[PSP] Bold New Marketing Initiatives

Sony responds to PSP dead-pixel reports

Thinking of buying the hot new handheld console, Sony's PSP? You might want to be aware of the company's new tact: Make defective products, declaring the problems to be "features!"

Some were concerned when the Japanese release of the PSP featured a button that was sometimes unresponsive. "Wait!" shouted one intrepid executive. "I've got a much better idea - It's a design feature! In order to give you lucky customers a bigger screen, we overlapped the button with the screen. Um, yeah...its...its modern art!"

Of course, they wouldn't want us folks on the other side of the pond to feel left out, so they thoughtfully shipped a broken product included an artistic modification on US version too. Sure, thousands of LCD monitors and HDTV's are sold on a daily basis without this defect upgrade...but you did know that LCD screens are supposed to have a couple of pixels be permanently miscolored, right?

Rogue pixels, we call 'em. All the rage in Paris, you know. Sony's bold engineering will bring them to a home near you!

In 1982, Sony set a huge milestone by convincing the Supreme Court that BetaMax does not violate copyright. I guess this is an attempt to even out the karma by trying to make a warranty that allows them not to fix your screen. SCEA's advice to PSP owners:
We're sure you will grow to love your rogue pixels Smile
Please play your broken feature-rich handheld for a couple of weeks. If you decided that you still don't like having paid $250 for a product that we knew was broken but shipped to you anyway, you may then try to call customer support for help. Good luck getting it fixed, though...we've already made explicit mention of the feature in the manual, and remember that your warranty is limited.

*sigh* Common sense isn't.

That said, a few dead pixels is pretty much de rigour for LCDs.

This is another reason why you should stick to strictly American-made products.

Like the Edsel? Laughing

Alas, one or two stuck LCDs is going to be pretty common in a display that size. They're actually rather finicky to build... one of the reasons why the LCD TVs are still so pricey despite the huge LCD monitor market. The number scrapped on construction is appalling. (Though nowhere near as bad as plasmas' failure rate right now.)

You've just gotta hope that the dead pixels are near the edge of the screen so that they don't interfere with gameplay. If they do, that's when taking it back makes sense.

-- Steve learned, after two years in an auto plant, that North America has no special claim on quality of manufacture. *shudder*
