Anyone else going to Gen-Con?

Hey Folks,
we decided a bit late, but we're headed to Indianapolis for Gen-Con.

For those that aren't familiar, it's a gaming convention for Wargames, Role-Playing games, computer games, etc., as well as Sci-fi and Fantasy Fandom. It has for years been held in my stomping grounds of Milwaukee, but the city lost its contract, and the con will be in Indy for at least the next five years. For more info, check out http://www.gencon.com

We're packing up the car and driving out Thursday night (July 24th), getting in (hopefully) around midnight, then doing the con Friday and Saturday, heading home Sunday. Anyone else spending time there? Any locals have suggestions on where to eat, etc.?
Thanks!

-m

just my luck. I drove up to WI from IN for the Gen Con a couple of years ago and had a blast, but hadn't returned because of the long drive. Now that I live in WI its down in IN.

Whoa, people are actually VOLUNTARILY coming to Indy? Wtf?

There are a million things to do in the downtown "circle center" area, from bars to malls to pool joints to just walking around outside and enjoying the gardens and canals and zoo and stuff. Check out http://www.indy.com for more details if your tastes run to the mainstream, or http://www.nuvo.net for options that are a little left of center.

A perennial favorite tourist attraction for out of towners always seems to be the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; even when there's not a race going on, you can still do a tour of the facility (did you know that there is 2/3rds of a fully-functional 18 hole golf course in the fairway INSIDE the racetrack?) and take a bus trip circuit around the track.

The White River Canal Walk is also always very pretty and scenic this time of year. If you are spending any time on the north side, where I live, check out Conner Prairie, which is sort of a functioning historical colonial village/outdoor museum. They also have free "Symphony On The Prairie" classical music shows every Friday and Saturday night.

For the young hip bar-hopping set, the trendier folks always seem to ooze on over into the general direction of Broad Ripple (approximately 40th Street and College Ave.), which is a little mini-neighborhood with more than it's fair share of martini bars, coffee shops, live music venues, brewpubs and dance/rave halls.

Or you could always drive to the outskirts of the city and count the cornstalks. Mmmmm, corn.

O

Wow, I had no idea. I'll have to look and see where in town it's gonna be held and check out the offerings. Maybe I'll go.

Hmm...walking distance from home.

Can somebody cut and paste the agenda here? For some reason I can't get past the main page.

oh man, now I really wanna go. All the Star Wars celebs (if you can call them celebs) are gonna be there. I was wondering why they weren't gonna be at the wizard show this year!

It's something weird with my computer here at work, the direct link in won't load either.

Just a list of the events they have planned is all I'm looking for.

Well, there's supposedly a downloadable pdf that lists the events, but it doesn't work. So here's what I could find throughout the site...

Art Show

The Gen Con Indy Art Show is the industry's premier showcase for fantasy and sci-fi art. More than eighty artists will be displaying and selling their work, either at tables or on the walls of the Art Show Gallery. The Art Show is conveniently located in rooms 120-124, directly across from the entrance to the exhibit hall.

Auction

This used and collectible game auction is organized by Kenneth Fonarow from "The Weekend Warrior Game Company: in Los Angeles. The is the traditional annual event where knowledgeable and novice buyers and sellers bring their games, and their money, in hope of finding that rare treasure that may have spent the last many years hidden away in the back of the den closet or that box in the garage labeled "games!" Our auctions are the only ones in the country with "Advance Partial Payouts" available to consignors while the auction is still running!

C2V Star Wars Celebrity Guests

Celebrity Deathmatch D20 - The Play

What happens when a group of gamers collect popular characters from D20 RPG settings and force them into a fight to the finish? Come see this year's annual Gen Con play to find out! Join us for an evening of fun and laughter as we present 'Celebrity Deathmatch D20'. Watch heroes and villains from the Forgotten Realms, DragonLance, Star Wars, Deadlands, Wheel of Time, and more attempt to prove the superiority of their own campaign setting. You don't want to miss this comedy of D20 proportions!

Costume Ball

Klingons, Sailor Moon Girls, Jedi Knights, Princess Leis, Midevil Knights, Adventurers, all are welcome! Come dressed as your favorite character, super hero, or maybe the rock star you always wished you could be. Strut your stuff, get your groove on and most of all have fun!

Costume Contest

Fan Films Track

Gen Con 64 PC LAN

Industry Guests of Honor

Media Guests of Honor

Miniatures Paint and Take

Party In the Plaza

Those in the know, know that Magic: The Gathering 10th Anniversary Party in the Plaza is the place to be to kick-off Gen Con Indy in high style. Rock your socks off (and maybe other bits) with a special guest band. We can't tell you who just yet, but we promise it's something you'll be buzzing about all weekend.

Thursday, July 24th
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Pan Am Plaza
(Across the street from the convention center, between the Omni Severin Hotel and the RCA Dome.)

Snacks and non alcoholic beverages will be served free (while supplies last). No host bars will be set up. You must have a Gen Con Indy badge to get into the party. See you there!

True Dungeon

New to Gen Con Indy this year, True DungeonTM is a d20 variant that allows players to experience their D&D adventure within a life-size, dungeon environment. Not a LARP, True Dungeon focuses on problem solving, teamwork and tactics while providing exciting sets and interactive props
