Apple.

All the way.

I read rumours on some weird Mac-ish website, that the next generation of Apple computers were to be the G5 Cube. Usually, Apple uppgrade their already existing products - G5 Cube becomes a logical extension of the G4 Cube.

Wishful thinking perhaps, but none the less enjoyable.

I'm kinda thinking that if it's an "unusual" sponsor, it ain't going to be fillum or computer oriented...

can't wait to buy my Jay inspired cube poof from Ikea's new Kiteway range

The Case for Apple

    1) The quote "change the world", used in the initial flash was from Steve Jobs (Apple) to John Sculley (Pepsi) in 1984.
    2) Apple computers used to load with a splash screen which said "Hello World".
    3) The initial flash featured a Mac Computer.
    4) Apple once made the G4 Cube.
    5) Microsoft were behind ILB, a huge success, could Apple be trying their own?
    6) Adrian and co. mentioned an "Unusual Client". Apple could be considered unusual and often innovative (see next point).
    7) Given the success of the iPod, another 'unusual' venture may well be in the works for Apple. Additionally, iPod's success has led to doubling of share value. They are rolling in it.
Cool Finally, the long and drawn out start of PS, could be accounted for through product development ties.

So there you have it, more than just coincidence, surely?

OK, time to start the Apple backlash; I hope it's not them cos I prefer PCs *ducks*

But let's look at things objectively:
1. The quote is relevant to any groundbreaking venture. Personally I think this is the strongest evidence for a link and it looks fairly tenuous to me.

2. As has been mentioned plenty of times, Hello World is an extremely common phrase in computing used to test I/O - in the process of learning C, C++, Java, HTML and Javascript the very first thing I was taught to do with each of them was to make Hello World appear on screen even though I learnt all of them from different sources.

3. The initial flash was presumably done by someone with a background in graphic design (since that's the sort of person who usually develops such things). Graphic designers tend to use Apples so when it was being designed it could simply be that they took a picture of their own desk.

4. Bajillions of things are called a something-cube; it could just as easily be a Star Trek Borg tie-in based on this.

5. It was Bungie who were directly behind ILB, not MS (though, yes, they own Bungie). And IIRC the idea didn't even come from Bungie - it was an external partner who ran the game. Suggesting that because MS had this tenuous link then Apple could be doing the same is really stretching. Smile

6. Tons of companies are considered unusual, not that Apple is especially weird anyway. Yes, they had all those Think Different adverts - it's corporate branding just the same as Pepsi being marketed as 'The Choice of a new generation' back in the 80s.

7. OK, yeah, they're rolling in it but if that's their reason for producing the iPod then what's the revenue stream in this case? We're not paying to play and I think most people are well enough aware of the company for in-game advertising to only give them a small bump in profits.

8. The huge wait until the start could just be down to making sure they've got as many people as possible playing the game. Hype, rather than waiting for tie-ins.

I don't think the evidence we have ATM is enough to call whether it's coincidence or not. Though I've seen way too many iPod adverts to be willing to actively go out and find any more.

Besides, I've got a Monolith Wink

I don't necessarily think that Apple is the 'unusual partner' at this time, but it seems that there will be some sort of hook, and at the moment, Apple is as good as any. I am sure a million others will become possible over time, either reinforcing or completely destroying this theory. One to keep an eye on is the Hitchhiker movie, though that is due in April, so it is unlikely PPC will have concluded by then.

I guess we just have to wait and see.

*throws more fuel on the fire*

Pure spec, but: given the recently revealed name of the Receda Cube, and the possibility that it may mean "building(s)," how about an architectural firm as an unusual sponsor?

They may be building some sort of cube-like or cube-inspired structure, and wanted a sufficiently esoteric and artsy introduction. Perhaps an Academy of sorts, like a new art college?

I think it's a marketing ploy for Scion's xB.

Barring that, perhaps they're selling interdimensional travle devices shaped like a cube. That would be pretty unusual.

[SPEC] Point your key...

sudden thought hit me. point your key. semacode. coorporate sponsored game thats employing a buncha people, registering domains left and right, producing movies, printing postcards.

the key is a pda like device, sort of a wonder gadget, capable of connecting to teh web, and perhaps to a propriatary aolish network. some of the people involved will win them free sent to them, and some of the puzzles will then revolve around those few people. just a thought.

actually, i put it where i put it becuase i had hoped to get a bunch of discussion on the nature of the keys, the possibility that they WERE a physichal object like a few had suggested, and that we might actually get our hands on them. i was hoping to then get a full thread rolling on just the keys.

Problem with that is that we have no real information, so it would just be a spec thread about a subject that could end up relating to the game in no relevant matter.

Before I read this, I was thinking the same thing. My guess is that they're relaunching the Cube since it didn't got anywhere.
