[META] FTP SITES

Ok, I know that there was a topic about the secure sites and it had conversations in regards to ftping ftp://perplexcity.com/ and how when you did that you could log in and view a /pub directory and it had an out of game welcome message. However, when you ftp ftp://projectsyzygy.com/ it is bringing up a login window. (I did a seach on ftp and projectsyzygy.com within the forum's and it returned nothing).

Why the difference? Why is ftp://projectsyzygy.com/ asking for a login if they could have easily set it up the same as perplexcity.com?

Just a guess, but maybe because Project Syzygy is closed? Have you tried this on ftp://recedacube.com/?

[edit]I just tried, and got an error message, then after I cancelled, it took me to the password login.

Re: [SPEC] FTP SITES

Well, you don't really have to log in in order for the welcome message and the public directory to be accessible.

Why didn't they set it up the same way as in perplexcity.com? *shrug* I think it's probably because they don't expect people to really go to projectsyzygy anymore, so they didn't bother... or it could different server defaults (or whatever those defaults are actually called). The point is - it seems kinda obvious that they left projectsyzygy up solely so that people that somehow only found "projectsyzygy" (and not perplexcity), or people that have been to the PS website long ago but haven't followed up on it, would not be taken to a dead site. I mean, the only really immediately relevant information there is: a) PS is done; b) now go to perplexcity.

And that brings me to my next point - let's leave PS' ftp alone Smile We weren't meant to log into it before (quite obviously, since PS is completed, and if we were meant to log in to it, we probably would have been nudged to it before it actually got completed), and there is *absolutely no reason* to think that we are meant to do it now.

recedacube.com isn't even there yet - it's just a parked domain. There probably isn't even an ftp server configured there yet. And when it is, I hope that we will get a clear hint that we are meant to try to log in Smile

well, projectsyzygy ftp site used to be anonymously accessible, but now it's not. i logged in several times to see if there was anything important or simply interesting, but all i got, was some empty directories, it was only a setup fault i guess. i beleive it wasn't intentionally left open. but [spec]they might open it up somewhere later in game. dunno. [/spec] Wink
but ftp's might be used somewhere later on.

i tried ftp://perplexcity.com, and got
Quote:
Directory: pub 2000.10.27. 0:00:00
File: welcome.msg 1 KB 2002.09.03. 0:00:00

The age of files and dirs have to make me think that they've been sitting there empty for ages.
welcome.msg:
Quote:
Welcome to the pair Networks Anonymous FTP server!

All transfers are logged; if you object to this, please disconnect now.

If you have any problems using this server, please contact supportSPLATpair.com.

/pub is empty.
now - DON'T mail support AT pair, cuz it's only a web hosting company. or well, if you really want to... Smile but if you do, and turns out to be OOG, prepare to be trouted!

I thought I had posted about this, but I guess not...

Quite a while ago, when I first got involved with this ARG I stumbled onto the name of the service provider email address and sent them an email warning them that they might get flooded with lots of emails from weird people asking about a cube. I explained about the game and told them that they should secure the port if it's not supposed to be open.

They responded with a "thank you" for the information and let me know that they were aware of the problem....

"Hi,

Thanks for contacting us.

I think I see what you mean. The Welcome message at the FTP site has
supportSPLATpair.com in it. This is actually normal and nothing to worry
about. We appreciate you getting in contact with us, however.

Have a great day.

Let's leave any FTPing into in-game sites alone unless we are specifically shown that this is what we are to do. Since there's been no sign of this, let's leave this topic alone.
