I think you hit on something very important there. We haven't really discussed the driving force behind all of this: MONEY. Whether it's the game developers, video game retail stores, game rental stores, etc, they are all concerned about making money first, and the everything else second. Think about the effect the discussed legislation would have on video game sales figures. They would drop. Thus the above mentioned profiteers would not like to see legislation in the first place. It's hard for them to put morals above money, especially when the morals are costing them money.

I have to throw this in for arguments sake. What about the people creating law suits against the video game companies? If the legislation is passes then the game compines would be less liable for an instance where a minor is playing a mature game, and thus their law suits couldn't bring them as much money. People who think violent content shouldn't be in video games, period, may end up with a weaker leg to stand on.

Yesterday, I was asked, in the entire 7.5-hour day, to make a single copy. A single 1-page copy. Single-sided.

And yet, they paid me to be here all day. Dunno

I know they're trying to go easy on me because of the accident, but geez.

Yah for me it's just the fact that I'm transferring depts in a week and 1/2 and have handed off all my project and for some strange reason am not getting any new ones Wink I'm sure I'll be swamped here once I get settled in my new job.

Heh. For me the mistake was telling the lawyers I work with my LSAT score. I probably should have lied about it. Now they don't want to give me anything "too boring" so they don't give me anything at all.

And then, since the accident, it's been just absurd.

I'm just a software engineer on a project that has been ramped down (survived the lay-offs, yay!). I have already finished my work for the week and have to stay here even though i am paid on salary because the govenment makes us bill them by the hour. so eventhough i am all done i have to put in 40 hours. stupid if you ask me.

I think the video game industry's concerns with money go beyond just retail sales. I expect the video game industry to be concerned with making money reliably. They want to be able to predict what it will cost them to operate and how much they can reasonably expect to earn. Video game violence legislation introduces an unknown that they'd just as soon avoid. Liability lawsuits also add uncertainty and costs, even if the video game industry wins the lawsuits. I suspect the video game industry would accept --and even tepidly support-- a law that made it easier to predict future business, especially if the law provided some cover against liability lawsuits.

Such legislation runs counter to my personal preference. I would rather keep the government out of it. Right now, I can limit my daughter's exposure to violence in video games in my house, but it gets murkier when you add XBox Live and similar services. I can't control what other people say and do online. Since I can't figure out who is old enough to play, I have no way to excuse myself from inappropriate games with kids, the way I would in real life. I would really favor technological and procedural approaches that allow adults at least the opportunity to act responsibly.

I could imagine an icon beside each person's name on XBox Live that means 'OK to play mature/teen/adult games'. XBox Live could verify the person's birthdate or current age by some reliable means. Like the 'Bungie.NET' marker beside gamer tags, participation could be optional. Gamers could use the icons to decide with whom they would play non-'E'-rated games. I would love to see the finger/age scanners in use, but I fear the expense of adding support for them would scare off XBox Live and end users.
