[UNSOLVED] Jacob Jones Transmission

Start of a new thread to discuss Jacob Jones Transmission (from Chin Mae Park's files)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

For starters, the notes playing in the background are C, C, C#, C, C, D#, C, C, F

Presumably these will translate into a code that Jones has to input into the keypad

Jacob says there is a standard numeric keypad on the wall 0-9 could the tones be like a phone keypad code?

Transmission

Quote:
This is an S.O.S. beacon, set to repeat every half hour.

My name is Jacob Jones, I'm a research assistant on the HP Rosenthal Research station. I'm not sure where I am at present. I remember going out with Simon. We were headed toward Sector 8. That's it. That's all I remember.

Now I'm here… wherever here is. It's a small room. The walls… I think the walls are plastic, or something like that, I don't know. Maybe it's a joke… Did someone lock me in a closet? Very funny guys. It's been a day now, don't you think that's been long enough?

Playing with my (watch) was a nice touch though. Setting it a couple weeks forward. I know I haven't been gone that long. It's not possible.

Is anyone receiving this?

I still got the ration packs I was carrying around. I have enough food to last for while atleast. There's lights, but I'm not sure where it's coming from. There aren't any doors in here. No windows, no vents. No one answers when I hit the wall.

(YELLING) Can anyone here me out there? Hey! I know you're out there!

Someone has to hear me. No… no, come on. Keep it together, Jacob. Calm down.

Okay, there's something else in here. It looks like a keypad on the wall. Standard numeric. 0-9. It's making some noise. Here listen. Won't(?) do you as much good as it's done me. I don't understand it. It's sounds like it. But… I don't know. I think you're supposed to press the buttons? Not in order but…. I can barely think,

(YELLING) Hello? Hello?

Is anyone out there? If you're trying to prove that I'm not that smart, fine. You got me. Alright? You win, I lose. You're smart, I'm dumb. Okay? The jokes on me. Everyone have a laugh at Jocab and then let me out from wherever the hell I am. I'm not as dumb as you think I am. I know you all laugh at me.

Simon? Can you hear this? Did you do this to me, Simon? I'm sorry I was annoying you. Just let me out. I won't bother any of the minors again, I promise. I'll leave you guys alone.

I'm starting to think no one can hear me. I don't think that even if this message is getting past these walls… I'm going to set this in repeat mode. If you get this, anybody. If you have any idea how to get me out of this room. What I can do… transmit me back on this frequency. I'll leave the receiver on.

This is Jacob Jones signing off.

Considering the recent blog entry by Tim Cohen, maybe we should send this information to someone on board the station. Just a thought. I mean, unless we can figure out how to transmit back to the receiver.

[EDIT] I have e-mailed Garith about this transmission, since he seems to be someone who is "close" to Jacob. I told him that we are working on getting the frequency used in the transmission and that I would notify him when we get it so that he can talk to Jacob and tell him that we got his message and that we are working on the keypad thingy. I will post his responce here if it's at all interesting... if it's not I'll just post an edited version.

Oh, and I've also e-mailed Tim Cohen with this information along with the fact that Chin Mae Park is the one who has the recording. Maybe Tim can get ahold of it and see if it's real or not by letting someone who knows Jacobs voice hear it for themselves.

Something that I was thinking of....

Since I couldn't sleep, I thought about this whole keypad thingy. Here is an option that we can use.

1) We find someone who can act as a relay person between us and Jacob.
2) We tell that person to contact Jacob and tell him that we received his message.
3) We get Jacob to record the sound that each button makes (0-9),
4) We compare each noise to the noises found on the recording that we already have to figure out which numbers make up the combination (if we are correct in thinking that the sounds being made are in fact the combination).

Then it's just a matter of finding the right combination that will free Jacob. No matter what we do, I do feel that we are still going to need a relay person between us and Jacob since we don't know how to contact him directly (if that's even possible).

My vote is for either Garith or Ohmega. I'd rather choose the later since he/she seems to be helping us out when we get stuck and also because he has instructed us to tell him what we find (see.html).

What do you guys think?

Also, there is an extra C which comes after the long F. So, the updated version is either:

1) C, C, C, C#, C, C, D#, C, C, F or
2) C, C, C#, C, C, D#, C, C, F, C

What I found interesting was the pattern of 1, 3, and 5 (the C# is 1 key away from the C, D# is 3 keys away from C and F is 5 keys away from C... if you are counting the dark keys).

Also, since someone said that the notes might represent the keypad on your phone... I found this:

Quote:
Your friends will get a kick out of this: A telephone keypad (at least in the US and Canada) can be used to play music.

Here's how you do it.

Important: Dial your own phone number (you'll get a busy signal) before proceeding, so the digits you're pressing won't call someone!

With that out of the way, we can start making music. The north american phone keypad is wired like this: Moving RIGHT gives you a much higher note, moving DOWN gives you a slightly higher note.

Put another way, 4, 5, and 6 are your main notes; 1 is "4 flat", 7 is "4 sharp" etc.

It's amazing how many songs you can play with only three notes.

Mary Had A Little Lamb: 3212333, 222, 399, 3212333222321
Happy Birthday: 112132, 112193, 11#9632, 223121

There are many others and I'm sure this information is on google somewhere.

