Email Phyllis Tuesday Thought and Sarahs Statue

Dear Sunny One,

In my puzzlement over my visitors last night, I forgot to tell you part of my thoughts yesterday. I have decided to try and question Douglas. Don't worry, I won't put myself at risk but, all things considered, I should be asking him to share some aspect of what is going on in his life. We are still man and wife and even in my role as a decorative object I think I can safely open a conversation by asking, "Why have you been avoiding me lately?" Or, "What happened in Burlington? Did you testify yet?" Lorraine Tweed told me both the Mayor and Douglas were on stand-by to be called before the Grand Jury yesterday. It would be abnormal for me not to ask such questions. I suggested this to Iris and she agreed but, the problem is actually finding the opportunity to speak with him. Again, this morning, he was gone before I awoke or, perhaps, he never came home at all. I really must speak to him eventually.

When it got toward eleven last night, I called down to the Municipal Building and got no answer from his office. I then began punching in various extensions until I got Sam Greene. He said, no, he hadn't seen Douglas but, he also said he rarely left his own area of the building. Then, he asked if I'd seen the July update he has done to my web pages and did I have the new newsletter material ready yet. Well, of course not! I frankly confessed to him that I hadn't even thought about it. Promoting a business that I am trying to liquidate has been the last thing on my mind!

I can't say I had a restful night. There were no specific dreams, just vaguely disturbing and unsettling snippets of being pursued or trapped. Iris wandered about the house this morning looking quite forlorn. She is frustrated by her inability to re-connect with the entities that she felt when she first arrived. I went through Douglas' office again but found nothing new. I was thinking about checking out the closet space again when I heard Iris calling me from downstairs.

Iris asked if I had anything that had belonged to Sarah. She feels that Sarah is the key to divining our mysteries. I explained that the only painting I still have from the trunk is the one I think looks like Casper the Friendly Ghost and it is still on loan to the Library. Everything else was swept out when we renovated or stolen away. Then, I remembered the statue that Wes loaned to the Library and felt he had already retrieved it. Iris got quite excited, thinking it would be perfect. So we decided to go down to the EOTW and then grab some lunch at the Aglaura Diner afterward.

I checked my email before we left and got one from Colin Penrose. He expressed again his sympathy for my loss, asked if the insurance claim is coming along satisfactorily and then, ever so casually, asked how the police investigation was going regarding the burglary. It seems he is planning a trip "Stateside" and wants to see if he is going to be greeted with cuffs. Ha!

I also got two lovely Hallmark e-cards from Pam and Barbara. I think it's just wondrous how they do those lovely animations. I would have answered some of my emails but Iris was anxious to get her hands on that statue.

Wes was actually at his shop when we arrived and showed surprise and then pleasure at seeing us walk through the door. Iris was fairly amazed at his artifacts on display. He approached us both, away from Patti's hearing, and asked us if we had reported our encounter in the Pine Barrens to anyone. When we both gave him incredulous looks, he added, "Like the police." That gave us both a laugh. Aside from our "helpers" and Iris writing it up for her web site, neither of us has said a word. Wes heaved a sigh of relief but Iris put her finger in his face and said, "You know, Wes, you owe us an explanation. I know now isn't the right time but sometime – very soon – we're going to sit you down and you will answer some questions. You put us all in danger by going out there, intentional or not, and now we are both fully involved."

I really expected him to react badly to the demanding tone in her voice. But, he just laughed it off and said, "You're right, darlin'. It's about time
everyone started to get some real answers around her."

I explained the reason for our visit and asked if we could borrow the statue. He resisted the idea but when Iris insisted, he agreed. He disappeared into the back, then returned and started to hand it off to Iris. But, she threw up her hand and said, "No, let Phyllis carry it for now." "Be careful with it," he said, placing it into my hands and I replied curtly, "I do believe I know how to handle fragile antiquities, my dear. Might you have a tea towel or a length of bubble-wrap to keep it safe?" Better than that, he went to knock together a small shipping box while I admired the detail of the little fellow. You can peer up under the lip of the clay hood and see the most serene face hiding there. It almost seemed familiar to me. Wes said he would come my house later to reclaim it.

At the Diner, Iris, the celebrity, was beset by locals telling her about noises in their attics, things under their beds, and how their dog is possessed by Satan. I couldn't help laughing behind my hand and Iris whispered, "I get this loony psychic phenomena stuff all the time." One young man was so bold as to ask me, "What's ol' J.D. saying up in Burlington? Is he gonna get taken down with that Marzano mob?" "Really," I huffed, "I cannot say." We left on that note and returned to the house.

The rest of our day was spent wandering through-out the house with the statue. Iris feared that she might drop it if she went into her trance-state so I hovered about with my hands ready to seize it if need be. She was getting nothing but weak sensations until we entered the studio. When I saw her eyes dilating, I led her to a chair and guided her arms so the statue sat safely in her lap. When she returned to herself she described her vision to me – as she will to you – but it seems important to determine who the man depicted in the statue is or was. I tried calling Wes to ask if he knew but it was after closing time and I got no response at his shop.

We decided to take a break for dinner but Iris intends to try again with the statue this evening. Now I must go prepare our meal.

I write again tonight or in the morning.

Love,
Phyllis
