IRC is intended for group chatting, with the added ability for private messaging. IM clients are intended for one-on-one conversations, that sometimes (clumsily) support group chat. When you're trying to collaborate as a group in real-time, IRC is teh winnar, especially since you only need a server and channel name to connect, and aren't reliant on someone's username and availability.

I've not heard of connection problems with IRC, other than restrictive firewalls that block out all chat protocols. In the case of IRC, this can be circumvented with CGI-IRC; AFAIK there's no equivalent for any of the IM programs. The only connection problem that you get with IRC and not with other chat programs is that IRC requires you to have some tiny amount of knowledge about what you're doing, and that's a problem with the user rather than the protocol...
Also, IRC is distributed in such a way that it pretty much doesn't go down; the IM programs all seem reliant on central servers, which go down accidentally too often for my liking, and occasionally block third party clients on purpose.
And there's a load more programs for IRC than any other network (clients, servers and utilities like stats generators)
Hence, IRC wins. Although I still use jabber when I want to just message one person at a time, because point & clicking is easier than typing /msg in IRC ^_^

You can point and click in IRC. At least, you certainly can with mIRC. Double-click the person's handle, and it'll open a private chat window. I'd expect other IRC clients to do something similar.

I like that screenshot, first because of the lack of Windows taskbar, and secondly because I'm in it. So clicking those names doesn't do anything? Does that even have windows for PMs?

...Yes, exactly. (Though I would be equally impressed if it were Litestep or something, which is still Windows, but without the suck. That's what I've got.)

It's hard to explain, I've filled this text area ~4 times over and kept deleting it all because it was being complicated... In short, to answer the specific questions with as little explanation / rambling as possible:
1) No, irssi is a text mode program running in a console; a console being a program that lets non-graphical programs work in a graphical environment -- all work is done with the keyboard. Note that linux's text mode does more stuff than windows's graphical mode, so don't think that all text-based programs are crappy MS-DOS :)
2) Sort of -- irssi has lots of tabs, of which I've set it up to display two at a time; when the /msg command is used to start a PM, a new tab comes up. Active tabs are changed with alt-[number]. As demonstrated, having two tabs displayed at once and only one input line gets confusing when I'm active in both channels at once >:/
ED> Thanks to moral support of random people; I'm starting to get over my compulsive pimping of enlightenment; the window manager I use because... goddamnit I'm going to stop typing now >:(

I love what? heh. I just got the latest on the london times ad, and exclaimed to my wife in glee "Game on!!" and she asked me "oh great. what do you love now? not bees anymore I guess?"
So then i thought ... we don't really have a good phrase to go around babling about. except i guess "Perplexing."
Sound bytes, PMs! we need sound bytes!

question about chat
Hey, I'm back after getting rid of my old crappy computer which was infected with viruses but was really just an overall crappy computer. I'm super happy for this one. Though I know nothing of computers. I'm just glad I can watch dvds on this one now.
Anyway my question is I can't get into IRC. Is there something I need to download? Or what?

Minor announcement: The IRC search can now be used for all the channels that lumberjack is logging. Currently this is just #syzygy and #unfiction, more can be added if people want and the channel's ops are OK with it.
