665

Some of you may know of a site called 665. Several years back the webmaster of the spaced decided to simply create a list numbered from 1 to 665, and, whenever the need struck him, would post an update with unpredictable content on the first available number, starting at one. This page continued on for years until he finally reached 665, at which point the page end. This was in about December of 2003.

Several years ago, while the site was still in a state of being updated regularly, my friend and I found a small hidden link on the main page which led to http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret13.html, which has an image with hidden text in it and is otherwise entirely covered with meaningless binary. A single digit in the binary is a hyperlink to the page http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret/supersecretflash.html, and clicking the "Yes" button leads you to http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret665.html. The page has a timer that forces it back to the main page very quickly, but has text that seems like total gibberish on it. When we found it a while back that was the end of it, there wasn't anywhere to go.

My friend decided to take a look at it again for no real reason last night, found that the page had been updated, and put together that it lead to http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret/next.shtml. He immediately let me know and we burned through parts of it, and we are now currently at http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret/nextlevel.html.

This is a big treat for us because we've followed 665 for six years or so, so I thought I'd fill you guys in in case anybody else wanted to try to tackle it. It's not an ARG or anything, just a puzzle set up by a sincerely insane individual, and I have no idea how deep it runs. Good luck, feel free to post findings. Smile

Hmm looks an intersting set of puzzles.

I think the four wings provide clues to the answer in the Bestiary.

I've been guessing animals with little luck.

I, for one, would like to know *how* you made the steps you did, specifically from secret665.html to next.shtml and from there to nextlevel.html

Also, here is the text in that timed page, not that we really need it now, but:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Patience. It's a virtue. Things are still being built. Still being constructed. You might find some hints, though, if you poke around...or you might not. I haven't decided yet. Or I have. Or you haven't. And so on.

I probably don't need to tell you that this is the start of something incredibly complicated and time-consuming. So don't cock it up by solving it all right away.

If you're a slow reader, you're not even reading this part, so let me say: Nest Express Xerxes Tracking Dance Ossification Tanrism Scarification Haughty Truth Micturation Lauded

...there's something there now...

Well, I expressly refrained from posting the steps because I would rather have not ruined them for anybody else just starting out on it. However, since you've requested the information, I am of course certainly obliged to provide it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
First off, the jump to next.shtml (the bold in the text has been added to this excerpt from secret665.html):

"If you're a slow reader, you're not even reading this part, so let me say: Nest Express Xerxes Tracking Dance Ossification Tanrism Scarification Haughty Truth Micturation Lauded"

Or NEXTDOTSHTML.

next.shtml has two images linked on it, chunk2.bmp and chunk6.bmp (both of which you should save on your computer), as well as the following text:

"Well, aren't you clever! Yes, definitely. So here, I have put some hints for you - because there is something else coming soon that you will need to know the answer to. You like puzzles, yes? You must solve one to solve another. So here are two pieces for free - the rest may be harder to find.

From here, I'm sure you'll be wanting to go somewhere, right? All right. Let's play the name game - there are two numbers on this page (hint: they're not in this paragraph, nor the other one). From left to right, they make a number - what is it? Once you've figured that out, go to (that number).htm and see where that takes you..."

Since chunk2.bmp is on the far left of the page, and chunk6.bmp is on the far right, the number is 26, which leads to 26.htm. 26.htm forks into a few mini-puzzles, so here there are in the order that the page seems to infer them. There is a link marked "go here" in the top right area of the page, which leads to a page called vera.html.

(vera.html)
Vera's hand has been edited to look red, and the text on the image is as follows:

"something in this picture
should suggest a certain
author.

Just the last name will do.

/secret/author.html won't work.

but maybe the right name
will.

'Should intermitted
vengeance Arme again...'"

The full quote is "Or from above/Should intermitted vengeance arme again/His red right hand to plague us" from Book II of Paradise Lost by John Milton. Next destination is milton.html.

(milton.html)
Beneath the picture of John Milton are two very small black squares. Right click and save them to get chunk1.bmp and chunk3.bmp. Your work on this page is done, go back to 26.htm. On the left side of the page is a link that says "or here?" This link leads to fooey.htm.

