Okay, so from the link she gave us:

http://home.earthlink.net/~appleharborweb/scans/

there are a few scans:
- a news paper article about the vagrant's death
- a picture of a charm Alyssa found in her garden
- a picture of a piece of paper Alyssa found in the garbage
- a letter for the News letter Alyssa got from Jake McCullen (and Odie)

Piece of paper from garden:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The letters are runes, and translate to
'thri-nein
eit shal bi don
wi haw suksidid
hi eis weith us now'

or, translated:

'03/09 (nineth of March)
it shall be done
we have succeeded
he is with us now'

The second line, 'it shall be done', has been crossed out

As well as finding out what the paper meant, we found what the three-triangled charm was:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
We found that the charm was called a Tria Prima Knot Pendant, from http://www.crucible.org/Jewelry.htm
The site claims it represents the Three Eternal Principles (Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt), and InSoMnIaC also claims that it is soul, body, and spirit.

Sounds Vagrant-ish to me.

Actually, the charm is this one: http://www.markdefrates.com/pages/valknut1.html
Quote:
It is said that this symbol of Norse Magick, the Valknut (also known as Odin's knot) is a contract between Odin and his acolytes, a binding spell. The symbol also refers to the Three Norns, the weavers of fate. Odin achieved the secret of changing fate through knowledge of the runes with the sacrifice of one of his eyes and by hanging himself from the World Tree, under which (not coincidentally) reside The Three Fates. Odin (Othin, the All Father) was one of the most popular of the Norse Warrior gods and remains important in the modern version of Norse magick, Asatru.

This fits in nicely with the runes on the piece of paper from the garbage, the hung man and the removal of his eye.

Maybe we're dealing with an Asatru cult?

Odin

Edit: Added some more speculations to this reply.

Odin! I think you're on to something, Kender.

-Didn't the old man get murdered on a wednesday? Wednesday is the day of Odin.
http://www.indepthinfo.com/weekdays/wednesday.shtml

-Alyssa said that the old man was preaching about the end of the world. That makes sense now, since the end of the world (Ragnarok) plays an important role in Norse mythology.

-Odin hung himself on the tree to gain knowledge. In this light, it is possible that ritual the "vagrants" performed, was done to gain knowledge. If so, perhaps they left so suddenly because they had learned something important?

-No one knew how the Vagrants arrived and left. Since they seem to be Scandinavian (they had a foreign accent and they worship Odin), the image of a boat does spring to mind. That would explain why no-one saw them leave. Perhaps they had a boat, hidden out of sight of the townspeople?

The Norse armageddeon is called Ragnarok.

http://www.winterscapes.com/uppsala/odin.htm
Quote:
He hung himself on the tree for nine days and nights, wounded by his own spear. The Havamal relates this tale as "I know I hung on that windswept tree, / Swung there for nine long nights, / Wounded by my own blade, / Bloodied for Odin, / Myself an offering to myself: / Bound to the tree / That no man knows / Whither the roots of it run. / None gave me bread, / None gave me drink. / Down to the deepest depths I peered / Until I spied the runes. / With a roaring cry I seized them up, / Then dizzy and fainting I fell. / Well being I won / And wisdom too. / I grew and took joy in my growth: / From a word to a word / I was led to a word, / From a deed to another deed." In this way Odin won the runes, and the knowledge that brought into the worlds of gods and men both. In this way he brought galdr into existence. In this way he gained a symbolic understanding of all things. And it may be that he had to die for other reasons as well. After all, what's the use of a living god of the dead?
