Xbox 360

Post all your info (or rumors) about the next Generation of Xbox (Xbox 360*/Xbox Next/Nextbox).

I found this today on the web site Kotaku.

Kotaku wrote:

Not everyone has to wait around to hear details of Microsoft's sexy new Xbox 360—and now, thanks to Kotaku, neither do you. An exclusive Kotaku source has revealed a bevy of facts about the next-generation console set to rock the Xbox world.

The original Xbox was a manly chunk of square black-and-green plastic meant to win over a generation of hardcore male gamers. The Xbox 360° will be about winning over gamers of all persuasions, with a customizable look and a kindler, gentler Circle of Light marketing campaign.

Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device will also be able to stand upright or on it's side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off. The 360°s dashboard will also be customizable, making each console a thing totally unique to its owner.

Some of the inner workings of the 360° have also been confirmed. The device will feature high definition audio and video and wireless controllers, and will come in two flavors—one with a hard drive and one without. The biggest shock is that while Microsoft wants to make their 360° backwards compatible, they haven't yet been able to pull it off.

"They're working on it," said our source.

This is all just rumor of course but this article does recount may previous rumors. Customizable case and dash board are new additions, which I find interesting.

That all sounds fantastic, and I hope that even half of it is true. But I'm a little wary of trusting that article. All they'll say about where they got the info is that it's "An exclusive Kotaku source" and "Our inside source." Hmm. Well, I've got my fingers crossed.

And I just saw the best line yet from Ubercado's sig. After pointing out what a crummy computer I'm using, it says "What are you thinking?" Laughing

It seems I'll get this new console then. It has two things I was hoping to get on the next gen: High def video and a hard drive (even if it's opt). I'm still waiting for an anwer on 5.1 DD sound though. Now let's see what Sony/Nintendo will bring to the table! But then again, Halo2.5/3 will be on MS console ...

Oh, I never thought the big-black-box design was bad! Just not easily to carry around, but not bad IMO.

Why would I need 6? I currently have 6 xboxes at the house now...

I have a bunch of guys I used to play halo 1 with and we needed 1 for each player for the LAN

Waters, man, the current XBox has high def video and 5.1 DD surround sound. I use the 5.1 surround at home already; I got a $20 replacement video/sound output cable and I piped the optical sound output to my home theater. The HD video output is yet another cable, but it's also available now (I just don't have anything to view HD on). Of course, the current generation also has a hard drive.

I've said before that if the new XBox isn't backwardly compatible with the current set of games, it's just a non-starter to me. Actually, the only thing that would persuade me to shell out good money (and lots of it) for a new console and a new set of games is you guys. If the Beekeepers leave me listening to crickets in the lobby of Halo 2 on XBox 1, I'll get lonely and buy the new XBox and Halo 3, just to keep playing with all of you. If I can keep my current XBox and keep playing with all of you, I'll put off a new version XBox purchase indefinitely.

The current Xbox doesn't support digital HDTV... it uses analog (component) cables for the HD AV pack. Hopefully the next Xbox will have HDMI or DVI output available for a truly lossless digital signal. It's gotta be a bit easier on the graphics card to just dump the whole signal over to the TV rather than convert from digital to analog on-board.

(I'm rooting for HDMI myself, as that's what my TV has on its back and converter cables are appallingly expensive right now.)

-- Steve's in awe of the Dolby Digital signal output, though. It makes the game experience so immersive... it's a pity the Xbox such a mediocre CD player.

I know all that. I'm a home theater freak myself! I have the component output and the optical out and everything. Two things:

- High def video (1080i and 720p) are available in a limited number of games right now. 720p is a little more common, but my Mits tv does not accept that ... 1080i is available in less than 10 games ... And most of them suck anyway! I really really hope the next gen consoles have 1080i as a standard, like the xbox has 480p as standard.

- 5.1DD. The Xbox chip has Dolby Digital Real-time Encoder, which is part of the nvidia chipset. It's available for computers with motherboards that use the Nforce1/2 chipset, which I owned in the past. The new Nforce3/4 chipsets for AMD64 does not have the Dolby Digital encoder. And right now, there's no Hardware based DD encoder! I really don't want to see a software based encoder like the Intel Azalia. Specially in a video game console, since you can't just compensate that with a faster CPU or overclock your current CPU. This is one of the rare cases where things might go backwards! I'm still waiting to see if Sony/MS/Nintendo will get a DD hardware encoder in place. And no, Dolby Digital Pro-logic II (like the gamecube has now) is not enough, after you played real DD on games.

That's not correct. HDTV is independent of the connection you use. HDTV standard only states a series of resolution with 1080i and 720p (480p is NOT HDTV) being the most common ones. Component can output 1080i and 720p without a problem! I have this on my cable box and a PCI HDTV tuner card. Yes, it's true DVI/HDMI or even Firewire is all digital, which arguably could give you a better picture. I find this is true for digital displays, like DLP and LCD-based TV's, since those have 1:1 pixel display. For CRT, the difference is not as big. I still use RGBHV, which is like VGA on my TV, even though I have a DVI connector on my TV. DVI cables are too expensive and I'm a cheap bastard! Cool

Hope this helps.

You know, I suddenly realized that I know exactly where I am going if I want to tap a bunch of consultants about any fun electronics/tech toys questions I have.

I mean, I always knew this, but more and more you guys amaze me with your easy knowledge of this stuff.

Optical out? I haven't been able to find an optical out on my xbox anywhere... what's up with that?
