LA Times Scan

Here's a scan of pretty crappy quality. I'm at my wife's parents, and their scanner is not the best, nor is their computer. I'll get a better scan when I get home...

Oh, and I used to live in Reseda, which is a suburb of LA.

That would be me. I really am trying to get it done, but I can't really justify kicking my brother off the computer during mid-term week for a gmae I'm playing. As soon as the machine is free for a few minutes I'll do it.

By the way, what resolution should I use?

hey, good question. Let's open that topic some. We have been (more or less) promised a game with lots of printed material; lots of stuff to scan. So let's establish some sense of guidelines fFor scanning.

Plain text (such as newspaper ads) should be scanned at about 100 - 150 dpi. In this case, centipede, we have the text, and the scan is fFor completion's sake. so 100 dpi is quite acceptable.

High resolution images (such as postcards) should be scanned at about 300 to 400 dpi.

These should not be taken as canonical. If the spirit moves you to scan at a higher res, go fFor it. In general, if you cant make out the smallest (important) detail, it's not high enough resolution, and is useless to anyone. webcams are not scanners, do not use them as such.

Also, when it seems appropritae, please give physical dimensions of the thing being scanned. 3" X 5". 75cm x 20cm. something like that.

I was thinking even higher resolutions. What we are scanning with these newspapers is a rahter small add. By scanning at higher resolution, we can view them larger on our screens. Since images on a screen are only really displayed at 72dpi, scanning at 144 would enable us to view it double size. I wold also recomend a higher resolution because scanned text can lose some definition.

nope, gotta correct you Razz

this is a very very common misconception... 'dpi' is really only useful when working with print, physical copies. This '72dpi' figure that really doesn't exist, is an average, for lack of a better term, approximate monitor resolution... here's the thing - monitors can be any size these days, and the resolutions on a monitor can be any size. Scanning at 72dpi won't guarantee the scan you see on your screen with be the same physical size on every monitor - 72dpi could be 1 inch for someone, or 1cm for someone else...

72dpi is a recommended scanning resolution in order to give decent enough detail in the final image to be readable... has nothing to do with final viewing size. typically, you should be able to scan most text sources at 72dpi and be able to read the image. Doubling to 144dpi just doubles the detail in the image and won't make the text any more readable, if it's already readable.

I generally scan everything at least 100dpi, at the very least, and resize afterwards to whatever is necessary or required.

In looking back at recent scans of ads, I can't help but notice section numbers. Since I don't have these papers in front of me, my question is, are all of the ads being posted in the same classified sections? Today's was in "Personal Messages" Where were the others? Whomever placed the ads must have known where they would appear, and could have purposely selected sections for each ad. They also would know that section's number, and therefore the number of the section might be relevant to the ad.

jomolungma's post got me thinking. This one wasn't in the lost-n-fFound section. Which suggests it's not reporting something lost. I mean, it has the "Lost. The Cube." heading. But the actual content is something else entirely.

in fFact, it reads more like an encyclopedia entry. A bit like this over here about H. Zeller. the mood and spirit isn't like a report about a stolen object at all. I mean i suppose it could be. But the mood seems to suggest this is a piece of an entirely different article fFrom somewhere else.

well, maybe.

... or we still lack 4 pieces. imho these are really ONE big thingie together, though, i see your point why it'd be a part of a different thing. the style really differs, so does the section. i say it _might_ be something, but we should wait for all ads.

Are 4 pieces really enough to complete anything of substance? Think about it - 4 pieces will give us maybe 8-12 more lines. A typical press release, if that's what this is, is at least two to three paragraphs. I don't think we'll have enough at the end of the papers to make a complete document.

If it isn't a press release it's a very odd sounding snippet from something else, but I believe still a snippet. I can't see how we'll get the whole thing by the end of these paper ads - perhaps they'll lead to a location where the rest of the document exists, or the document will need to be supplemented through, say, email responses from the email addresses at the bottom (I'm going out on a limb and saying they'll be more addresses in coming ads).

Next ad/blank on video

The video still has not been updated with the next ad, so we are now waiting for the blank. Last 8 Mar LA Times, Blank, next 14 Mar South China Morning Post.

[SPEC] Are we supposed to be searching for the next ad? (We have been spoon fed the last few.)

Do we need to check each of the KNOWN newspapers each day between the last and the next?

Should we be trying to find an ad in a different newspaper?

Which are the next biggest national newspapers or the biggest nationals in other countries that have been implicated in the game (eg. Tokyo/Japan)?

Is this something that we could break up between a few of us, rather than ad hoc checking?

Dunno

What I think might happen is that all of the newspaper adverts will have snippets from the speculated press release in the their dimension, except for the Guardian which may have a copy of the press release with parts of the paragraphs blanked out with a black pen, and the earlier snippets will fit into these...
