Yeah, the cheaters weren't counting on me, at all. We got the flag out to the middle, and Silrn was doing his usual amazing job of just getting in there and touching the flag, but I was up in the totally empty base, and I had a feeling it would time out and return.

So I waited.

And ping! "Flag returned!" So I walked up to it, grabbed it, dropped down, and went out the back of the base.

No one ever really does that, so once they saw the flag was gone again, they scrambled to usual escape routes, which gave me time to jump up on that road ridge and get up the stairs right near our base, before I died.

And then my team mates got it the rest of the way, as I ran around with shottie and just blew the faces off anyone coming into the base. I really like being a meat shield at that point, because it REALLY makes a difference, those few extra seconds you can buy.

They were so mad! "What??? they got the flag???" "Where'd he go??" "OUT THE BACK DOOR!!!!!"

Hahaha, stupid cheaters.

It's odd that as much as I played that growing up, I never realized just how offensive the name really was until I saw it in print just now (although I hadn't really thought about it since I was 10). I do remember playing it under a different name, but I don't have the slightest idea what that might have been. We could call it "Gimpy." No particular reason why. Just sounds fun Smile

Yes, Gimpy would probably be a better name.

ROBOGriff, I'm still appalled at you.

I'm not happy about the name either, but I do not know of any other moniker. I hope I didn't offend anyone. I just wanted to ensure everyone knew the game I was refrencing.

I think (maybe) the more generic title of "Reverse Juggernaught", or something like that, is less offensive but a mouth-full.

Yeah I was probably guilty of calling it that name myself at some point with an age in the single digits. Again at the time I didn't put much thought into just what it meant. At my present stage in development, obviously, I'd call it something else. "Kill the Carrier" was what I heard it called sometimes, and it does sound like a fun game mode.

Hold up. I knew exactly what game he meant when he told me. No offense intended, but that's just what we called it when I was little. In our defense, everything2 says that the name goes back to before 'queer' meant 'homosexual'.

The funny thing is that we almost tied and/or beat them.

Well, I've been doing research, and it looks like TEABAGIN CHEATR was the main one responsible. He was doing it all night, with different teammates that when he played us. Though one of the players in our game Bootie Time, is in his clan.

It's okay, Griff. Well, not okay, but you know what I mean, yes?

I'm too serious about this to post an etymology post, but "everything2" is wrong. The fact that it has a history of common usage does not make it okay, any more than it made it okay for my grandmother's 92-year-old friend to refer to Brazil nuts as "n----- toes." We let it go with disapproving looks and raised eyebrows, since she IS, y'know, 92, and semi-senile. But that doesn't mean such usages are okay unless they're carefully placed in context.

All right. Moving on...

everything2 is also a user-run cooperative encyclopedia of, well, everything. I love everything2. I've been a user there for years now.

That doesn't mean it's gospel, by any means. "Queer" has been in use as a term to reference homosexuality since -at least- the 30's and 40's. The spectrum of negative and positive connotation associated with that particular usage has changed (a few times, really) since then, but I don't think any of us were playing this particularly harsh version of dodgeball before-the-womb, so ... Wink

I wasn't really offended, since you'll hear me say stuff that is certainly not PC or whatever, often in an effort to lighten the mood when the other teams get really nasty. I dunno. It was a total wtf moment.

He only used that title because it was the real name of it, not because he actually approved of the title...
