2. It is a form of the verb *recedere*, which comes from Latin and is current in Italian. It is a legal term meaning withdraw . (to remove, to take back, to recall).
If someone is good at grammer:

Present inperfect singular

From advert thread.
It is an italian legal term, and is only found in the form Receda in specific tenses in the singular.

re·cede
To move back or away from a limit, point, or mark: waited for the floodwaters to recede.
To slope backward.
To become or seem to become fainter or more distant: Eventually, my unhappy memories of the place receded.
To withdraw or retreat.
[Middle English receden, from Old French receder, from Latin recdere : re-, re- + cdere, to go; see ked- in Indo-European Roots.]
(From The American Heritage Dictionary)
Perhaps Receda describes what the cube does? It allows movement between places/times, specifically backwards or in a receding manner?

if receda is a building, it would be The Building Cube, which may refer to the Academy itself, or perhaps a stronghold of knowledge/power.

one minor point of pedantry is that receda is definitely the plural case rather than the singular. This would make it the Buildings Cube.
I guess this could still refer to the Academy. It definitely rules out the chance that 'building' could be misconstrued as being a verb rather than a noun.
Whoah! They lost the whole Academy?

I'd do it, but I'm a bit new to all this.

I fixed Current Speculation and Items. The meaning of names spec should probably also go on the wiki at some point.

Point at the URL button that you use to make links when you write a reply (right above the bit where you type your reply). Just above your text box the syntax should come up - basically you get your first [ url ] tag (spaces left in there so it doesn't make what I'm typing a URL), stick an = after the url and then type the URL in there. Then stick the text of your link before the [ /url ] tag, e.g. [ url=http://www.perplexcity.com ]Perplex City[ /url ]
As for the paper on EDA's, I'm very rusty on probability density functions but I don't really see what relevance they would have to our game, thus I conclude that it's OOG. Still, I'll admit that without digging out all my old maths notes and spending a couple of weeks revising I'm not exactly an authority on the subject. I think we need thebruce for a more expert decision on this

I think the name of the object is going to have a multidimensional aesthetic/pun involved.
I combine "disagree" and "withdraw"(in a legal sense); to mean an object that went through a legal process so that an ownership-claimant can try to re-claim that asset through an established review process.
That the Academy openly pursues the cube suggests however that they are allowed to re-acquire it.
In the Hesketh Zeller bio it seems to me that this cube killed him, and it did so because he studied the cube too much, or was engaged with it at the time.
The video narration suggests the Academy or other Perplex City entities study other cultures. (perhaps one of the cube's properties) If they found a culture who could manipulate the cube, and Hesketh tried to stop them and lost, it lends a sort of "we know how to use this better than you do" sort of vibe. In legend over the years the Perplex City public (schoolchildren) may label the events as Receda because it was the time when the cube was taken.
This may have been an intellectual struggle or a religious one?

The Receda Cube may not be the only cube. Think about it - why was the cube's name blanked out? There may be others - just look at the Academy logo. Perhaps someone doesn't want a certain someone else to know which cube was stolen...?