(fooey.htm)
There is nothing on this page that is important save for the image that appears on the far right, plaintive.bmp. Save it and go back to 26.htm.

The bottom link, "here, maybe?" leads to beehive.html.

(beehive.html)
This page contains a flash that supplies 15 different links, nearly all of them leading to different search engines or sites. None of these are necessary. The circle in the bottom corner, marked "H," however, leads to footfall.html, which is where you want to go.

(footfall.html)
The page contains the last of the scattered image parts you're looking for, footfall.bmp. Save it and head back to 26.htm.

The last link, on the right reads "or here, if you're ready?" Clicking here leads to gateway.html, where you're prompted to enter your name. Assembling all of the scattered images you've found gives you this image. It reads "at the gate your name is a secret." So, at gateway.html, click the spot indicated and type out "a secret," including the space. You've made it to nextlevel.html

They have to; none of the animals pictured on that page work.

I GOT IT!

I found the animal! And what makes the victory all the sweeter is that I solved it by doing the very thing I failed to do back at secret665.html!!
(and that's the only clue you'll get from me!)

edit: Just to prove that i really did get it (not that I think you guys don't trust me or anything):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the first letter of each of the animals spells out "caterpillar"
http://www.sixsixfive.com/secret/caterpillar.html has only one un-crossed task, "get in touch with Allan from Chesterburg". A quick Google on those keywords brings us to
http://www.chesterburg.com/
and more specifically;
http://www.chesterburg.com/allan/
but I haven't figured out the password yet.

Hey, nice job on that animal one, it was entirely escaping me. I'll see what I can pull together on Allan.

Hidden in the new site is this message:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"A special Chesterburg welcome to the denizens of #finalfight. Hope you enjoy your stay!"
Looks like a chatroom name, but no clues as to any particular server or date/time to try it on.

Still no progress with Allan's password, either.

The Beastiary does direct you to Allan's Password, but what has been done about the clues in each of the wings? I think that if we solve them we'll get an IRC server for which to join #finalfight, and in there we'll get a clue pertaining to Allan's PW.

I wonder also, if the town of chesterburg and it's other inhabitants have anything to do with finding Allan's PW.

THis is starting to look ARGish, no?

Ok so, going back to NextLevel, and working on the wings, we've put together the North East and West wings, SEMICIRCLES5.GIF, 4.GIF and 3.GIF respectively, to give a coherent paragraph, also findable at /secret/semicircles2.gif.

We don't know how this correlates to SEMICIRCLES.GIF, the South image, which seems like an origami instruction or something.

Semicircles5.gif seems to indicate that we can move on through the puzzle another way, possibly the caterpillar route.

This being so, and now focusing on ChesterBurg, it might be prudent to mention that this,

<META
content="Chesterburg, Greaper, Allan Etienne, Peter Etienne, Jeffrey Power, JS Power, 665, SixSixFive, Plymouth Massachusetts, Sister Roger, Sister Prudence, Ashforthaven, message in a bottle, i will keep you warm if you keep me safe/sane, on the list, peter gene ace paul, maturity, immaturity, 665 game, phillip joss, ptjoss, joss"
name=KEYWORDS>

, is also found in the source code, along with the #finalfight mention.

#finalfight

I checked this out a bit, as far as I've found, #finalfight is an old chat room. I don't know if it even has anything to do with what we need to find. I just happen to know its a room that's been around for a while.

Hmm, I've been looking at this for awhile (and almost every page leads me to a 404! Even half the links here! Argh!). Rather interesting.

I notice how at chesterburg, there's a cemetery, and 'greaper's' general store. Greaper? G Reaper? Grim Reaper, perhaps? Cemetery, Grim Reaper, and Final Flight. Hmmm.... think a connection is possible?

EDIT: I note how the picture of the cemetery is called 'burialtown'. Something is involving the dead.

Peter, Gene, Ace and Paul are all the first names of the group KISS. Just thought I'd contribute that, in case it helped.

This looks fun! Keep up the good work!
