Backwards compatability is a must have for me as well.

But again like you, a 'full entertainment center' type of Xbox 2 would be awfully tempting...

Applying realism to the camera use, I wouldn't expect it to be used much beyond a PS2 eyetoy level at first. The reasons you list are more than enough for MS to hold off on using it further.

I'm okay with not having backward compatibility. I already have an xbox. The only time this may become an issue is when my xbox dies.

I'm looking at the NextBox360 and counting my pennies. I'm a sucker for gaming systems but I can't see it making a big splash with a sticker price over $300 AND it's supposed to be an all in one device. I still feel gamers are willing to spend the loot on a game device, but the masses will shy away from a device (stereo, tivo, whatever they view it as) that also plays games. Remember it's the masses who buy the 500 games in 1 system for their kids, thinking that they will not have to spend any more money on the next GTA, Halo, etc.

For me (and I'm pretty hardcore as gaming goes), the magic price point is $200. I'll buy the system once it hits that point because it should have a stable of good games by then. I'm willing to deviate from that if the NextBox360 has free Tivo like service built in. As for the camera, I don't have much hope for it. I remember Major Nelson's blogcast where he said it's currently Japan only because they have a MUCH faster network than in the US. Why waste the money? But in viewing the GDC keynote, did anyone notice that they had a "battery is low" warning for a controller pop up? Is this evidence of wireless controlers for the system? Just a thought.

And finally, I guess this is an apporpriate time to speculate on launch titles. Last year I was surveyed about a sequal to Crimson Skies. I thought it would be out on xbox but I'm hedging my bet that it will be announced as a launch title during E3.

Obviously, the camera is there to automatically kick players that take too long to wet the system.

Look, if you're going to insist on playing with old fogeys, you need to get with the idea that they need more time to shuffle off to the W.C., with their old fogey bladders!

More or less.

Now, see, this is kinda what gets me. Halo 2 sold 6 million + copies and rising, and that didn't just go to kids. I still hear alot more 'adults' on live than children. It's the adults that bought the game, not the kids, so ...

Agreed. Any sticker bearing a higher price than that might as well be painted with the White Hand of Saruman.

From IGN:

More info about the HD, wireless options, and controls oh my!

Douglass C. Perry wrote:

Hard Drive: Xenon's hard drive is optional. It's not built in like the current Xbox. A total of 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined. The Hard Drive will be a 2.5" form factor and sold separately. Microsoft's current plan is to require you to buy the hard drive to enable backward compatibility with current Xbox games. This way, Microsoft recovers the cost of its hard drive, plus it is most likely to give hard drive buyers Xbox Live subscriptions.

Wireless Options: Xenon will enable both wired and wireless controllers (like the Nintendo WaveBird or the Logitech controllers), and will come with RF receivers for wireless options. The system also supports an optional Internet router/adapter.

Controllers: The new controllers will be around the same size as the current S-controllers. Microsoft has eschewed the dual triggers for shoulder buttons, and the design is said to be a mixture between the current S-controllers and the current PS2 controllers. They will not feature slots for memory cards, which, we're told, are on the console itself. The system supports 64 megabyte memory cards. There are three controller slots, two controllers on front of the system, plus one USB on the back. Controllers have 2.5mm jacks for headset use.

Console Design: The Xenon console design is said to be much smaller than Xbox, which seems obvious. The new design is styled less like a Corvette and more organic in shape. Its size falls somewhere between the new slimmer PS Two and original PS2.

Important XBox 2 Info

The following comes from a fairly vulgar site (penny arcade) but had me giggling like a little monkey. You should not go if you are offended by the "B" word. (not -itch....the OTHER "B" word) (Not -astard either...the OTHER OTHER one)

SUGH. They are erasing everything they did right. the more analog the better. the size I understand as people somehow seem to prefer the children's controllers. The ps controllers are the least comfortable controllers ever made by man. But two control ports? That was stupid and outdated on the PSX. This day and age it is absolutely pathetic. Anger making. Boycott making.

If I wanted all of these mistakes I would have bought a PS2.

I think they meant 3 memory card slots.

2 on front, 1 USB one on back.

EDIT: i think it is actual controller ports, BUT that's why it comes with wireless as default. You just can't have 4 WIRED ones.

USB for the camera, maybe?

As for triggers, I heard they were having dual trigs AND 2 shoulder buttons (new B/W). EGM seemed to think so.
