I can't beleive it. You got real life mixed up with ARG. The space elevator is being pursued by severeal companys, and is quite real. In fact, it was the cver story for the september issue of Discover magazine. This isn't ARG. But, kinda funny how desperate we are for more OC. OC=Crack?

Coming Soon indeed!

Ladies and Gents, we're now off password-protected status!

ORBICON.ORG and ORBICONCORP.COM have the same Orbicon Corporation logo.

Orbicon.org's title is just "Orbicon Corp." while Orbiconcorp.com's is "Orbicon Corporation - COMING SOON!!!"

Funny thing (and maybe it's just one of those things I've never actually heard of - of which there are many I'm sure)....but in the source code of Orbicon.org, it ends with

<!-- m -->

This is the exact same way the SC for Gaelph.com ends.

Does it have a certain html meaning? Or is it a sig?

If this isn't a part of Orbital Colony, it should be.

Did anyone get a copy of that .PDF? The Yahoo group's maxxed out it's quota. If you could post a mirror, or if you could PM me if you're willing to send it via email, it would be most appreciated.

Esp. considering the Yahoo group has only 6 msgs, and the first being Dec. 16th.

The PDF is a copy of the flyer and contains an "artist's rendering" of the "space elevator" looking down on earth from space. You can see it HERE or HERE.

From the flyer:
Quote:
Developers have submitted plans to build a massive space elevator in Williamsburg! This monstrosity, completely out of context with existing development in the neighborhood, will be accessible only to the wealthy, forcing thousands of average Williamsburgers from their homes and live-work spaces! Jobs the elevator will generate (operators, repairmen, astronauts) are certain to go to non-residents! Don't sit idly by and let this elevator cast its impossibly long, cold, and very narrow shadow over our homes! CALL 311 AND TELL THEM "I JUST DON'T NEED THIS SPACE ELEVATOR!"

Welcoming Yahoo post:
Quote:
Thanks for checking in on the Stop The Space Elevator message board!
We'll be posting more info as it becomes available, but things still
look to be in the planning stage. We're not clear on exact locations
yet, but Williamsburg is unquestionably targeted for this
superfuturistic blight, and if we want to save our neighborhood from
being exploited by these sorts of high-altitude shenanigans, everyone
must speak out!

The city runs a special information and complaint line at 311. Call
it today and tell them "I am opposed to the planned space elevator in
Williamsburg". It's best if you leave your name, but every call counts!

In the meantime, you can print out our flyer - it's in the Files
section. Hand them out, put them in coffee shops, post them on
community message boards. We need to get the word out quickly, so
this space elevator doesn't sneak in under the radar.

Stop The Elevator!

Saw the flyer near Planet Thailand the other night -- excellent!

It would probably sneak in over the radar, I would think...

And a bit of humor from Zort:
Quote:
Out here in Los Angeles, we face an even bigger problem. The local
authorities are currently assessing the feasability of installing
a "space escalator" in a busy residential area.

Due to the "escalating" costs of the war in Iraq, the original plan
to build a space elevator has been modified to consider the
possibility of putting in a lower-cost Space Escalator instead. As
everyone knows, escalators are slow, prone to break down, and you can
sometimes get your shoelaces caught in between the jagged teeth where
the stairs disappear.

We urge all citizens of Los Angeles to fight the Space Escalator
project, and band together with other groups fighting similar
developments in their own areas.

Still in monitoring mode.....

New message posted at the Yahoo group from savaleve:

Site only just created on January15, and the email addy is sort of intriguing - siriusspaceSPLATyahoo.com

[snip] "The Williamsburg Warriors were founded after discovering that most of the kids we knew and partied with here in Williamsburg have no idea what dastardly plans the developers have in store for the waterfront and surrounding terrain."

And if I had to hazard a guess, I might be inclined to think this is an attempt at player reg. (My main reason for thinking this is that you can even be from Canada and still send in this form against the rezoning efforts - but I may be way off base on this)

When you open scrap.gif (the pic of the "Warriors") in notepad, it doesn't look like the "usual" to me....is that normal? Usually I see so much "noise" it's hard to keep my eyeballs straight.....

space elevator consequences

from the Yahoo group:
Quote:
This is exactly what's so
appalling about the attempt of the space elevator industry to break
ground in this unassuming Brooklyn neighborhood. Where now we find
vegan cafes and vintage clothing, we will soon see only vast stretches
of carbon fiber and astronauts drunk on "earth leave".

This is entertaining if nothing else.
I've been thinking that we need a public service project here, maybe stopping the space elevator is just the thing we need.

btw: Gifford Miller is the Speaker of the City Council here in New York and it appeared to me that the form letter is set to go to his office. And the reference to "call 311" is to the number to dial for a city centralized, non-emergency information line. [/img]

Also listed in one of the flyers:

http://www.northbrooklynalliance.org/

A better designed site, with similar anti-Zoning alerts. Looks OOG though.

Agreed.

I'm not even sure if the Williamsburg Warriors site is in-game. They talk about mostly re-zoning projects a la NBA, not about the space elevator (IIRC). And their screenprinting link throws doubt as well.

If OC used the flyers as a means of introduction, it's quite possible that a group such as the Williamsburg Warriors could have jumped on the bandwagon.

The form letter to Gifford looks as though it does go to an actual gov mailbox.... I think.....

But the reg. date and the "feel" of the site......make me want to believe it's IG.

