New ARG from BBC: Jamie Kane

Hello everyone, new to the forum and all that. Anyway, I searched about and saw that you've managed not to notice a new ARG that I myself am working on at the BBC.

Anyway, it's called "Jamie Kane", which is the name of a fictional popstar
who goes missing. Here's a press release that came out a while ago:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/11_november/10/kane.shtml

I warn you, it's a lot less complicated than most ARGs about, largely as it is aimed at a far more mainstream audience (mainly teenage girls), but should be a lot of fun anyway. Most importantly for you lot is that with any luck it should increase publicity of ARGs a lot, as we should be getting a lt of press and TV coverage of this. I also think you'll be quite impressed with the lengths we've gone to in creating the whole universe.

I probably can't say much more than this, but with any luck we should be launching in a couple of months or so, so you won't have long to wait.

Tyhanks for the heads up. It was getting a tad BORING for the typical launch being a cryptic AIm conversation. At least you lay it out, and dont forget to get it on here when you launch. Dont forget to read up all the archives, check out how all the other ARGs did. Tis always good learning.

The trick is for the players to have FUN.

Cheers

Oh, sorry Comrade, you guys must not have been paying attention...
IMing hkdl is the only way to start an ARG now.

Sorry, I just don't think this could be any good without a mysterious AIM conversation freaking hkdl out. Two of the last three have been good so far, so he must do something for the quality of the games.

Maybe hkdl's some sorta... Lucky ARG charm... ... Yeah, I'll shut up now.

What? Everyone's doing it now.

Remember, it's just not ARG without the HKDL!

... Wait, that'd make it, like, HKARDGL or something...
Darn, and I thought that was catchy!

Since they're saying Jamie Kane is fictional, I wonder if this is the trailhead

I guess if anything it's just a little pregame thing, but, two things...

1. The link to www.jamiekane.com (Jamie Kane's official website) is down.
and
2.

Hello there... I'm new to all of this ARG business, but upon hearing and reading about it, it's reallly piqued my interest. I really wanted to start with Still Life especially since I was interested in the actual game itself. But since it seems to be at a bit of a stand-still, I thought I'd go with this BBC one to pass my time...

Besides, since I'm expecting it to be aimed at teenaged girls, it may be just the thing to ease me into the ARG experience.... Smile

In any case.... I have found some links where you can read about Jamie and the sad break-up of Boy*d Upp....

He even has a lookalike! Complete with cheesy photo, crap website and contact number in case you want to book him for your sister's wedding or something....

That's all for now... I'm off to sleep... but not without smiling at the band name Boy*d Upp Laughing

Ah, that's quite a large number of sites you've discovered there, Jen... how did you find them?

Currently, I am only able to provide one extra link:
http://www.gvbhelicopters.com/

However, it's probably worth noting that there are login pages for http://www.mobiletechnetworks.co.uk and http://www.asiaretreat.com

Asia Retreat also assumes that you're Jamie Kane trying to log-in, and asks for his passport number if you've "forgotten" his password.

It's pretty easy to tell if a site is related due to them telling you if you try to "contact them" Razz

The first lot I got from a web search, the second lot I found by right-clicking on the aforementioned website and clicking on "View Source".

http://www.jamiekane.co.uk has been updated.[/quote]

This game is still in development

I just had a nice convo with one of the project leads for this at BBC. Here's just a lttle info on this game.

First and foremost, the game is still in development, it's not ready, it's not live, it hasn't started yet. Smile So, best to just step back and let them get everything ready to go. Otherwise, we'll all just be frustrating ourselves.

From the info I was told, this should be interesting to watch, as it's going to be using all the classic ARG elements, but with a couple differences. First, it's going to be aimed at a different demographic than usually, namely teeneage girls. Secondly, and a little more interestingly from a meta standpoint, is that they will be working around the live-game limitation, and it will really be playable on an individual basis. In other words, the game will be live for quite some time, but everyone who plays will have the same experience, no matter when they start. Email updates, interactive elements, etc. will all happen in relation to when the player initially registers, as opposed to realtime. This way, everyone can enjoy it regardless of when they start or at what pace they play.

In addition, they will be needing beta testers once everything gets to that point. If you'd like to be considered, pm me.

[Crosspost from ARGN]

The BBC has announced today that it is accepting beta testers for its upcoming alternate reality game Jamie Kane. The game is aimed at a teenage audience and revolves around the search for a missing popstar.

Those who are familiar with alternate reality games may be a little surprised by the lack of stealth here, but Jamie Kane is treading into new territory in numerous ways. This game, while employing classic ARG elements, will be aimed at a primarily teenage market, so the plot and puzzles will be targeted accordingly. In addition, it won't be played in real-time, so that players may begin at any time and all have the same experience. Nevertheless, Jamie Kane will employ numerous websites, emails, mobile phone alerts, videos and instant messaging to help players discover what happened to their favorite pop-star, Jamie Kane.

According to Rob Cooper, the head of the BBC's interactive drama and entertainment department, "You play for around 20 minutes a day and it makes use of AI chats to feed you info. Typically, it will take around 15 days to solve, a clue at a time." Unfortunately for those of us outside of Britain, the phone elements of the game will presently only work in the UK.

Kudos go out to the BBC for yet another foray into ARG-type content as it relates to television. Previously, they have commissioned extensive online companion work for Dr Who and Tony Garnett dotcom. It will be interesting to see how this game pulls together, especially the "automatic" elements that are based on the players' progress rather than playing out in real time.

To apply to be a beta tester for Jamie Kane, go to www.bbc.co.uk/jamiekane/. Remember, if you're outside of the UK, the phone elements of the game won't work for you.....yet.

Beta-testers are being asked to use a private forum we've set up at ARGN for any discussion of this beta test (you must register to view).

I started playing the game today, or I guess it would be considered beta testing. Mind my vulgarity, but it's FUCKING AWESOME. They made like 20 professional sounding songs for this game, and there's a ton of sites dedicated to it. I searched for the bands name, Boy*D Upp, on Google and found two fake fansites that have recently shut down with a paragraph about why. The source code reveals that it's all fictional, too. Plus, it all seems pretty straightforward so far, which is good news for me.
