The Sentinel's editor himself refers to Earth as "some place that only Academy researchers can vouch even exists, much less currently communicate with" - yet the Sentinel can receive e-mail from here with a breeze??

I wouldn't call a year of Sente setting things up a "breeze".

Difficulty in establishing communication doesn't mean there's difficulty in sending messages after that link is established.

I agree, as I mentioned before the whole mixture of technology on the sentinel site is very odd. Didn't they say that only Sente or the Academy could communicate with us? I still think it was ginned up for us, but we will see.

way back on page 3, this looks good but I have no clue where it takes us. Ideas?

About the futures page:
Here are some possibilities:
1. The messages hidden are for us as players.
2. The messages hidden are a way of communicating with other characters in the story. I am trying to match up things like the "ask her and she will come" from last week with stories this week - engagement? Along this line, the mention of teams makes me wonder if they are involved in the cheating scandal somehow.

I also think that the way the clues may be written to be solved cryptically as in the way that Alison_1 mentions above.

Does anybody have the Futures text from last week? If there are clues hidden in the text, the possibility is either

a) There were clues in there the first time that relate to the same clues this week
OR
b) The clues are a new addition and we can ignore last week's Futures.

Personally, I think last week's were just as cryptic to look at again, but the fact that we can't access them anymore could mean it's not important anymore.

Do we include the word "roll" in the eel and cucumber thing? Or is that the "instruction" for us to mess around with the words "eel and cucumber"?

The anagram server (and me and some paper - headache!) have got:-

A BRUCE CLUE MEND (no pressure there Bruce, but you seem to be the chosen!)

A CUBER CLUE MEND (ah, it's just Bruce again, he's a cuber, he should mend!)

I got CARD NUMBER IS CLUE (but I included "sushi" and "rolls" in that, and had left-overs)

with the "an eel and cucumber roll", I got NURU CAN BE CLEARED but had a few letters left...

grrr

AD CUE CLUE NUMBER? AD CLUE NUMBER CUE? CUE NUMBER CLUE AD? AD NUMBER CLUE CUE?

There *has* to be something there!

It's nice, but I think the "rolls" needs to go directly after the "cucumber", because the "LL" lines up with the "00" that way.

true, except that the point was a code changing every three. if you do it that way, the two lls dont line up in sets of 3. therefore, they SHOULDNT be the same number. of cousre, by that logic, cucu 4848 is goofy as well. also, the way it was stated in the acutual futures. but i dont think its actually related.

I was hoping the wiki-mirror would. But somehow the 3/21 mirror copy has the Features page of 3/28.

It can't be 3, otherwise "and" wouldn't work.

I've been giving this some thought, and while I haven't discovered anything, here's where my head is...

The Futures section is definitely a puzzle. But I don't think each future points to some outside clue. I think the Futures as a whole needs to be solved, and then the solution of that is the clue. Each future is simply a clue to solving the whole Futures section. For instance,

Quote:
The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Shuffle your way to heaven at your weekly card game. Bet big. Triangles are go.

I think this means we need to shuffle the futures in groups of three (triangles). So, each group of three futures should be analyzed separately and then one of those should be "bet big", meaning it has the greatest impact. The other two might have minor meaning. So, far instance, I might group the first three as -

Quote:
The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Shuffle your way to heaven at your weekly card game. Bet big. Triangles are go.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Floundering? Out of options? Do what I do when trouble hits: Sushi! Have an eel and cucumber roll; it brings you luck.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
The Archer has you in her sights. Should your subdolous ways slip, she'll snarl. Scarper.

I would put The Wave first because that's the clue to the overall puzzle, and then I think the cucumber one just smacks as being more useful than the next one.

The next group of three have a similar theme - taking up arms, get together with a like mind, skirmish against a rival - they all seem to talk about working with others.

Quote:
The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
The fruits of your labor are sour. Taking up arms is never suggested, though it is often appropriate. Just don't forget to take backup.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Great minds think alike, so get together with a like mind this week. Let two halves make a sphere.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Your fiery nature ignites a skirmish against a rival team. Funnel your energies into something positive, and stop it. You know, before someone loses an eye.

And so on... I don't want to bore you all with this since I'm not sure where it would lead, but I thought the triangles, the base 3, the shuffling, and the thematic similarities with every three futures was too much of a coincidence to be nothing....

about that number

question: is it possible to reverse engineer the code and find out what the key was? I don't know how to go about doing this or I would try it.

hagfish announced:

<Hagfish> "Eel and cucumber rolls" = "Unscramble older clue"

sounds good to me.

For a stream cypher, yes. If you have 2 elements of Plaintext (P), key (K), and cyphertext (C) you can extract the other one. Eg:
P + K = C
rearranges to
K = C - P

We have C, but are not sure about P. Unless C - P resolves to a meaningful K (eg: an english word) we still won't be sure. Going to give it a try now.

"Shuffle your way to heaven ... "

Well, we have Crispy Heaven - a bite out of heaven ... Crispy Heaven is our way to Heaven, so Rearrange Crispy Heaven ...

not got any further than that, but perhaps we can use the rest of the future to make a longer clue?

So it looks like it's time to go back to the first "Futures", I reckon, I reckon...
