Mary Haynes Letter

Her responce to my e-mail about helping her:

Quote:
Thank you for your kind offer. Please don't think I was snooping here, I
just happened to record these two miners talking and I have no idea what they
were saying. I didn't even manage to see who they were! I'm
transcribing it here. Do you have any idea what they are saying?

*_ _*

Miner One: The pitch said scarper out and get us the Persians and we'll be
the pitch down below. I bet you could stand that eh? All the bees and frank you
can want and the grasshoppers won't be able to half-inch ya.

Miner Two: I don't know. That could end with us in the kitchen.

Miner One: I told you, no one is half-inching us. The pitch is on the babble and
it's robin. Just keep your yards on and wait for the dicky.

Miner Two: Oh like I'd do that. That pack of firsts treat us like ponies.

Miner One: Right. Just do your dog's knob and we'll be rolling in
poppy.

Any Ideas?

Just got that email too. Lots of ideas! Sounds like cockney rhyming slang to me (half-inch = pinch, kitchen = prison) - so hopefully this won't take too long.

Supposedly spoken by Londoners (more specifically, Cockneys, those born within the sound of Bow Bells) - although I've never really heard anyone really speaking it. However, many of the slang words are in common use now.

Try here http://www.cockneyrhymingslang.co.uk/default.asp

Here is how far I have got with the translation. There are some words I don't know yet

Quote:

Miner One: The boss said run out and get us the drugs and we'll be the boss down below. I bet you'd like that, eh? All the money and (porn?) you can want and the police won't be able to arrest you.

Miner Two: I don't know. The could end with us in prison. Just keep your (yards) on and wait for the word.

Miner One: I told you no-one is arresting us. The boss is on the radio and it's good. Just keep your (yards?) on and wait for the word.

Miner Two: I wouldn't do that. That pack of (firsts) treat us like (ponies)

Miner One: Right. Just do your job and we'll be rolling in (poppy)

Other words....

okay... "ponies" is "crap". "rolling in poppy" is "rich". "yard" is "pants". And I think that the "pack of firsts" mean the management aboard the staiton.

OK - so we have

Quote:
Miner One: The boss said run out and get us the drugs and we'll be the boss down below. I bet you'd like that, eh? All the money and (frank?) you can want and the police won't be able to arrest you.

Miner Two: I don't know. That could end with us in prison.

Miner One: I told you no-one is arresting us. The boss is is a crook and it's good. Just keep your pants on and wait for the word.

Miner Two: I wouldn't do that. The station management treat us like crap

Miner One: Right. Just do your job and we'll be rolling in money.

The only one I don't know for sure is frank - which can mean many things. I think the most likely here is Frank Bough = scoff = food. I'll try sending that to Mary and see what she thinks.

Okay...

And I'll e-mail her with "porn" as the translation and see what she says. One of us should be right.

I believe that's Beans and Franks. Haven't you ever had a can of Beans and Franks?
Anyway,
pretty sure that's what they meant...

Translation Updates

Babble = crook "on the babble = planning something crooked"
Yards = motor, engines

I still don't know what "pack of firsts" really means. I've looked everywhere and can't find it.

Just thought. "Pack of firsts" probably means the scientists (first class degrees). I'll email Mary a correction.

And any thoughts on "down below"? I wonder if it means the station they are constructing on the surface of Mars?

Yeah....

It would be more helpfull if Mary could reply with something like... "that sounds good, but I thought that I heard "ponies" meant something else. But I just can't remember what right this moment." Atleast that would be helpfull to finding the right answers and moving this thing along a little better. I mean, if you're wrong, they don't say anything to you. They just keep you waiting for an answer. And then you never really know what part you got wrong and what parts you are right about. I can only imagine what their "in-boxes" look like. Laughing

That's what I like about Ohmega. Atleast when it looks like you might be starting to "drift" away from the correct answer, he/she will step in and say something helpfull to you.

I realize that this is their first ARG, but darn, help a brother out once in awhile will ya? I'm starting to look a little wierd from staring at my screen for 8 hours. Shocked <--- self-portrait

Mary Responds... finally!

Quote:
Drugs? That's odd. There's no way to get drugs here except maybe
smuggled on a
transport, but the next one isn't scheduled to arrive for another six months.
Maybe someone has set up some sort of refining operation on the station? I
can't imagine how they'd do that without someone in the administration
noticing.

I'll keep an ear out for anything else unsual and send you any conversations I
can't understand. You've been so helpful with this one!

Might I add... I think someone in the administration is noticing and is involved. We'll have to wait and see I suppose.

Im not sure about the drugs part. Im thinking more like precious stones something like high quality diamonds. Reference the Simon Miller emails here

The reply from Blackbird Novelties says something about the purity of his currency. And everything he wants is easily paid for with such an object.

Perhaps they have found some really valuable jewels that they are smuggling off the station.

Down Below = earth? They would be quite the 'high rollers' if they had large amounts of extremely pure diamonds that they smuggled and stashed away.

Drugs

According to a few slang websites, the translation for "Persians" was, in fact, "drugs". This is why we used that translation in our responces to Mary.

True, but at the same time you didnt use Motor or Engine for Yards.

I was just thinking in the context of miners in space. What drug would they be able to get (off the station presumably) that would be more pure than you could get on earth.

True, in a lab you could make some really pure stuff, however, these are miners.

Not trying to sharp shoot here, just laterally thinking between boards. The Simon Miller connection. He has been elevated to a position of authority and is sending very pure objects to companies on earth as payment (not many legit businesses -- and of course the possibility is there that Black Bird is not legit, accept drugs as payment). Since they are all miners it is possible that they dug up something in space, rather than refining drugs that come from earth.

If Im mining trout then Im mining trout but I figured it was worth the thought.
