Perhaps there should be a different thread for the naming of us. I'd like to keep this one full of wild spec about the video until tomorrow when we can wildly spec about the USA Today thing.

Speaking of wild spec, Cat's photo does look similar to the start of the movie, what with the colorful sign and what looks like a bridge further up, but as some of us figured out from trying to find the same skyline that was futured on indexB, perception of buildings from different hieghts can WILDLY differ.

Wow, I used wild three times in this post... make that four.

I'll be waiting at 5 in the morning tomorrow for a USA Today - and I know that every time I pass a person carrying that newspaper I'm going to wonder if they're playing too. (a cuber? cubist? whatever.)

Expect high res scans ASAP!

Woooooooooo! Very Happy

I get The Times delivered so I'll scrutinise it in stupid detail on the 23rd. I'll also take a closer look at the vid in terms of hidden stuff (I do speak and read a little Japanese and I can manage the Kana) but I'll have to sober up a bit first - tomorrow.

P.S. did I say woooooooooo?

it definitely matches up with Shinjuku. heres a side by side enlarged pic of the red/orange sign at the beginning.

p.s. i'll be able to pick one up tomorrow, and get a high res scan as soon as i can.

I had found this photo on a page which identifies it as being in Shinjuku district, and the vertical kana matches the still frame posted earlier (on page 2 of this thread).

I'll go grab my kana dictionary...

Don't think this has been mentioned yet:

While the narration continues as the video fades out to show the dates and newspaper names, the street footage freezes - after each fade out it cuts back in at the exact same spot.

Dont think its trout at this point, but kick me if it is.

It appears the video is leading a clue and pointing to it. And the clue is MUSIC.

Let us look at certain words.
Rhythmn
period
lessons
counterpoint
sharp

remember how the first time is mentioned counterpart then the second time is counterPOINT.

A counterpoint in music is a secondary melody which offsets the main melody.

In this case, the harp is doing the counterpoint.

just an idea to play with, especially since these words seem to be stressed more heavily, to draw attention to them.

This is incredibly exciting! I'll pick a copy of USA Today on the way to school, and I should be able to post what I find from there, but I'd have no access to a scanner.

Wow. The video is truly amazing, and definitely worth the wait. As I understand it we are now some hours away from the 17th feb edition of usa today?
If it comes out 5am, i make that 7 hours or so, east coast time. Perfect, time for everyone available to crack and squeeze every little detail out of the clip.

been waiting soo long to say this it, begins.

to the google-mobile!

my current spec: Parallel Universe
They are earth in another dimension if you will, same history but also different outcomes to major and maybe minor events. this strongly reminds me of john titor (if it were time travel, and even if its not). if anyone remembers, the idea of traveling back in time you merely travel to the point you wish to get to in an alternate universe. you don't visit your own earth- but a parallel version of it.
So the changes you make (ie the paradox of killing your parents) don't actually affect you, but your future self on that parallel earth, ala back to the future, creating a divergence or a split in futures (confusing to explain but if you want more look into the john titor hoax). likewise whilst many things are the same on the surface, there is always a % of difference.

the woman in the video talks of counterparts on the otherside of the curtain, (it is most likely curtain, but i like the idea of curve better, sounds more science fictiony Wink)
Our researches have instead, come to identify very strongly with their counterparts...

hmm, would suggest to me, that if it is a parallel world then there would be a henrik tanner and a lyssa ling or sarah covington, here in our world, but that due to these differences they are not working at a hi-tech facility investigating and researching parallel worlds, but they could be leading very different lives, (and thus be introduced as characters later Smile )

this ties into the mention of culture shock very curious that the video is of japan, and she ends it with culture shock.

well japan is a nation split into two very different ideals. not only of late, but ever since its technology boom, it has been growing outwards and upwards, as you see in the video: big cities, skyscrapers, flashing lights. this deeply contrasts to its peoples history and heritage. the old ways of life, customs and traditions, many which have been lost or commercialised.

let's ask ourselves, why is the video then of japan, esp Shinjuku? (as cat mentioned Smile)which is a very modernised hub of information. perhaps the japan the speaker knows in her own 'world' paints a very different image. okay random wild spec.

time to rerererewatch the clip, et attendre la prochaine jour avec l'impatience! Laughing

John Titor? Are you a fellow Coast to Coast AM listener?

Anyway, here are two bits of completely wild speculation. First, regarding culture shock and Japan. Maybe in the mirror-world, the balance of power in the world is such that some English-speaking cities (London?) here are Japanese-speaking cities (Perplex?) there. Or, more mundainly (Sp?), maybe they just mean that conversations with us about history get really confusing really fast.

Am I the only one that thought "their counterparts" might just generally mean people from this world, rather than alternate-reality dopplegangers?

Secondly, I was thinking about William Gibson's Pattern Recognition from the pregame, and those blank black spots in the video. I'll try to make this un-spoilery, but just in case....
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In one piece of the Footage, there is a bit where the image becomes solid white for a second. Some guys in Tokyo manage to extract from this a very complicated and important image. Is there a way that an image could be hidden in these black spots? Was what happened in the book actually possible?

It is nice to see some activity here. I have been waiting for this to begin for sometime. My point of interest is the newspapers that were selected only US and UK papers and when added with the text of the voice I see a different picture. "The simularities between our peoples are truely profound." (we have taken) our shared histories and learned from it completely different lessons." This, when taken in the context of current international relations seems to be a comparison of the differences between the US and the UK. Though far from the inter dimensional enigma that Sente originally posed it is maybe a possiblilty.
I am new to this and didn't get too far in the pregame(beyond the letters) so let me know if I am in left field.
