I sent VsFaery an e-mail yesterday concerning the 1:1 and 2:4 reference and got an e-mail back today...

Hail and well met, scholar and sage!

To accept the truth, the path must be made clear. To clear the path,
we must first learn the way. To learn the way, we must discover what
was, what is, and what will be. Let that knowledge be your guide,
and you will find the way.

If we use all the letters together we have 180 letters to decipher, but each card contains 36 letters which fit nicely into a 6x6 grid. Either way I'm terrible with this stuff and have no clue how to solve it. I guess I'll never find the path.

Wow. 18, 180, 36.

Phaedra wrote:
Hmm. This is probably random, but in Hebrew, 18 is a very significant number -- it's chai: life.

What I didn't put there is that traditionally, donations to Jewish organizations are given in multiples of 18 for precisely that reason -- 18=life. 36 is twice "life" and so is also very significant. There's a traditional belief that there are 36 righteous people in the world at all times, and without them, the world would be destroyed. They are anonymous and humble (in some versions, even they don't know who they are) but are called out of their anonymity at times of crisis to sustain the life of the world.

Maybe we're going to have Fun With Kabbalah.

And maybe our PM just likes multiples of 3.

<shrug>

Dunno.

I think it might be some kind of "letter grid" code. Each pair of characters represents one letter. Consider them the x and y on the grid. So, wv would have you go accross the w row until you come to the v column and that is the correct replacement. Question is, what is the proper size and arrangement of the grid.

Good thought.

Playing with grids, la la la.

EDIT: I wonder if we're supposed to be paying attention to the greetings on the emails?

"scholar and sage"

"devoted one"

"seeker of the truth"

EDIT AGAIN: Thanks, Dorkmaster. Very Happy

And maybe I'm just overcomplicating things. Sad

For those who are not in chat, here's a partial solve. It's not complete but I thought I'd post it because I might not have time to finish it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Order the columns as follows:

wv fd tl jp ww
aa ae ir eo oa
and so on....

Read vertically, going down-right

These are some of the words I got:

journey legend truth distort feels vagabond wanderer endured truths obscured return mystical the signs

Here's my work so far so you don't have to repeat it. Check the "test" tab in the worksheet.

The yellow columns are from the blurry red card, so you can change the letters if required.

I think we're supposed to rotate the columns -- sixth column, diagonally down spells "legen". Now go back to the first: sixth letter down "ds." Legends. Actually, if you do that, "legends entered."

Well, let's find all the words in this configuration first.

"watch for the signs"

"vagabond returns"

"feels veridical"

"distorted mystical"

"truths obscured"

"legends entered"

"journeys abound"

"polyonymous"

"wayward wanderer"

"wayworn wayfarer"

Hmm. "Wayward wanderer" might be from Edgar Allen Poe's "Helen."

The weary wayward wanderer bore or somesuch.[/i]

"Polyonymous," I believe, is the opposite of "anonymous" -- having many names rather than none.

"Feels veridical" would be "feels true."

Working on that now. Very Happy

Hey everyone...check your inboxes...

The bottom row is out. They're "phantoms."

Just looked up Poe's Helen, too. The reference I made above is actually incorrect -- the text of the poem is "weary wayworn wanderer." So maybe it's not a reference to the poem.

Okay, extra letters:

watchforthesignsn
vagabondreturnset
feelsveridicalvag
distortedmystical
truthsobscuredab
legendsenteredn
journeysabound
polyonomousre
waywardwandererou
waywornwayfarerrn

and then, left over:

nown
soj
ds
o

n et vag ab n re ou rn nown soj ds o

sojourn
renown
vagabonds
net?
