I'll save the ascii translation for someone else (I've done too much of that over in Daemonworks - it's time consuming, to say the least.)

I would note that the memberslist page has websites for all your in-game characters, though. Might be good stuff to check there.

in translating the ascii, is there an online resource that lists the complementary alphanumeric characters to the ascii?

another thing, will there be a number to subtract from these numbers to get to the correct ascii format, or is it already there?

Okay, Catherwood and I figured out the code on the forum.
This is what I did for the 478:_etioanrsdghpu.myblfvcwkq message:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Convert all the numbers to binary and string them all together.
2. replace all occurrences of 00 with a space
3. replace all occurrences of 24 1's with q (last letter in the header)
4. replace all occurrences of 23 1's with k (one to last letter in the header)
5. continue doing this
6. remove all the 0's

this is the decoded message:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
here are some tips for getting around the city. walk whenever possible. wear a hood to prevent getting spotted on camera. if taking the train get a single ride ticket. tear it up after you use it. dispose the pieces in separage trashbins. if you spot trouble get away immediately. dont hang around to be a hero or you might end up a witness. be discrete. dont buy any thing from a vendor. vendors have long memories and are the first people to be questioned in an investigation.

If this is old then why did they say it was different

I looked at the Societas Solanum stuff this weekend and I thought it might be related, but I was dissuaded by the email they sent Steve saying it was something new.

I thought that game started before the card was sent, although Steve did say that he hadn't checked the mailbox for a few days, so I could be wrong about the timing.

PS I saw the new forum for this game (thanks site admins) but I didn't think this should be the first post in there. Very Happy

edit: I looked at the immersion unlimited thread on Josh's strange dream part 2 - I agree that these are related, but I am not sure how to organize the information.

Among this board -which has two places to talk about this game-, iu and the persistence board we have information in three places and two different chat rooms. I suggest that before that the people actively playing this game may want to work out a way to minimize this... or are the two boards supposed to be two different teams?

So...this is just a continuation of Strange Dreams? Odd.

I didn't follow that one, so I'm a little confused here. How does this relate to the Faery/Vagabond stuff?

FWIW, got another email from Faery. I'm not sure if this is even *relevant* any more, since it seems that the Vagabond mythology is going to be a lot less central than it originally appeared, but I'll post the relevant portions of the email here:

Faery wrote:

tenuous faith. Not that anyone has ever succeded -- but I have stood

source...

Enough blood has been spilled over the veracity of the equivocal. I
share in that guilt, which is perhaps why I am so loath to tread that
path lightly ever again. Certainly never again over resonable
dialogue!

Your assumtion is correct, to a point. I may be unable to offer an
answer for every question to your satisfaction. However, it is the
unasked question that is never answered. I find your investigative
technique fascinating, and enjoy considering the trails you seek as
indicative of your intent. It reminds me of a time we, in a moment of
leisure, tried to guess the outcome of a contest based solely on
outward observations of the rider -- his demeanor, the confidence in
which he carried his lance, how he treated his mount. We found it
easier to accurately predict the victor based on these characteristics
over more obvious traits such as strength, experience, or favorite of
the audience!

Worry not over terminology. If there is any confusion over
definition, I shall endeavour to defer to your intent rather than
lecture on correct useage....

Those who perport to seek what you call Gnosis, either through
birthright or divine intervention, seek the wrong goals for the wrong
reasons. One truth we hold is that there is an immortal soul. The
purpose of each soul is to seek the light of truth. Only by beholding
truth may the soul fulfill it's destiny, to become closer to the
Creator. As Genesis tells of your Creator separating Night from Day,
so has our study told us that Truth was separated from chaos. The
Light of Truth cannot be broken, but it may be obscured. Lies,
misdirection and the unknown all may bar our search.

Yet this is all a simplification of our way. The search for truth and
knowledge, we have learned, is an eternal one. An indvidual neuron
could not comprehend the mind entire. Only the Creator may know
Everything, for the Creator is Infinite as well as eternal....

There is a danger of confusion when differentiating aspects of the
Creator from the Creator itself. We hold to concepts such as Wisdom
not as faces but as characteristics that help define a certain ideal.
Wisdom is reason based upon Knowledge of Truth. Wisdom is not a
spirit unto itself that needs seeking separate from Knowledge.
Through the earning of Knowledge, Wisdom is granted.

The Tree of Knowedge was held to be forbidden by the Creator of
Genesis. Yet we hold that our purpose is to seek Knowledge. It is
contradictions such as these that vex those we wish to share our
Knowledge with. We have our own legends of such a Tree, from which
knowledge has been earned not through disobedience but through trial
and sacrifice.

The true paradox is in the flawed nature of Humanity. If we hold to
the truth that the purpose our existence is the pursuit of Knowledge,
then once that purpose is understood it should be to the benefit of
all humans to cooperate towards that purpose. Yet we find that
humanity itself cannot achieve a focus of purpose, and indeed it
appears it is against our very nature to do so! If our nature
contradicts the very fullfillment of that for which we were created,
then why were were created with such flaws or such purpose?

The answer is that Knowledge may only be earned through ordeal and
effort. If we exist merely as empty vessles for the task of
collecting Knowledge, then we could not be able to comprehend the
value of what we had received. Only when we have properly earned that
which we seek may we appreciate the purpose for which we owe the
existence of our soul.

That is an interesting perspective, but I fear an incomplete one. It
assumes that there are but two structures, Heaven and Earth, and that
they are indivisible and impermeable. As humans constitute an
immortal soul associated with a mortal body, they have the benefit of
but those perspectives.

But we are not all so fettered. The He of whom I speak has tried to
share this knowledge with others. While I, for instance, may not
accompany him wherever he may wander, we have shared experiences most other mortals can never conceive of in this lifetime. It is because
of Knowledge we share that I continue to be his companion, beyond a
time which most souls would have shed their mortal selves and moved on
to continue their search beyond....

I am reminded of an old saying, "He who watches the sky too closely
trips on the ground beneath their feet." We must satisfy all the
necessities of being Human, not just the spiritual ones. Unless, one
finds a way to transcend what it means to be human.

It would be inapropriate for me to name Him without his permission,
and there is an understanding amongst us that follow Him that his past
identities are so confused by history and myth that He might be judged
unfairly. Let me share with you but one legend.

Not long after He came into the Knowledge, He wandered far and came
across a tribe of people he had never seen before. Not wishing to be
seen as an intruder, he hid himself in the guise of a bird amongst the
trees. But he was discovered. Instead of fleeing the curious
people, he revealed himself as a bringer of gifts. So miraculous was
his appearance that they thought him decended from the Stars. He told
them of his travels, and educated them in the ways of chronology and
agriculture. He then left them, with the promise of someday
returning.

Many generations later, the people had not forgotten his promise.
When a strange visitor appeared to them one day, they celebrated his
arrival as His return. The strange visitor repaid their admiration by
slaughtering their entire race, in the name of his own religion.

Such is the danger in worshipping Him as an Omnipotent deity.

Not sure if I'm going to have time to continue playing this, and I'm also not sure whether the PM(s) was/were intending for this to be posted, or whether they were just playing with me, but for what it's worth, should the mythology become important, there it is.

Well crap I just spent all morning reading through this thread to get caught up on harbingers now I have to go back to the beginning to do my homework on strange dreams. Such is the life of an ARGer. So do we have any leads on passwords for the aristotle website?
