[META] Things to do

Some people have been asking for things to do.. here you go:

1- We need a Wiki, URGENTLY (everything below depends on it) (done here)

2- Create a Primer/Quickstart guide for new players

3- Someone to transcribe ALL the audio files in the mailboxes (people can reader through them faster than listening)

4- A high level timeline for LLR and Virgil.

5- A detailed section for each of LLR's cases, with links to the related files and emails

6- Known characters, bios, relationships to each other, again with links to e-mails when available

7- Get more players.. there's a lot of content in this game, and our collective brains our exploding

8- Get an exploding brain emoticon (done)

9- Solve the usernames/passwords" from Virgil's site (done here)

(Before you do anything go to #heist and make sure nobody else is doing it as well.. and where's that Wiki?)

Do you really want a Wiki or would a Guide/Trail suffice? jamesi and I are working on a Guide/Trail now: http://heist.smirkbox.com It's not complete, but we're slowly getting things up there. However, between talking in chat, putting updates in and real life, it takes a while. But, this game has been up for what - 4 days? I somehow get the feeling this game isn't going to be a sprint but closer to a marathon so I don't think we need to rush in headlong and try to have everything up NOW.

Item Number 1 on my list of things people should do is actually go through all the items in Nisha's, Ian's and Client files rather than just waiting for a Wiki or a Guide to catch them up. There is so much information and it's so beautiful to see that everyone should take the time and effort - the PMs obviously did. While you're doing that, you can try tracking down random leads, calling a phone number or transcribing a random phone call. jamesi and I are more than happy to put up player submissions on the Trail - just PM us with the information. I also hope that I can start getting a narrative going as to how the game progressed, how we found stuff and whatnot, but it's not a top priority at this point.

What is a priority is making sure all of the updates are mentioned. As soon as I can, I put the latest update on the Trail, #heist topic and on the boards here so that people know what the latest status is. But I think we all need to stop for a moment and take a breath. I really don't think the PMs went through all this trouble to make a game that lasts only a week or two. I'm fairly certain it's going to last and if we take our time in getting our footing established, we'll be better off in the long run than if we just built whatever we could to get us off the ground.

things to do

I think someone is making a wiki as well. But I agree that each player needs to read all the stuff, which is a pain because of the change in navigation.

But - can we add to the list "solve the usernames/passwords" from Virgil's site? The ones that came up from the game with putting the letters by the flower?

Or does that go as an unsolved puzzle?

I think that in the grand scheme of things, a Trail, Guide, and Wiki each have their own role which does not overlap. You said it yourself, putting the updates up takes a while, so an open Wiki would allow people to go in anytime. Also, some of the things suggested are collaborative efforts (see thread on Transcribed Audio which at the moment has two contributions.. in a Wiki environment, both people could have edited the same document which would flow in cronological order.

That being said, we've run games without wikis for ages, we've done games without trails, and we've used a forums only model many times. But whatever we create now has two purposes:
1- Make finding information easier (e.g. forum search vs trail menubar)
2- Make adding information easier (e.g. collaborative wiki vs manually updated pages)

However, what goes where needs to be defined.. and I think we should chat about this some more.

As to us taking our time, I'm not really sure.. there are several updates everyday, making it harder and harder for new people to come in. Which is why I stressed that more people should join this game now, and not later.

I think we solved the game too soon, with no leads to do so.. one of the passwords we even got by decompiling the flash. So following the PM's method of concealing things we're not supposed to see yet, the folders are password protected with a server side u/p which I don't think is ingame (sort of like what was on Ian's mailbox. We never got the username, access was just granted when the time was right.)

Ok: I suck, just suck at anything that is even slightly related with the ideas of "draw", "design" and "graphic".
Nonetheless, since the :brainexplodes: emoticon was my idea, At least I had to try.
So, here it is, in all its unbelievable crappiness:
http://www.geocities.com/luciaemarco/exploding-brain.gif
Use it, trash it, make fun of it, add it to the Unfiction forum emoticons, take it and improve it [reccomended], it's all yours.

It's very cute. I'm not an emoticon sort of person, even still, cute isn't what I'm feeling at the moment. Maybe someone who can animate gifs can make one that actually explodes.

things to do

"4- A high level timeline for LLR and Virgil."

I don't know about LLR and Virgil so much as Ian and Nisha and DJH4X and the Russians.

I think this is critical. I've given it some thought and can't decide if it's better to do it by date or by individual or by case. Or by all of the above.

Guides, trails, wiki's and quickstarts are all good. I like what they have in Perplex City: a moderated quick reference. I think it could be helpful to have a thread for each main character. I'm willing to work on something but don't want to duplicate anyone else's effort.

edit: I just found Varin's [case info] post and see that this is precisely what I want to work on and how I want to see our quick reference built. Nice work, Varin!

It's been brought to my attention that the "realms" of the protected areas are actually different. For example, when we weren't supposed to be somewhere it said "Login Please" and then it was removed.

However, if you write NAOKO in the game, it takes you to the naoko subfolder where the realm (the text when you try to log in) says "beloved".. So it ties in and should be ingame..

question

Eshan: So does that mean that you see the password protected stuff from Virgil's site as a log-in we will eventually have to solve? Or maybe it will be revealed to us when the time is right?

As I said before, someone is making a wiki, I remember they mentioned it in chat. I don't have the address, I think it may be on a real world gaming site.

And, Bill has always offered to let any game use the wiki software on his site at deaddrop.us.

I think we can get into it now, if we figure out the username/password.. there really seem to be lots of clues scattered on Virgil's site.. or it could be something obvious.. so start cracking

If we don't figure out who's doing a Wiki's let's just use Bill's.

I know it's not on here, but the Trail has several Case Information posts that were written by UF members. We're working on getting the rest up as well.

Would you (the trailmakers) mind if we had that information here too? I'm sure you're quite busy trying to catch up on the trail, so if you don't have the time I could copy some of it over here.

I don't mind. Let information be free!

I found those yesterday! They are exceptionally well done. Thanks to everyone working on this.