What this tells me is that if 4=C, 7=C# then 5=D, 8=D#, 6=E, 9=F
Which would turn out to be 4, 4, 7, 4, 4, 8, 4, 4, 9, 4 (that's assuming that 4=C ofcourse). We'd still need to know which keys make which sounds to be sure.

We should definitely tell NoMan - He is surely going to be more reliable than Garith, especially if Beth is right and he is "part of the sickness".

And I definitely think you're on to something with the phone keypad. We need to look into the notes that are actually played. But remember that F is the same as E#. So that gives us some more pattern to look at

C, C, C#, C, C, D#, C, C, E#, C

This probably translates to 4,4,1,4,4,2,4,4,3,4 - or something like that.

[EDIT] - Oops - as you said 4,4,7,4,4,8,4,4,9,4. Although I don't believe that its a simple as this...

Okay...

I thought # was sharp? I'm "musically challanged" so please update me. Also, I've edited my prior post a million times. But I won't be editing it anymore... I promise.

Our edits and updates kept clashing! The upshot is we both agree on the possible numeric representation! Phew!

I look forward to seeing what NoMan has to say.

I notice Jacob says the walls are made of plastic. In the email that started the game we have a reference to "plastic halls"

Quote:
Subject: 49276D20696E76697369626C652E

I walk through the plastic halls. I see you on your blue planet so far away. Your whispers, once a week bursts, tell me you think my home is your salvation.

Rejoice! Rejoice! You will use us, downtrodden miners and sterile scientists, as a stepping stone to the great beyond.

You don't see us as people at all. You should be ashamed.

Just like her.

I wonder if this was from NoMan also?

Update - A new transmission from Jacob Jones. He is clearly being communicated with by someone. He tried the "suggested sequence 1, 1, 10" - did anyone suggest that to him?

208304060247.mp3

Quote:

Whoever you are - I can hear you! I don't know who you are but...

I don't know why you're making your voice sound like that, but, I can hear you! Thank God!

(?? I got your loop ??) around Sunday, at 8. If you broadcast then I'll be listening for it, should get it.

I've still got some food but, I'll be honest with you, it isn't a whole lot. I keep beating on the walls, but no-ones come.

I tried your suggestion. I tried a sequence on the pad - 1, 1, 10 - but, godammit, nothing happened.

THIS NOISE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

But I think I can get outta here, with your help.

I think I've seen this pattern somewhere. It's familiar, but I don't know where. Maybe college? I'm calmer now but it's still hard to think.

I don't know if I can get out of here without your help.

Ok, look, I'm gonna try some more things. If you can think, I don't know, what buttons I can press, different sequence, something, maybe I'll get outta here.

If not, maybe you can punch that prick Simon in the face - make him tell you where he put me - that'd be faster. Not that I ever did see a pattern like this on the station. What are the odds that Simon knows some hidden part of the station?

I'm going to set this on braodcast, on a loop. I hope I can hear from you in a few days. I don't think I can last much longer in here.

This is Jacob Jones signing off.

Anyone like to guess (or tell!) how this is being done. Any thoughts on how to move forward?[/quote]

Could it be that NoMan is the contact with Jacob? He may be watching our forums ("watch the forums") and this could be our link to help Jacob? Its only spec though. Also is Jacob alluding to a visual pattern or the sound pattern.

10?

I thought that the numbers were only 0 - 9... where did this "10" come from? Or did he mean "1, 1, 0" (where 0 = 10)? We need to find out what Jacob studied in college. I think that's where the "key" to finding this is. However, I do believe that we might be correct in our 4, 4, 7... speculation, given the sequence that Jacob was using. I'm going to e-mail someone and suggest that as a possibility and see what happens.

Be back later.

often the first key in music is C. so maybe C is 1(one) ? but then where does ten come in?

Just noticed something else. It's only a snippet, but still. The name of the file for the first of Jacobs transmissions is 208303300247.mp3. This is clearly a date stamp - 02:47 on the 30th March 2083.

But, taking 0.3190 days as the rotational period of Phobos, this is 63 turns from midnight on 10 Mar - the day when Garith bumped into Beth. Cute. So that was when the test began...

(Well, very nearly - it's actually 20 days and 2.47 hours, rather than 2 hours and 47 minutes - but still...)

Oh good. I was wondering about that the other day - whether we'd missed something on March 30th.

Also, I wanted to say good job on this so far - I'm following it closely, but haven't had any other ideas so I haven't posted. You guys seem to be on the right track as far as I can tell. Hope someone hears back from NoMan soon (or whoever else you might have told about this).

[UNSOLVED] Jacob Jones Transmission

Could the music note keys be a phone number? Maybe we're supposed to call? Or give to NoMan?

Probably not...

sorry if that's a stupid question...

What have you guys found so far?

A hint? Perhaps....

Quote:
The trapped man, I find
Studied engineering, the way things move and turn
For that he studied the numbers behind all things.
The constants, the divine ratios, the keys to the mechanical kingdom.

Could this be the "key" to finding the answer to this strange puzzle? Mwuahhahaha! Cool

EDIT: This could mean that Jacob studied Mechanical Engineering in college. And since Jacob said that he might have seen something like this in college, I think this is the right direction to go.
