[PUZZLE] Graphs and shortest path

I've been studying the graph puzzle, trying to find something useful. I found the shortest paths for the pentagram, if you don't include cycles (cycles=visiting nodes more than once).

Please check what I've done. The big problem is that if you are allowed to visit nodes more than once, you can go to that little loop of negatives on the left side an infinite number of times, constantly decreasing the length of all paths to negative infinity.

That might be what symbol4.png is warning about, I'm not sure. If we look at symbol2.png, we can follow the path and get various weights. If I've worked it right, the values are:
-2,-5,-4,1,-6,-3,-1,-3,-2,-3

In the original graph, it looks like the node values should be:
-1,1,4,7,4,9
or if we hit 7 twice:
-1,1,4,7,4,7,9

I'm not sure if the values are supposed to represent letters (maybe an offset from from some central letter?), but this puzzle has been bothering me.

Any ideas?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
subject: hints
you need to study symbol zero and zeroa and four
like zeroa says three is not four

OK, back to the pictures!

Edit: symbol0.png and symbol0a.png are in fact different. The -2 on the left side on symbol0a is actually a 3 in symbol0, yet the node value "4" remains the same.

The only difference I can see between symbol3.png and symbol4.png is that there is a "5" in the upper left hand corner that switches places and orientation.

Anybody see anything else?

I finally got it!!! yay

end result key:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ozymandias

Now the long explanation:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
After looking at the symbols again per vis's suggestion, I decided the orientation of the number determined which direction the edge should go: left to right when looking at the number right side up.

I stuck the new edges into a Bellman-Ford program, got the distances, then followed the curve:

18 3 2 16 4 17 7 12 4 22

When you convert that to letters and ROT-23, you get ozymandias.

Though the new pages leave something to be desired ...
