jd's death taking a toll on everyone

Pam,
I'm not sure if you've heard the tragic news here in Aglaura from this
past weekend, but as someone who has asked me about Aglaura and current events here in previous e-mails, I thought you would want to know what's been happening.
Douglas Willingham, the town's primary attorney, was found dead late
Saturday night or early Sunday morning. His body was found out in the woods near Diana's Grove Recreational Area, on one of the many trails leading away from there. The last I heard, they still don't really know what killed him; I've been told there were no immediately visible signs of trauma or injury. Hopefully the autopsy will answer that question.
Poor Phyllis Willingham! She and I may have had our difficulties in the
past but she certainly didn't deserve anything like this. Even though the
rumors were that she and Doug were having their problems, I'm sure this has got to be absolutely devastating on her. I'm going to go out to her place today and express my sympathies and see if there is anything at all I can do to help her in any way.
You know, this isn't easy for my son, Pat, the Mayor, either. He and
Doug had grown pretty close from working together for the past few years. He's taking this whole thing pretty hard but still has to go through the motions and duties of being Mayor, too. As his mother, I can't help worrying about him, you know.
Well, I must get to work. We're anticipating another influx of reporters,
tourists, and the generally curious into town in response to all this
and there are some things I need to do at the Library to get ready. For some reason, many of these people find there way into the Library to ask me about everything that's happened.

Sincerely,
Agatha Dobbs
Librarian

Dear Pam,

I just wanted to let you know that Phyllis, the boys and I all made it
through last night. Pam, Phyllis really is amazing. She manages to go through the motions, smiling and greeting people, thanking them for coming and all of that with hardly a complaint. I do not blame her for breaking down once the boys and I shove the last person out the door. I really hope that if I am ever placed in a similar situation, I can be as poised and confident as she has been.

I cannot imagine what it is like for her. Not only are the townspeople
harassing her, but we have had phone calls and visits from reporters,
lawyers, the state and local police, the feds and all manner of other people. I think they somehow feel she knows something about the mess Mr. Willingham was involved in. Phyllis got a few calls so far this morning. First Mr. Willingham's lawyer wants to speak to her and then I believe I will be accompanying her this afternoon to identify the body. She has also asked if I think she should make some sort of statement. The mayor seemed to expect her to, but I am not sure that will make a difference, but who am I to say?

I took a peek into Mr. Willingham's office again this morning and just
cannot get over how thorough the feds were in cleaning out the room. Every paper, every box, every thing is gone. They even broke through the locks on Mr. Willingham's desk in their zeal to collect and pack all of the evidence. Really! You should see how much damage was done to what looks like a fabulously expensive piece of furniture. They did not even give Phyllis a chance to look for a key, just broke it all open once she said she did not know where the key was.

Hopefully the wreaths she had me order yesterday will arrive, so we can
finally put them up on all of the outside doors and perhaps then people
will stop knocking on the store door and windows asking to come in and look around. God, people have no sense or manners, let alone a sense of
propriety!

Iris
