Oh, thank you for keeping up with posting the progress.
Take a look at the background image. Take a look at it with a different color table. Zoom in on the extreme lower right corner.
EDIT: removed teeny version, replaced with zoomed version

This might be too late to be of any relevance, but I don't think anyone pointed out a small detail on the first page, alice.html. The background image (alice.gif) is about 1875px square or something, and in the veeery lower righthand corner is the following. Hope this helps a bit (maybe)!
The attachment has been magnified 2x for clarity.

Zoom of corner of alice.gif

I'm sure everyone noticed it; but since no one posted it yet, I figure I will. Here is the rot of text in the source:
ROT-1:
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice `without pictures or conversation?'
ROT-8:
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
ROT-6:
There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, `Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!' (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.
ROT-5:
In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

Wrong answer. It's not that easy.

Whew. I had spec'd at the beginning that it wasn't "rabbithole" because it seemed to strange that the ROTs were different.
To me, it made sense that the different in ROTs were meant to goose us toward something. Even if it was.......a HERRING!

But if you rotate the graphic 90 degrees to the right, the bottom line looks like it possibly reads rabbithole. The first character could be an r, then possibly an a, and the next two characters are the same, so they could be bb.
Perhaps there's an alphabet we need to find with these characters so we can read it.

The pixels break nicely into 3 columns of 7 bits, of course

They're a transcribing of the pixels in the bottom right of the alice.gif background (including the black-on-black pixels).

Take a look at the background image. Take a look at it with a different color table. Zoom in on the extreme lower right corner.
EDIT: removed teeny version, replaced with zoomed version

It's the pixel transcription I didn't get, thanks.
