settlement. But, I protested, what if I find some evidence of large, unexplained deposits? We'll deal with that when, and if, it happens, was the reply. What a merry game these lawyers play! I am, it seems, better off knowing nothing while trying to find something.

Following the advice I was given, I have opened a separate bank account and have transferred the money from my shop account to it. As I sell off inventory, the money still passes through the shop account for tax purposes but, as soon as the check clears, I transfer the funds to my new personal account. I'm also slowly and, hopefully, imperceptibly, withdrawing a bit more from our joint account than I usually do and adding that to my "stash of cash." (teehee) I've contacted the insurance company as well to be certain that they understand that the manuscript page was part of the shop's inventory, not personal property, and to make that claim check out to me, as the sole proprietor, thank you very much. It should be coming within the next month.

What else did you ask about? I had forgotten that mention of me in Sarah's notes. Her comment struck me as odd at the time because generally people are more attracted to Douglas' aura of authority and have seen me as cold and aloof. It gave me a bit of a pain in my heart to think that she thought I was "nice." Poor girl. In some ways, we had a lot in common. I saw it in the painting I didn't share with anyone but, I don't really know. I only had
feelings...

And finally, the paranormal investigator I told you about should be arriving next week to drive the demons out of the house! I am so exciting really. It feels good to be doing something toward getting away from Douglas and all the misery I've suffered in this town. My plans are coming to fruition and I shall be free to be me – whoever that is. Ah, well, no telling if I'll be a musty, drab moth or a beautiful butterfly, the task at hand is busting out to the
cocoon!

Happily,
Phyllis
