Email Phyllis and the Pine Barrens

Dear Sunny,
I now have the time to reply to your emails and a few others. We didn't go out to the Pine Barrens this afternoon. Instead Wes Keeler called back and we made arrangements to go out there on Sunday. I shall prove my usefulness by packing a picnic and lots of insect repellent. I believe I shall find the time tomorrow to drive out to the outlet mall and buy a pair of hiking boots and some jeans for the excursion. One must always be appropriately attired, don't you think? I haven't owned a pair of jeans since college so the mere prospect has filled me with youthful vigor.

Iris' crew has set up cameras in the studio and shown me how to activate them in case Sarah's artwork reappears. We were so hoping they would bloom at dusk like moon flowers but so far nothing. Iris and crew have gone off to the B&B. She is going to be writing up a report for the news feature on the Aglaura site to let everyone know that she's available and not here just for me.

The attic was rather disappointing in that I was hoping for great piles of
stuff to be sorted. Instead I found a vast empty space illuminated for four
dormers, two front and two back. One could almost turn it into a ballroom, I suppose. I took a high-powered flashlight with me and scanned the dark corners. I hit pay dirt with the discovery of a crumpled slip of paper that spelled out "Alec" in a hand-written cursive. Actually, the name could have been longer because the extension of the "c" ran on until it was cut off by the ripped edge of the scrap. Still, I was quite excited and shared my prize with Iris before they all left.

Just as I was preparing to start dinner, Douglas called and informed me that he had to go out of town "for business" and wouldn't be back until very late tonight. Thus assured, I had another go at his office and boldly attempted to access his laptop. But, there is a password and I cannot get past it. I've tried our birth dates, anniversary date, "A," and "Alec," even "Donna" without success. I don't know what else to try.

Now for your suggestions and questions: When all is said and done, guess who I intend to offer first bid on this house? Give up? Agatha, of course. I only want what I have put into it so it will be a bargain price all things
considered. As for her being my "contemporary," my dear, I am closer in age to her son! I believe we could have been friends because of our mutual love of literature but that's about the only thing we have in common. As for someone looking out for me, I think she would be quite useless. Iris, Chris and James are here and in a better position to help me than anyone else in town.

As for what the "J" stands for -- that, dear one, is my ace in the hole. I
never used it before and that's what made it so effective. Jackass! You do make me laugh! I can't wait to say "Portal Potty" to Iris and her crew tomorrow. I shall, of course, give you due credit. Fortunately, we do have two other facilities. Like most old houses, there was only that one. But, in the renovation we added another off the kitchen and installed a deluxe bath in the master suite. So, I'm not going out in the backyard and resorting to what's left of the original outhouse by the garage, thank goodness. First thing in the morning I dare say I'd do battle with the demon if that were my only option for relief. Now, you must tell me what "LOL" means. Is it "Lots of Laughter"?

I shall keep you informed of tomorrow's events.

Love,
Phyllis

Email Phyllis and the Blazing letter A

Dear One,
I am so glad that you have back-ups but I still want to hear from all of my new associates because everyone mainly asks different questions. Everyone has a different idea or question I hadn't even pondered. As our dear, fallen Martha Stewart would say, it's a good thing. We need as many ideas as possible when we are dealing with mysteries this convoluted.

I want to stress that Iris is not opposed to answering your emails. Now, that she knows and understands she is very receptive. Iris has to be sensitive in her avocation and she wasn't prepared for how extremely weird the mysteries in Aglaura are. And, one of the mysteries, dear friend, was who are these people who care so much, why are they bothering me? I told her it was like having a fan club only most of them don't really like you. I could go through my deleted file and pull out hate-filled diatribes, unfounded accusations, and cruel epitaphs. And, I replied with outrage and anger, how could I not? Now, I simply ignore that kind of thing and hit the delete key which was my advice to Iris. You haven't met her. There is something extremely engaging about her openness. From the first moment I shook her hand I trusted her and thought, here, at last, someone who can really help.

Having mental images for these spirits is incredibly helpful. When I encounter a cold spot now, I say politely, Hamilton, is that you? You need to let go, dear, and move on toward the Light." If the response is anger, I know it is him or Amelia; if fear, the little girl. I made the mistake of looking into the hall bath this evening out of habit and had a moment, I must say. The room is long and narrow with a small window at the end overlooking the backyard. It was dark in the room and outside but I clearly saw a blazing letter "A" in the window panes. I jerked to look around, thinking it might be a reflection in the glass, but it wasn't, thank goodness! If something was manifesting behind me, I would have screamed. When I looked back, it was gone and I slammed the door shut by pure reflex. I think I just imagined it because I've been fixated on finding more A's. I don't exactly know why either. It just feels like something I can do and therefore, should do. Does that make sense? I believe I am being guided in a way. If I have the chance, I think I'm going through the garage tomorrow.

Well, I am feeling rather tired and it's approaching my bedtime.

Tomorrow, dear,
Phyllis

Phyllis to me

Dear Barbara,

I have been desperately trying to recall some kind of clue from what I
saw last night in the studio but nothing comes clear. It was splotches of color and scribbles seen through tears and hysteria and I was quite concerned about Douglas. I may never have loved him or even liked him but he is a human being and I was desperately engaged in his well-being. Like Iris being disappointed in herself for not taking photographs, I am also at a loss as to why I didn't sit there all night studying every detail I could discern. Instead, I was exhausted and all I thought was I shall study it all in the morning. I shall not make that mistake again, I assure you.

My, my, you investigators have eyes and ears everywhere, don't you? I
am most impressed by your having some access to Don Marzano's office. I really could care less about whether this Donna is Douglas' mistress although it would be useful in the divorce proceedings. But, if she is a go-between, as you say, why on earth would she call here in the middle of the day? Perhaps, she dialed the home number by mistake. Otherwise, one might think she wanted me to know and that makes no sense.

I don't think we know enough to even guess what the "A" and "Alec"
slips mean. Considering I found one crumpled up in the attic, it hardly seems useful for establishing a meeting.

Going to the burned remains of Dale's home has already been discussed
and we plan on making that excursion next week. Everyone is much more eager to explore the old compound and the plan is to do that on Sunday.

I am going to answer your other email separately because it deserves a
specific response.

Yours,
Phyllis
