They are trying to make it look like a game... so we will do their bidding. Wink

Maybe this all some extra-dimesnsional practical joke. When we find the cube it's going to say GOTCHA in big letters.

After a year in the making, that has been seen since first print. I hope not.

Maybe they're not recruiting players. Maybe they're recruiting people to help find the cube. That's why in-game characters Sente and Dinah (or xxxx, if you prefer) are discussing all this. I think they're actually talking about their efforts to get as much help as possible, rather than their attempt to recruit players for Perplex City. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see anything in the emails that couldn't be explained as Sente talking about his helpers, rather than the PMs talking about their players.

I am reminded of that old quote which keeps getting dragged up, where the PMs state they have "very unusal partners".

Well, Sente would be a pretty unusual partner. You know .. that whole working-hand-in-hand-with-a-character-in-the-game-created-by-me.... this is sort of ... unusual.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the "unusual partner" one major source of real-life funding? Sente, being fictional, might not be the best person to go to to back your new ARG. Clever idea, though.

For this 'game', a few things make me more confident than usual that it is just a game, which we won't go into. But sooner or later, someone somewhere could use a clever ARG for a more sinister purpose, and for me, that thought always leaves any game with a strange sense of distrust for it all.

I mean, with the lack of evidence to the actual cube storyline, what if the story took a completely different turn at some point? What if we found out that the story was actually hiding the 'real' story, and who knows what that could be?

i agree. reading it in that vein would fit nicely. but still, i think the tone of the emails are a bit too 'light' for a people who have just lost the most precious artefact in their culture.. but hey maybe sente found beston's cellar... Laughing

Yeah, KSG, that makes the most sense. After reading their conversation again. And also, they'd have to keep themselves undercover, hence the crypted messages. I think all the "clouds" are for simply remaining anonymous.

Anyway, sthing that seems to justify KSG's theory:

Spec, but maybe it makes sense:
xxxx seems to be the boss of Sente - she [cant explain, buti have to think xxxx is a she] pulls the strings, she gives us sente the snippets, etc. if the cube is so important to them, then it's possible that the perplexian government / city counsil is involved in finding it, right? And also, it seems like that she [he] just shows up sometimes, sends sente the commands, and then disappears back in the mist. Why i have to think this, is because all that e-mailing was done on one day... Dunno, it is simply spec.

Thought it might be nice to show the Dinah print-out in chronological order, otherwise its quite confusing to follow (then again, maybe nobody but me cares anymore):

I agree. We were actually talking about this last night. I think xxxx mentioned

This only leaves one slot. I'll get back to you later - I'll go and ask the others if
they've had any new ideas on this.

in one of the windows above it:

Possible motives for the theft remain unclear. A ransom demand is seen as one
likely development, as the Cube, whose value is almost incalculable, could not
be sold on the open market. John Ha, owner of the Ha Gallery on the Mobius
Strip, conjectured that the Cube may have been stolen "to order" for a wealthy
collector.

Unless of course you follow this one with a witty reply that our hard-core webcam

I wondered if it might be Search For Cube. If there are a whole team of people working on this there might be a steering comittee, who for example - plan the overall strategy. If so, they may well be using an acronym, either because its easier than saying it each time, or because they don't want others who aren't involved to know what a meeting is about.
