Something about the way they were talking was weird. Did anyone pick up on that? I'm starting to wonder if this is some sort of virtual reality thing. Maybe they're all hooked up in a computer. And Sam controls everything: Lawnmower Man style.

They were writing in this fashion because Sam is right there with them. Tom and Jim, both know that if they step out of line, or act in a manner that does not please Sam there will be consequences. Luckily enough for you, Sam has decided to keep them around, if for nothing else, company and to better communicate with us. I fear this is my fault, as I showed minor discomfort in attempting to read through Sam's poor typing skills.

Er, in that zip is one file called untitled.txt which is not password protected.

This may be of help in decoding: http://www.hanksville.org/yucatan/mayamath.html

We are in the same boat my friend.

Hi guys, new to this ARG…

Right, looking at the mayan text here's my attempt to decode the untitled.txt file (sorry about the length):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Looking at the last bit of the text

shellshell
shell
shelldot
shelldotdot
shelldotdotdot
shelldotdotdotdot
shellbar
shelldotbar
shelldotdotbar
shelldotdotdotbar
shelldotdotdotdotbar

changing shell = 0 dot =1 bar =5

00
0
01
011
0111
01111
05
015
0115
01115
011115

Assuming the first "shell" of each line indicates "new line" when written in a big long string of text (like the main body of the message) you get

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9

So, based on the above, (you can see what the main body of the text looks like [in shell bar dot format] in my attachment) you get:

5,5,1,0,8,1,2,5,00,5,0,7,5,00,3,5,0,3,5,0,5,1,00,9,1,3,0,8,1,9,0,4,5,4,5,0,9,
5,3,5,SPACE,8,9,4,7,00,5,0,3,5,0,3,9,4,4,0,9,5,0,9,0,3,1,4,0,0,1,2,1,0,5,8,
00,5,6,5,0,3,5,2,2,0,9,0,8,1,2,5,00,5,0,7,00,5,1,0,0,9,3,0,1,4,4,00,5,3,0,1,
8,5,0,9,SPACE,1,8,SPACE,9,4,7,00,5,0,2,5,2,9,5,2,5,00,9,1,3,0,1,4,4,00,8,
9,9,0,3,1,1,5,9,0,3,5,0,9,3,1,8,5,4,0,3,5,0,3,1,4,00,5,6,5,4,0,3,9,4,4,5,3,9,
0,5,8,0,4,5,5,8,9

NOTE : about half way through the text is a "bare" I've taken this to be "bar" EDIT - Line breaks are mine for ease of use-EDIT

I have NO idea what this means, but I thought Id try to save someone else the leg work.

Had another chat with Tom today. Seems Sam is behaving himself a bit better now:

Quote:
gemsweetiepie: hello
hksl0521: Hello there. Need I remind you about Dr. Wasser's absence?
gemsweetiepie: noted.. but i know about things there
hksl0521: Excellent. Collectively, we realize we have spoken before.
gemsweetiepie: thats true. how is everyone?
hksl0521: Annie is resting after helping us decode some more files of Dr. Tannis'. Sam is observing my actions and providing guidence. Jim is downstairs. His fingers are still broken.
hksl0521: I must caution you that we cannot maintain this level of coherency for long.
gemsweetiepie: Thats fine. Is Sam ok today?
hksl0521: Sam is well. He is exploring methods of allowing us to leave.
gemsweetiepie: Well I hope all of you are safe. there was some files given to us but so far I dont think we have been able to open them
hksl0521: Dr. Tannis was a vain and cautious man.
gemsweetiepie: Has Wasser been in contact?
hksl0521: Pardon me, please, while I consult with the others.
hksl0521: Dr. Wasser has not contacted us since the day after he arrived in Mexico. Annie is trying to tell me more, but I am afraid she is quite incoherent at this time.
gemsweetiepie: I hope Annie is ok. I havent had the pleasure of talking to Sam as yet.
hksl0521: Perhaps you will get that chance. Sam is right now occupied, and has given me permission to speak clearly for all of us.
hksl0521: He adds that you are permitted three questions about our current situation.
gemsweetiepie: Ok, so what is Sam deciding with regards to letting you guys go? I mean are you eating and sleeping?
hksl0521: We have ample food and water. Providentially, Sam had stored a large number of snacks, basic foods, and drink in his locker here. Whenever we need something, he gets it for us. He feels we may be important to his goals.
gemsweetiepie: Well as long as he is taking care of you all. I wont bother you anymore as I realise you must all be busy and tired. Is there any messages you would like me to pass on to my group? Ask Sam if he would like to tell us anything.
hksl0521: Pardon me, then, while I consult with the others.
hksl0521: Sam stresses to everyone that they not underestimate his generosity. He is trapped, and powerful, but possessed of purpose. As long as we all work together toward his goals, then we all will get out of this what we are seeking.
gemsweetiepie: I am sure we will. Keep everyone safe for now, and I hope that Jim and Annie are recovering ok. I or one of the group will be in touch.
hksl0521: Have a good afternoon.
gemsweetiepie: you too.

KenderOnAim: so, what are you up to?
hksl0521: my hands are healing also i was helping tom speak with gemma
KenderOnAim: good to hear about your hands. Who is Gemma?
hksl0521: she is one of you all
hksl0521: now that gemma is gone would you like me to get tom to speak with you/
KenderOnAim: I don't know any Gemma. I have been studying the Mayan numeral system myself
KenderOnAim: it's amazing stuff. So many things you can do with numbers..
hksl0521: i agree my thesis is on aztec innovations on mayan arithmetic
KenderOnAim: unfortunatly the difference between shell and shellshell has been eluding me so far
hksl0521: i dont know what you are talking about
KenderOnAim: about a list I found in a document I am trying to transcribe: shellshell
shell
shelldot
shelldotdot
shelldotdotdot
shelldotdotdotdot
shellbar
shelldotbar
shelldotdotbar
shelldotdotdotbar
shelldotdotdotdotbar
hksl0521: hmm
hksl0521: i have never seen that before
KenderOnAim: it seems to be counting from 0 to 9
hksl0521: where did you get that/
KenderOnAim: but the difference between shell and shellshell eludes me
KenderOnAim: in a document relating to an archeological dig in mexico
hksl0521: ah
hksl0521: well i can only speculate
hksl0521: many labs have optical readers that transcribe some glyphs to text
hksl0521: this may have come from a scxitentist who was working on alternate methods of mayan arithmetic
hksl0521: i can see no diff between 0 and 00 though
hksl0521: maybe the zero contains information and the zerozero does not/ or vice versa/
KenderOnAim: i see. How is the rest doing over there?
hksl0521: my fingers hurt annie wasnt helpful and sam is watching over us all
hksl0521: tom is tom
hksl0521: sam just came downstairs
hksl0521: he says you get 1 question before we have to go
hksl0521: and try to get out again
KenderOnAim: any news on whaterevr it is that is stopping you from leaving?
hksl0521: no maybe after we try again
hksl0521: good luck with your own research
KenderOnAim: good luck all of you with your situation!
hksl0521 signed off at 18:47:12.

The characters in chat keep saying that "Dr. Tannis is a vain and cautious man."

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The password for the files is "Tannis"

Edited to add: You guys can figure them out, I have to do my taxes. Sad

I have a message from Tom {paraphrased}:

Basically, he says use the city name, not many places near there Tannis could have gone. No one is in danger {more or less} anymore, and he feels they are being neglected.

I just now finally caught up on this thread. I put "Albrecht Wasser" in the thread title as a sort of temp name. If there's something else you'd rather call it, let me know. I figured just having "yet another weird AIM conversation" as the title won't draw many new players Wink
