Regarding the size of readership issue:

a.) It makes sense there would be a higher percentage of newspaper readers (compared to population) than normal in an intellectual society.

b.) Not all the readers may be in Perplex City. I have sitting next to me a copy of the New York Times I bought in a convenience store, and I live in Arizona.

Wowza ---- So I work all day then I spend all night searching that I don't repeat spec...well it deffo seem's to me no matter what you can't log in to any extra pages even if you had a relevant cookie 'blagger' and even if you did you'd need an original cookie to blag it with...hmmm...nice thought though...I think sente is desperate for our help as there seems to be mutany...Maybe the pages will get updated we might get an email off sente directing us to his subscription key...anyway all I have managed to do is email the editor, a mail that you know won't have bounced to the editor has been sent by myself asking the current exchange rate from our Earthly Sterling to their Alien Lects...I did ask if they care for the novelty of a homosapien earthling being a subscriber I'd gladly take a free subscription...Beano out!

( Anyone notice whoever wrote the css file could've saved a few bytes here and there?! Razz )

in terms of what and where, my first thought, actually, is a follower. there have been several sci fi stories regarding planets exactly opposite the sun as earth, or in the same orbit but slightly out of sync in time/space (kinda another dimension, but not) or both. by the way, has anyone mentioned a possibility that it is a hypercube? i searched, but all i found were discussions of the cube movies.

I'm a bit perplexed (no pun intended) that I don't seem to be able to get to see the adverts, or masthead image (I assume there is one from what people have said) on the Sentinel website in either IE or Firefox... any clues as to why? Slightly scared I might be missing something in the long run because of this...

I'm still hoping on a 'key' being some kind of hand-held networked device, vital for live in a technologically driven, perplexcity lifestyle that their version of the site (remember we're only getting the external edition which I'm guessing has been translated and converted from it's original incarnation into a website viewable over Earth's relatively primative Internet) can access and thus allow them instant access to the remainder of the site if their Key contains the required input data. At first I was thinking of the possibility of fully networked neural implants but I guess you cant really point those Razz so I'll stick with the hand-held device theory.

Unfortunately this means that:
1. Emailing the site will achieve nothing as their world could easily not use our email system. At least until Sente or whoever has found a way to get it to work (he's already done it once on the main Perplexcity.com site so I'm hoping it wont be too long)

2. We have no key, nor any way of getting one. As such the rest of the site will remain blocked until Sente's team can convert the rest of it into something we can gain access to.

OF course, you don't really DIAL a telephone any more, either. The term could be a holdover term from a previous version of the technology. And don't people refer to pointing their browser to (such and such address)? That's really the first feeling I had when I read "Point your key to". Could a key be some sort of secure browser software that provides identity information to the sites it contacts? (like cookies, but better)

If you have a firewall installed such as Norton Personal Firewall, which comes with an ad blocker, it could be the problem. I was in that situation this morning, and unfortunately, the only solution i came with was to disable the ad blocker for the duration of visits to any sites related to perplexcity, and then switch it back on, as there doesn't seem to be a way to customise the adblocker to allow certain sites to display them.

When I first read about the "keys", I thought they were talking about the "passive badge" that is referenced in the Gatehouse 24 logs.

Although if that's true, there is probably no chance of us ever getting access to those sections of the site, so it must be false.

I had the idea that their newspapers are like tabloid-size PDA's, and the key was like a remote control issued to subscribers. And we're seeing the pages that they see on their "newspapers" in our browsers. But it's anybody's guess.

most of the ad blockers stop popup ads, but not the actual ones in the page...don't give up yet...they're quality ads Wink

2 things about that idea.

1. The consistent, rather than occasional, use of 'Point your key at' Plus the possible link between these keys and the 'Key Surety' technology company suggest to me that these keys are actual physical objects.

2. The lack of any sort of input box anywhere on the site and the ensuing reliance on 'authentication' means that either you can only ever access the majority of the site from your home PC equivolent or, and IMO more likely, that each individual carries the means of their own authentication around with them. After all, if you access unfiction from an internet cafe in another country you can't expect the cookies to log you in. You would need your own form of ID. In this case, a key.

Taking off on brat-sampson's observations: I speculate the Key is even a bit like a PDA. the newsfeed downloads into it, and as it does, the source checks to see the validity of the Key's authentication.

Or in other words, the sentinal has a standing account in your name which is billed to your key, and when you visit their site, the sentinel checks to see if the account associated with the key is paid.
