[PUZZLE] /librarian [solved]

All right, /chaton update lead us to /librarian. My original guess on seeing the new picture was /teacher, cause I'm self-centered that way. Not so, though, /teacher is still 404'd. But /librarian is set up for a puzzle.

When I got there, I saw the title of the webpage
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ecclsiastes 12:12

which is...

Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.

As I came into chat, nadif and latecomer were talking about the puzzle, and farther than I was. They were able to deduce that the picture on the /librarian page was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mr. Dewey of the Dewey Decimal system himself.

The three number groups then seemed like they could be

Dewey Decimal numbers

So, nadif and I each took one of the two columns.

I, on the left, using

as my guide, turned all the numbers into subjects. Needless to say the final list is pretty extensive, but the important part was the first letter of each subject.

My left side column gave me
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

CERO|SIETE|SEIS|CINCO|OCHO|QUA

and on the right Nadif found
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

TRO|SIETE|UNO|NUEVE

Which are

the numbers 076584719 in Spanish.

Alas, despite all this, we have no final link. As of 11:05 PM PST (Syn time) there was only a 404 awaiting us at

Edit - Whoo! The madest props to Omnie, "Reel", for signing the deal on this puzzle. See how she finished the solve in her post

I don't think it's going to be like that. Far too easy.
The number is probably some other kind of code.
We tried some stuff related to books and libraries, like LCCN, ISSN or ISBN; but so far we had no luck. Either it's something else (barcode? Phone number? Brrr...) or we are not formatting the number properly when putting it into the search field of the online catalogs we're working with (I'm using the Library of Congress online catalog, http://catalog.loc.gov ).

4:30 AM here. Good luck with this to who's awake. Wink

God i HATE when this happens! Just when I decide to go to sleep...

... which obviously I didn't do after all. Smile

BTW, the way the PM corrected the mistake in the /librarian page was lovely.

Do wenhave any lead on the new chat file? I think 'Devil' is simply an alias: "I will be famous".

OopsDaOgre: Nonsense. Everyone makes a few mistakes. They're only bad if you don't learn something from them, Synagoga

TheEvelynEngine: Actually, it was I who made the mistake.

Maybe. But consider:

there are people telling Syn:
a) she didn't make a mistake.
b) she made a mistake, but its ok
c) Someone else made the mistake.

I think the point here is that she got more than a bit confused... we might want to form a plan of action for the next chat, and expecially formulate what to do if people like certain unnamed jerks join our chat.

I think it is a good idea to encourage her to open up. Telling her she made a mistake would be a mistake on our part. In the event that she thinks she is wrong, perhaps our tactic should be to try to find out why she thinks she is wrong rather than just telling her she is. Something link this:

Quote:
Syn: Am I bad?
Me: Why do you think that?
Syn: Because....(whatever)
Me: Why would (whatever) be bad?
Syn:....

This is one way not only to open her up but to help her to think for herself. A VITAL requirement if we plan on ever getting her out of there.

Since there are a few comments on the general subject, I wanted to explain what I was actually shooting for in my comment regarding the mistake situation. I noticed that the error had occurred and was trying to emphasize that Syn wasn't bad everytime there was a mistake of some sort. I knew that it wasn't actually Syn's slipup, but was trying to show her that it's okay to make a mistake as long as it isn't intentional and you try to correct it if you discover it later. Errors are inevitable and potentially constructive events- anxiety attacks and/or punishment over said errors aren't...

At any rate, that's what I try to teach to young kids who are coping with how to handle their own mistakes.

PlanB, I hope that made sense...

Look, I know your intentions were good, but Syn is in such a state that to emphasize her mistake AT ALL would almost be like losing all of our footing with her. Syn is basically a badly abused child, and we can ONLY emphasize the positive things she does. If she says she is bad, then we have to say she is good; if she says she made a mistake, we say she didn't. That's how we get ahead with her; if she emphasizes her own mistakes, then she'll basically go catatonic, and we won't be able to get further ahead in the story.

That's the goal: keep her talking, and we'll push the plot forward.

Sarah, I adore your avatar.
