Dale and Don at the funeral...Iris's account

Dear Pam,

Well, I do not know anything more about the 'Bruce and Angie'
relationship than I told you. They are both very interesting, if somewhat
two-dimensional, people. Mr. Abbott seems very particular and self assured while Angie seems very much obsessed with her appearance, though that may have only been because Mr. Abbott was there. Do you know that I told him he may call me Iris, but he never said that I may call him Bruce? It is a small thing, but I really think this is part of his mindset and is fairly telling. I think that certain people who know far too much about wine and other cultural things keeps people who are not of their station slightly below them, socially. Of course, I could be way off, but that is how I felt anyway.

Angie had not heard that Sal was the body they found? How odd. You
would think the family would know long before anyone else! Could she be out of the loop? Is there any possibility that Don does not trust her anymore? I know that she was doing some spying, so maybe he found out?

I apologize if I am rambling on a bit. I still have not gone to sleep
and fear I may be a bit loopy from exhaustion. The funeral was, in one
word, beautiful. Phyllis outdid herself putting the ceremony together and I do not think there was a dry eye in the house, even among those who had no direct relationship with Mr. Willingham. The boys and I were standing toward the back, since the Mayor and Mrs. Dobbs wanted to stand on either side of Phyllis during the ceremony. I was a little concerned about abandoning her to them, but she merely smiled, patted my hand and shooed me away when I asked her if she would be ok. You should have seen the look I got from Mrs. Dobbs. You would have thought that I had asked Phyllis if she thought they smelled or something.

Anyway, it turned out good to be where we were. We wound up watching
all of the people and were particularly drawn to where Don Marzano and Dale Sprague stood. Although both of them are quite different, they both seemed to draw the same sort of glances and whispers from those around them. There was one, very obvious difference, though. While Mr. Marzano arrived early and seemed to exude power, confidence and control, that all changed when Mr. Sprague arrived suddenly part way through the ceremony. Suddenly Mr. Marzano seemed angry, very angry and something else, not quite fear but similar in feeling to that emotion. Mr. Sprague, on the other hand, almost oozed determination and
confidence. He even turned to stare at Mr. Marzano as he took his
place across the gathering from him. The look those two gave each other
should have been enough to catch the nearby flowers on fire. I think it is fair to say that they are not fast friends.

As the service ended, we headed through the crowd looking for Phyllis
and happened upon a very strange scene. Chief Prufrock was standing in
front of Mr. Sprague and Wes, her finger in Mr. Sprague's face as she told him that she had been looking for him and he needed to go down to the station with her right then and there. James started forward to try and stop the scene, but Mayor Dobbs appeared and calmed Mr. Sprague and Chief Prufrock down. Wes has promised that Mr. Sprague would appear at the police station today. Wow, I would love to be a fly on that wall, wouldn't you?

Goodness, this email is much longer than I intended and I need to go
lie down before I all asleep on the keyboard and ruin my laptop. So much has happened in the last day that I just know I am leaving stuff out. Please feel free to write and ask me questions, I will try to answer them.

Oh, you have not told Mr. Abbott anything I told you about our meeting,
have you? I do not completely trust the man. There is just something off
about him. I am sure you feel I am withholding, but there are some things I do not wish to fall into the wrong hands, his specifically.

Iris

Sadly, I think Meaghan is the prize.
