Hi

Just started looking - very new to all this.

The picture on Lenny's Blog seems to show a backwards vampire dog - there is a reflection of something, on the left, but nothing on the shoreline to be reflected.

Don't know if it helps..........

I did a quick search on this - please feel free to trout if it has been mentioned before.

Having the extreme misfortune of missing ILB, I don't know if this has been proven to be incorrect.

SPEC: IF the fragment that ended up here broke into additional fragments, could it be possible that there are some previously unknown fragments?

SPEC: Couldn't the "Duga" fragment have also borken into previously unknown fragments?

SPEC: Could this be a plot by the "Flea" thing and it's friends to get us to help with their "invasion"?

I'm running over my first convo with Lenny. He wanted to know about Melissa, a lot. I do remember that the flea and the spider were left behind.

A question. Certainly if, say, a Harry Potter ARG was cooked up, legal battles would ensue. But that's because he belongs to JKR, who has published him in a copyrighted work.
Did 4ourty 2wo ever use their characters in a copyrighted work? it was all published on a free domain...
Eg, thinking this through. All the characters on the AUDIO were copyright 2001. I guess that means Melissa, too. So far, Melissa hasn't been brought in as a character (just someone talked about) so I *think* we're good.

Still, this is exciting. I can't wait to see what happens next....

These are remnants of another *one* like me
*they* were here before me...

How is this so? This happened 9 years ago.

I'm fairly sure they did. Regardless, ILB was set in the Haloverse, and used concepts (like the exact natures of the AIs) that were specific to Halo. They did so with express permission from Microsoft and Bungie. I'm not sure which company owns the rights to the intellectual property, but that's irrelevant: one of them does. And considering the nature of ILB -- a marketing tool for one of Microsoft's biggest money-makers -- I'm pretty sure they have a compelling interest in protecting their copyright.

I don't think merely mentioning Melissa constitutes an actionable violation, but the use of the payphones/calls from an AI might. 4orty 2wo has been pretty lenient. They've allowed the DVD content to be torrented and copied and distributed by players. Thebruce has been working on an online novelization of the ILB audio drama, but then again, he may have requested permission, and it's fairly clear that Creepy... constitutes a tribute and is not being done for any sort of profit, whether financial or something less tangible.

It's NOT clear, at this point, what the intentions of the people behind Lenny's Xanga are. Maybe it's intended as a tribute; maybe it's an attempt to coast of ILB's creativity and popularity.

But in any case, I hope they covered their bases, because if they bring in the Flea or the SPDR, they've crossed the line and may have invited legal action. The 4orty 2wo team are nice people who are very interested in maintaining good relationships with the players. I'm not sure the same can be said about Microsoft.

Stepping in here, and speaking as one of the PMs for a game that danced around the jealously guarded IP of the Matrix Universe, I can say this:

As players, this is really none of our concern. If any action will be taken by anybody, it will, or wont. Since we know nothing of who's behind this or what agreements may be had, it's all really a moot point of discussion around these here parts. Smile

FWIW, the Wachowskis and Warner considered Project MU to be in the category of fan fiction. From an article on Metacortechs and ARGs in general in The Scotsman:

Quote:
"As long as the 'fan fiction' is not in any way connected to commercial enterprise, as long as it is not offensive and doesn't degrade our intellectual property, we generally take no action," said a spokesman for Warner Bros., after looking at the game.

This is all ground that has been well covered before, so I'd suggest not worrying about it, unless of course it's just in your nature and you can't help it. Wink

Here here!

Edit: Lenny has updated his Xanga. GPS coordinates? I'm emailing him to ask for some of them!

It seems that an opening to further the discussion with this Voice would be to talk about Melissa. Siren, maybe it's time you give your cousin a crash course in ILB, especially the parts that pertain about Melissa. Wink

I'll get to do that soon enough. I'm going to be visiting him in the coming weeks, so we'll be able to do that.

Excuse me:

A few HUNDRED gps coordinates? depending on when these are going off, (like one per day) this just doens't strike me as something a novice PM can do ( I know, don't judge appearances, but still)... that takes some teamwork.
Still, its just an assumption. I never picked up a phone for ILB, maybe I'll get a chance this time. It's odd that they didn't set up a site of some sort ( a creative way of giving out the GPS, other than an email we can't see), but perhaps they will make up for it with other new features... we can hope.

My worry is how difficult it was for us to get someone out to Philly. Now we need to do all that for a few hundred other locations? The reason this worked for ILB was they had a GIGANTIC base of players.
I dunno... maybe its time to start paying reallllllly close attention to the credits at the movie theaters...

From Lenny's blog:

Wednesday, February 09, 2005
"I received an email last night, all of which was coded in Hex, except for the first line which stated that the database had been completed. Encoded within the hex were AT LEAST a few hundred GPS coordinates..."

I don't know of what to make of this- is it a rip off of ILB or homage, or something sanctioned by 4orty 2wo.

I don't know if I want to put the same energy that I put in playing ILB chasing after all of those phones. Been there done that. I loved ILB but I would like something different in flavor like the Beast and ILB were.

I've been doing that ever since I heard of ILB! My family thinks I'm crazy! Standing in the lobby at the theater and staring at a poster for 15 minutes! Laughing

so we've got 100's of coordinates, we are going to have to get a sizeable portion of the ILB community back together to handle this. thus far it appears that we have no timetable though, so were essentially waiting on Mike (the guy who answered the payphone) to be contacted by one of the AI sisters on his e-mail or for Lenny to get more info on the coordinates like corresponding times?
