Email Phyllis Don sends flowers

Dearest Sunny,

One wonders why people send flowers to the bereaved. They are all lovely when delivered but then they fade and turn brown around the edges as the life ebbs out of them. It seems a rather blatant metaphor for the process of dying and a not too cheerful reminder to the living of their dearly departed. Just yesterday we filled trash bins full of the decayed floral offerings that had been delivered at the first of the week. This morning a monstrous display arrived to fill the gap. I'm not saying it wasn't tastefully done, just extravagant in an overtly expensive way. I almost fainted when I read the card:

"My Dear Mrs. Willingham,
It is with sad regret that I reach out to you in our time of mutual loss and offer my condolences. Your Douglas was worth ten of my Sal but the grief is the same. I look forward to meeting with you again soon.
Sincerely,
Don Marzano"

Now proper etiquette dictates that I must reply with thanks and offer some sympathy for his lost son but I really, really do not want to do that. Not doing so would risk offending him and that's not a good option either. I have an involuntary shudder every time I think of that man.

Why on earth did he come by the shop on that fateful day? Instead of giving him an alibi, doesn't it place him near the scene of the crime? I mean, if Douglas' death was a crime; we won't know for sure until the Coroner's Report. But, Sal Marzano's death was certainly a crime. And, don't we all FEEL that the Don was responsible in some way? The only thing I can suppose is that he wants the house. He serves the "dark lord" Iris saw in her vision or he IS the "dark lord." I can certainly resist whatever charm he intends to apply but what might he do to force me to sell to him? Or could he want something else entirely? My imagination is exhausted. I don't know what to do! I swear my life would be a complete nightmare if it weren't for Iris, Chris, James and all of you!

Love,
Phyllis

This sounds like an apology for what his son did. And for him to demean his own son like this speaks volumes. A grieving father referring to son as pond scum sounds like good old dad had him whacked for messing up bad.

So what was the final act that send dad over the edge?

Don't Betray Da'Family

From what Angie overheard at Empty Threats, the Don thought Sal was an idiot and kicked him out of the business. My current spec is Sal was the mystery witness expected at the Grand Jury. We don't know yet if he got to testify or if he got dumped in the lake before he could testify. But, if he was even thinking about betraying da'family, he would have gotten whacked without a second thought. I mean, didn't the Godfather kill his own brother for being an idiot.

It could be the grand jury testimony, or it could be that he discovered Sal was helping Dale, or a combination of both. If Sal was going with Dale to the metting with JD and tried to stop Don Marzano from killing JD, Sal's death could be part of that. Then dump Sal in the lake to cover that connection. It would look odd for JD and Sal to both have died in the same area at the same time, and bring a lot more scrutiny to Don.
