They appear to be instructions to draw the letters in "BEANIE". The first line is how to draw a B, second an E, etc.
Put your pen on the paper and imagine walking it off, following those directions with your pen. Just remember, when you walk backwards, your left and right remain your true left & right. Always face the direction you are walking, unless you are walking backwards. Hope that helped.

I'm attaching a jpg for the way I got it to work - though I'm still not sure if this is the right way to do it or not.

Assuming I did this correctly (please, someone check my work, as I did this between finishing lunch and returning to work)...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dragon / 1 / Water
Horse / 2 / Spirit
Rat / 3 / Earth
Tiger / 4 / Fire
Snake / 5 / Air
Which, going through the maze gives is KCDIONLHWWXRLMF.
The resulting letters do not seem to work as a file or directory, which means either (1) I am incorrect, (2) there is an anagram at play, or (3) there is some other encoding.
...back to work.

Brian, you probably just transposed by mistake:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
KCDOI NLHWW XRLMF
EDIT: While Brian's post lists the letters in their correct order, I apparently made the same mistake that *someone* behind the curtain made. Instead of following the gray path, I took a simple path by rows. Using that incorrect string of letters took me to a working solution page, as Rowan has posted below. The answer has since been corrected.

Congrats to cather for getting the final solve:
Congrats to everyone who made a puzzle and to everyone who helped solve them. It was a lot of fun and I for one look forward to seeing the winning puzzles in a future ARG.

Ok, well I would have had it about ten minutes ago, but I didn't know how 1-5th position lined up (left to right, that is)...
I was thinking like a horse-race, and had it like this: (as if the horseys were coming at me)
(spectators)5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 (Inside track)
Although now in retrospect, I see how it depends where you're sitting in the grandstand.
Edit to put a real smiley face instead of old skool junk.

So was it my breath? I ate a tic-tac...
I didn't mean to clear the room with my presence... really!

Good job, puzzle-creators and puzzle-solvers! I especially liked the new and interesting twist of adding letters to the symbolic logic problem at the end.
If anyone wants to know more about the DNA puzzle, I wrote up a bunch of details in my original contest entry including encoding mechanisms (for re-use within a given game) and optimizing the length of the message (for difficulty--prime is easy, composites get increasingly more difficult). The full paper is online .

Sorry about the error in the last puzzle, guys. I'm glad that you figured it out though. I had to change it to fit a puzzle trail, and that was sort of last minute...
Kender, in case I didn't say it before... DAMN. I LOVED your maze puzzle. I only wish that the answer was something that we couldn't have guessed. I feel cheated. We missed like half the puzzle!
Thanks Bill, for sponsoring the contest. I really enjoyed it, both submitting and working the submissions.
You know, we need to do more of these...
Until next time.
