IP Address in first email (189.244.0.1)

Do you smell that? Smells like ILB.... Smile I'm think we can safely assume CN = ChatterNet and CP = Chatter Protocol.

The first email from Lenny's blog. Bold emphasis is mine:

This IP address has been bugging me. It's a valid class B address, yet no host responds to it. I get no response from a traceroute or ping. I get the following from a whois from whois.arin.net:

# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's WHOIS database.

So it looks to either be reserved or unassigned at the moment. Yet, from the email, it looks as if the IP is what the girl is connecting to. In this case Lenny's IP.
According to iana.org, the port numbers given (72, 120 and 112) aren't really used anymore. iana list them as follows:

Port 72:
netrjs-2 72/tcp Remote Job Service
netrjs-2 72/udp Remote Job Service

Port 120:
cfdptkt 120/tcp CFDPTKT
cfdptkt 120/udp CFDPTKT

Port 112:
mcidas 112/tcp McIDAS Data Transmission Protocol
mcidas 112/udp McIDAS Data Transmission Protocol

I don't know of any software that uses these ports, and this entity could be looking for ChatterNet port numbers, so this could be moot.

Any thoughts?

Nice work, I think you have a lead. I'm going to do some searching around to see what I can find out about the software that uses these ports, and maybe we can keep trying the ping on this IP address.

Details about this protocal can be found here: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/software/mcidas.html

From what I can gather, it is typically some kind of metorological (sp?) protocal.

CFDPTKT is message used in the Coherent File Distribution Protocol which was designed to speed up one-to-many file transfers (e.g. broadcasting operating systems to diskless workstations)

More info can be found at http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/rfc/rfc12xx/RFC1235.html

The Remote Job Service looks like it was part of the old ARPANET comms protocol

There's a lot of comments on how it was used in docs like http://www.apps.ietf.org/rfc/rfc325.html.
