[SPEC] Troglodytes

Are they doing animal testings on Ares station?

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=10&q=troglodyte

The plot thickens ...

Probably... but I think the "animals" might actually be "humans". And Max Eatons death may have been the result of "the creation killing the creator".

That fits with Hannah's post:

The "creation" could have carved the knife and killed Max

... or maybe I'm just talking crazy.

Pan troglodytes is the species name for chimpanzees. (See http://www.thebigzoo.com/Animals/Chimpanzee.asp )

Perhaps they're doing experiments to create smarter chimps? It would make sense that such work would be done on Mars and kept secret, as it is most likely illegal on Earth.

Even normal chimps have been known to make and use simple tools, so it's not much of a strech to say they could have made the crude knife used to kill Max.

I wonder if the arrested miners weren't actually suspects, but simply found out too much about the secret experiments and had to be kept from telling anyone.

well now I am almost positive that they are doing some experiments on a close relative of man. http://citizens.aresstation.com/?q=node/53. There Hannah says:

the blood isn't human blood. It's really close to human DNA but it is different enough that I think it's some sort of monkey.

So probably some experiment has gone wrong.

Ok, filling out the spec on what's going on here:

I've just spent some time thinking about Max's file on troglodytes in light of Hanna's discovery of the infected non-human blood.

Reminding you of the file I'm talking about:
Quote:

Troglodyte survival progress:

Note: first specimens ( 0A: 1-50 ) arrived with first shipment of miner personnel.

02JAN81 – Batch 1A jumpstarted

06APL81 – Batch 2A jumpstarted in 0 G with sequence 2: hoping for improved resistance to cold.

13SEP81 – 3A jumpstarted using same as 2A. 5% will be used for control.

21DEC81 – X2A administered to 0A: 1-26 with a 60% casualty rate after two weeks.

05MAY82 – 1A finished the jumpstart. Ready for tests. X2A-1 administered. 80% casualty after two weeks.

08OCT82 – 2A jumpstart finished. Proved resistant to X2A-3, casualty rate down to 56%

Lab reports difficulties in X2A-5. Lifespan too short / not resilient enough for air transfer. Running close to deadline, promise results by FEB83

16FEB83 – 3A jumpstart group aged enough for tests. X2A-5 will be administered in the morning.

...

3A group smarter than anticipated. Situation correction in progress.

The narrative that I get from this log file is that the researchers started with a group of chimps (or some other primate - I'm just assuming chimp because of the "troglodytes" thing) that arrived with the first miners (0A). From these, they are either breeding or cloning successive generations (1A - 3A).

Once each group of subjects has matured, they are exposed to a virus (X2A through X2A-5). Modifications are then made to the virus and the next group of chimps is exposed to a new strain of the virus.

My first instinct is that they are working on a biological weapons system. The comments about casualty rates and the difficulties with X2A-5 ("Lifespan too short / not resilient enough for air transfer") suggest they are working to create a highly-deadly airborn pathogen.

Max mentions that group 3A is smarter than anticipated, and the new virus apparently cannot be administered through the air. Perhaps for the first time the researchers were forced to open the cages and infect the subjects physically? Maybe the chimps didn't like that, and that's how Chester got bitten. It seems likely that some of the subjects escaped. Otherwise, how would Hanna have found their blood in the cleaning bot?

I think the escaped subjects are somehow responsible for Jacob's disappearance (though he put up a fight and injured one of them, leading to the blood) and Max's murder (with a homemade plastic knife).

I just hope that the virus isn't contagious...

Well, I emailed Hanna with my spec about the virus experiments. She replied...

That's... certainly a scary picture you've painted for me. I'm really glad that I can lock my door at night. You know, I don't think that I can even really joke about this one. I'm going to take this to...dammit.

Couldn't you have taken this to someone else? Really, I'm just a doctor. I didn't come up here to do an autopsy or fight evil chimpanzees!

Sigh. I came up here to talk to someone who isn't speaking to me. He's the only one I really trust to help me but I don't know if he'll listen. I'll try, and if he slams his door in my face I'll take this information to Cohen.

I wrote back and told her if Cohen laughs at her she can blame it all on some crazy woman back on Earth. Wink We'll see what happens....

Woohoo

Looks like we're making headway... Good Job! Keep us updated on your communications with Hanna, will ya? Sounds like we have a new partner in this fight.
