Lovecraftian "ARG": Cthulhu Lives! Doubtless those truely interested in such a manner of the thing which I am preparing to reveal will already have the knowledge contained herein, and those to whom such a revelation would be new are one of the mindless flock, loathe to unfetter their minds and souls to the gaping expanses of the infinite cosmos hinted within my words. These I have briefly considered, yet, I was so inclined by a desire to implicate this discovery of mine with related ventures that I shall, perhaps, provide a benefitial education by listing this Game amongst others of like kind.
The discovery occured whilst I was perusing several pages of the internet concerning an unrelated topic, and I need not delve further into explanation. Suffice it to say that discoveries of an unexpected nature are always those most satisfying.
Most intriguing in the discovery was the exhumation, so to speak, of the intricate similarities between role-playing games and alternate-reality games, the former having a singular place in the ancestry of the Game. My concern is explicitly that all people whom should find this uncovery of mine would proceed to engage the Game in such a manner as would be wholly uncouth and ill-suited for the prescribed play of the Game.
Thus, all warnings and considerations being prodused for the observation of the kind reader, I shall proceed to reveal the location of the ancient secret which threatens a man's consummate sanity if he delves too far into unspeakable Game. The answer, for those daring enough to seek it, lies here (brought to you by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society ).

why, in non-Lovecraftian language

Because, according to the website, Cthulhu Lives! is more progenically related to the RPG Call of Cthulhu than to the general body of ARGs. The description of it as an ARG comes from my interpretation. It looks to me like a cross between a RPG and an ARG.

Excellent. Thanks for the clarification.
/me dreads the inevitable RP-ARG (or AR-RPG) distinction to any number of upcoming games.

Try as I might, I never could get into Lovecraft's writing. It's too convoluted. <Amadeus> Too many notes. </Amadeus>

That's correct. The CL! games are LARPs based on CoC. They do not follow ARG conventions and never will, I would imagine. The game also predates ARGs by a notable margin. If you'd like more information about Lovecraftian gaming Yog-Sothoth is an excellent source. That said, this isn't an ARG and people should probably move along; you won't find that type of game there...

I've always heard Cthulu pronounced ~ KA-TOO-LOO~ with the "h" being silent...have no idea if that's the correct way...

Yaaaay, Wikipedia to the rescue!
Quote:
"Cthulhu" is usually pronounced [kəˈθuːluː] (IPA transliteration), but according to Lovecraft, this is an attempt by human speakers to pronounce a name that is actually in an ancient language alien to them. Lovecraft speculated that KHLUL'HLOO, might be closer to the original name.

Isn't ARRPG the "over-65" retirement program for gamers?

I'd love to play a Lovecraftian ARG as well. Of coure it'd be our last since we'd all go crazy if it was done right. Yay, I always wanted white hair before I turn 25.
I think it would be suited well for an ARG actually. Lovecraft was a master of horror for his time. Part of his unique technique had him putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations. But the way they got there, they started off in an ordinary situation...and it went downhill from there. There's a major paranoia component in any well run CoC game.
"Ok. You go in as bait. We'll wait for the pre-arranged signal- a scream- and then run in to rescue you and catch the _insert monster/cult here_ by surprise." *At the signal the party decides to run away. The bait commits suicide rather than get eaten alive.* (From an actual game.)
But for an ARG- you got us, the players, ordinary people who don't (probably don't) believe in elder gods, demons, stuff from other dimensions. We are in an ordinary situation, our own lives. The PMs intervene from there, messages, odd occurrances, etc. And so it begins.