BTW....is that blurry pic of Scandal/Patty Smyth (The Warrior)?
And what's up with the big blue smiley?

Ya'll do realize that williamsburgwarriors is most likely exactly what it says it is. For those not from here, one of the biggest problems around here is the lack of affordable housing. In such a situation, certain types of people (generally artists, student, teachers, etc.) move into a less desirable neighborhood (although usually one with quick and/or easy transportation into Manhattan, as in Williamsburg) with lower rents. These people begin spending their time in this new neighborhood, and slowly become a part of the daily life there. This leads others that would not otherwise consider such a neighborhood to move in, bringing stores and restaurants that cater to them, followed by rising rent prices.

This is the process referred to as Gentrification, and is where Williamsburg is at right now, more or less.

The next step, of course, is to destroy all the things that made it an enjoyable neighborhood with character and history, and replace them with large buildings whose apartments rent for $2000 a month for a studio, with the price to buy such an apartment at around $300K. In the process, because these people are "revitalizing" the neighborhood, they are usually granted huge concessions, such as exclusive rights to public space, taz breaks, and the like.

Yes, I think it might be just that.

Still keeping one eye on it however : )

The Yahoo group is a riot, and they aren't taking themselves too seriously.....so either it's someone having a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun, or it's OC.

Hey All -

Not a space elevator, but 22-stories on North 7th between Bedford and
Berry is something to get angry about. In the event that you guys
hadn't heard about this meeting, please come!

William 44:

We are shocked to learn of such a thoughtless development. Looking at
the subject line of your message, I'm surprised you don't go more into
detail about this "finger" thing. In the context of North 7th Street,
a building constructed entirely of fingers will be both gruesome and
awkward. I simply cannot imagine the structural benefit of such a
feature, and hope that -- at the very least -- the fingers come from
the local community.

That having been said, I think it's important for this list to stay on
topic. Once we have some momentum on the HELLAVATOR (that gets
catchier every time), we should all sit down and discuss tall things.

Howard

And I went fishing this morning:

Quote:
Good Morning Mr. Bronco,

I have recently heard rumors and rumblings of Williamsburg, NY being on the short list as one of the initial site locations for space elevator technology. As one of the few companies who purportedly possess the technology, I naturally thought Orbicon Corp may have some involvement in the selection process of this particular locale.

I am trying to keep my pulse on the rather rapid forward movement of habitational and exploratory space development and would love to do a short editorial on your company. Can you confirm or deny these rumors or point me in the direction of someone who can?

An article reportedly in today's NY Sun according to the Yahoo Group:

Quote:
Imaginary Protest Takes NIMBYism to a Whole New Level

BY Staff Reporter of the Sun
February 3, 2005
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/8700

A group calling itself Fight Extremely Tall Space Elevators on the
Northside (F.E.T.S.E.o.t.N.) is making a parody of the, anti-development crowd in Williamsburg. The Stop the Space Elevator movement, which has a Yahoo! Group with more than 60 members, has been, posting 1950s-style posters warning against a colossal Martian elevator that would overshadow the Brooklyn neighborhood.

The poster reads: "Developers have submitted plans to build a massive space elevator in Williamsburg! This monstrosity, completely out of context with existing development in the neighborhood, will be accessible only to the wealthy, forcing thousands of average Williamsburgers from their homes and live-work spaces! Jobs the elevator will generate (operators, repairmen, astronauts) are certain to go to non-residents!"

The poster admonishes residents to "CALL 311 AND TELL THEM 'I JUST DON'T NEED THIS SPACE ELEVATOR!' " According to officials at the city help line, it's received no complaints just yet.

"Williamsburg is unquestionably targeted for this superfuturistic blight, and if we want to save our neighborhood from being exploited by these sorts of high-altitude shenanigans, everyone must speak out!" wrote bigwillysburg, chief cheerleader of F.E.T.S.E.o.t.N. on Yahoo! Groups.

Andy Goddard, the self-proclaimed chairman of HORWSE, or Humans OutRaged by the Williamsburg Space Elevator, begged Yahoo! Group members to "remember the Hindenberg! The Poseidon! The Towering Inferno!!! There's simply no way the Williamsburg Elevator will not snap at some point in the future ... leaving a sooty residue that will probably take weeks to clean up."

Another posting, from Fireplug, was a little more, well, grounded: "Plain and simple, it's all about real estate ... In three years, the entire bottom mile and a half of the elevator will be converted to luxury condos. I mean, just think how much they'll be able to get for a penthouse in the upper stratosphere with views that include earth curvature and eastern Pennsylvania."

Maybe the F.E.T.S.E.o.t.N. group is going too far. A view from the space elevator sure would beat a brick wall three feet from your window.

And BigWilly's comment on it:
Quote:
I'm not really sure where the New York Sun's interests lie (the Sun's conservative, right, so pro-elevator-development? I can never tell), but they were considerate enough to write an article about our cause today, which I will repost here. I'd like to correct one error in the published article, however; there is currently no indication that the elevator will go as far as Mars, so it's not technically a "Martian Elevator". I'd have a whole other list of concerns about that.

And you know, whether these things are in game or out, I'm having a hoot getting in the "mood" for OC.
Very Happy

I mean they even have people (as far as I can tell by my digging) from Liftport posting now......and it's getting amusingly nasty.

Funny stuff....... Very Happy
