phillis and iris found the secret compartment....EMPTY

Dear Pam,
Thank you so much for explaining about AIM. I just don't know if I'm up
to learning anything new right now. I am feeling really tired today. Can't imagine why, can you? I had fitful nightmares during the night wherein I was being chased by shadows and cornered by mysterious beings. Douglas was up and gone before I arose so at least I haven't had to deal with him today.

Iris and her guys arrived around 9:30 this morning. Chris and James
went about checking their equipment readings, casting anxious glances at Iris. Their usual camaraderie and cheerfulness was being dampened by Iris' vagueness and silence. I went about my cleaning chores with the same quality of listless despondency.

Finally, as I was preparing lunch for all of us, Iris came into the kitchen and we spoke simultaneously, "Are you all right?" I said, "Yes." Iris said,
"No." I said, "No" and she said, "Yes." Then, we both said, "I don't know," and laughed. We talked a little about what happened yesterday. I told her, frankly, that I'm afraid we've gotten ourselves into something that is scarier and potentially more dangerous than I ever imagined. Iris admitted that she's afraid, too, after all, she's the one who was directly threatened. We were out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by hostile forces, at their mercy really, I told her, that upset me terribly. And having Douglas somehow involved in this war between secret groups further compounds my anxiety. I can't believe he would put me, his trophy, at risk like that. Iris tried to reassure me but had to admit she doesn't know which side is which either. Then, we both thought of Douglas' office and decided to investigate the floorboards after our meal. That cheered us both up considerably.

With Chris and James on guard duty, we entered Douglas' office and
checked his desk. The handwriting samples I had seen before were nowhere to be found.Opening the door to the small closet behind his desk, we found nothing out of the ordinary, a couple of jackets and a sweater on hangers, piles of books and papers on the shelf and a small stack of boxes on the floor. By looking closely, we could see dust trails that indicated the boxes had been slid out and aside.

We carefully moved them along the same track and out of the way. The
wooden floorboards looked completely ordinary and in keeping with the rest of the flooring. Because the closet is narrow, the boards were the same length, running from side to side up to the baseboards on the side walls.

Iris asked for a flashlight and I hurried off to fetch one. When I
returned she was still kneeling and examining the boards without touching them. I held the beam of the flashlight over her shoulder and we could see disturbances in the dust, finger prints and a hand print. Iris reached out and put her fingers and hands exactly in these marks and pressed down. Nothing happened and I let out a little groan of frustration. Iris then tried moving the floor in different directions by pressing down slightly and pushing in one direction then the other. By trial and error, she discovered that one board went one way and cleared the moulding on its other end while the other board went the opposite way and also cleared its mooring. "Ahhhh," we both said as we saw the boards could be titled and lifted out. Iris handed one over her shoulder and I put the flash light down to take it and lean it against the wall. Then, she handed out the second one. We both looked at each with expressions of expectation. She
leaned forward and I leaned over her to shine the flashlight's beam directly into the small hole that now gaped in the floor – nothing! Nothing!!! I actually said, "Damn!" Iris said something worse and we sagged with disappointment.

After carefully restoring the closet to the state in which we had found
it, we were both fairly disheartened. I muttered, more or less to myself, "I wonder what he's been hiding down there?" Iris brightened, "Well, we'll just keep checking, won't we? If we're careful, he'll never know and might use it again." I gave her a pat on the back and crowed, "I like the way you think, Iris!"

This afternoon I had another appointment with my divorce attorney and
reported my inability to discover Douglas' financial records. So, all in all,
it's been a sad sort of day. On the way home, I stopped at the grocery and overheard people gossiping about the rumor of the day – that TV reporter, Tracie something is coming to town to do some kind of feature story but no one is sure about what.

I arrived home just as Iris was preparing to leave and the phone rang.
"This is Wes," said himself, "Are you all right?" "That, my dear," I replied,
"Is the question of the day. I am shaken, not stirred, like a good martini. I do apologize for blaming you for our misadventure yesterday and ask, in turn, are you all right?" He replied without feeling, "I'm okay" and I offered, "Would you like to exchange the same meaningless words with Iris?" And, passed her the phone. Her conversation was as brief and uninformative as mine and she hung up the phone saying, "He said he couldn't talk more and had to go."

So, I am sitting here feeling just a bit depressed and wondering what
tomorrow will bring.

Fondly,
Phyllis

Pam,
Today Phyllis and I had a meeting of the minds and both decided that we
are scared. It should not come as any surprise to you that I have seen a
lot in my years of work in this field, but I really cannot believe that all of
this is happening. I keep shaking my head at how much has gone on and how, with each passing day, the list of what I do not know grows immensely.

Phyllis said she was going to tell you all about our exercise in
sneaking around. I wish I could report that we found something of use under those floor boards in his office, but of course we did not. Since this is not a Nancy Drew mystery novel, I suppose it was a lot to ask that we find the answers to everything on our very first snooping mission. I just hope that Phyllis can keep it together around her husband long enough for us to check the hole again until we learn what he has been hiding.

I have been thinking a lot about what has gone on and I am convinced
that Phyllis's problems extend beyond the limits of her marriage and her
house. The Grand Jury investigation notwithstanding, I believe that Mr.
Willingham may be involved in one of these groups. Some of you have suggested that maybe he is with the dead eye guys or even the numbered ones, though I still am not quite sure who these groups are or whether they are up to no good.

Oh what a day! I heard from someone who has witnessed the Ash Grove Park/Cemetery phenomena.

Iris
