Just to chime in, I think what pissed me off most about Halo2 was the lighting. I'm talking single player here. There are levels in Halo2 that I just won't do, because I can't see what the hell is going on.

Not only that, but in Halo1, it actually felt like you accomplished something, when you finished levels. You escaped, you saved marines (or not), you got to the control room, you got the key, you saved Keyes, you blew up Halo.

Halo2? Not so much. Sure, you manage to do some stuff, but it felt more like you were just reliving a story, that had already been played out. Maybe I need to go back and replay it, but I know that when it comes to single player, I still get that rush of adreniline when I put in Halo1, and load up some of the levels. I don't think I've ever gotten that from Halo2.

Granted, I don't mind the repetativeness. Mostly because it makes it feel REAL. You go to a library in your town... it's repetative. You have shelves of books EVERYWHERE. Sure, sometimes there's something different thrown in, but you don't go in and get very varied scenery. That's why I think hte library feels right... if it really is a library, I'd expect it to be the same, over and over. Because that's how libraries are.

That goes the same with some of the other "repetative" parts of Halo1. Going though the moutain passes, and then going back through. Feels perfectly normal to me, because when you go someplace, you have to come back. And when you come back, the scenery hasn't changed. At least, it usually doesn't.

Also, in Halo2 there seemed to be a lot of waiting.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When you're playing as the Arbiter, you get on an elevator, and you spend 20 minutes (at least that's what it felt like) kill wave after wave of flood. You don't go anywhere. It certainly doesn't feel like I accomplished anything. I didn't manage to take a new position, like in the library. Nope, I'm still on the same elevator, and there's just more of the same flood coming in to kill me. Oh look, they're all dead. *wash, rinse, repeat*

And that's not the only time it happens. It feels like a lot of the game is them throwing enemies at you, because they can't think of anythign better to do. I know that seems silly, since a lot of FPS's are like that, but in Halo1, a lot of them seemed to have more PURPOSE. The enemy encounters felt more real. Not just like, oh, you haven't killed anyone in a while, so here are some guys.

I'm gonna stop now, because I could rant for a while on this, I think. Plus, I haven't played Halo2 single player in a while, so it might become better with a replaying.

Mind you, this is also biased because I played through on EASY, as to get the story out of the way so I didn't have to worry about spoilers. So I'm sure that has something to do with the sense of boredom that I remember when playing Halo2. However, I never feel that same sense of boredom playing Halo1 on easy... so take that as you will.

Oh man, that was the ONLY reason I hated The Library in Halo1! You can't see **** on that level! Sure, it's repetitive, but I don't mind that. But it was the only game ever that made me change brightness on my carefully calibrated TV, just because it was giving me headaches! I think there was 1 level on halo2 that was pretty dark, but I still think it's not as bad as the library! Oh, I worry about Doom3 on this aspect!

I didn't find the library that dark. It was dim, sure, but at least I could see the bad guys from a ways off.

And I KNOW there are levels later on in Halo2 that are at LEAST that dark. When you're inside the covenant city, most of the levels there seem to be in the dark, or with lotso lights going on and off, which is almost worse. I can't see any enemies until they're right on top of me in those levels, and trying to do the gun dance (following them as they move) is nigh impossible. Especially when they're they flood and move soooo fast. I end up running a way like a coward because I can't actually manage to kill them faster than they kill me.

Doom3 I won't mind as much, because I know going in it's going to be, and supposed to be, dark. Plus they give you a flashlight, for what it's worth. In Halo2, there's NO way to light up those dark areas. Well, maybe a grenade, but since you have limited supply of those, I don't recommend it.

Did you forget about the white button that turns on your light?

With MC yes, but the arbiter has no such device. That's one way humanity is more advanced than the covenant I guess.

Ummmm.... my flashlight broke it's bulb, and MC doesn't know how to change it?

(Yes, I did forget about this. Even so, it still doesn't give you a lot of illumination, and that's usually only up close. I still find the levels way too dark.)

I hate H2 single player solely because ILB showed me just how cool the Halo universe could have been if they'd done it right.

Multiplayer's fun though.

With the caveat that I've only played HaloPC and Halo2,

i had only placed HaloPC as well, until saturday (i picked up Halo 1 for 9 bucks when i got the xbox, but never even opened the package)

is it just me, or is the movement in H1 just smoother and faster than H2? both running and looking just go faster, even with my look-speed set to maximum on H2, its still not as smooth and responsive as H1

Halo pc has that same feel of doing nothing but having guys thrown at you just cuz you haven't done anything in a while, and the pc multi player is laggie. Halo pc doesn't compare to Halo1. There is relitively no lag with LANs and its fun spit-screen you don't get you 1/4 a screen filled up by "you picked up 1 nade, 75 battle rifle ammo, You sniped Halo0001, You sniped Halo0002, DOBBLE KILL, you sniped Halo0003, TRIPLE KILL,exc." plus you get the little things poping up for each snipe, stick, dobble/triple/exc kill, splatter, beatdown, exc. poping up taking up more space so you can't see a frigg'n thing. The Halo1 has the better split-screen but you can only get 4 boxes linked. With Halo2 you get the ability to get 16 boxes for a LAN if you dont want to spit-screen. This is perfect for XBC. But I will say the reason I don't like Halo2 as much is multiplayer is because I play it ALL the time. What I will say in Halo2's defence is that the AI is on a whole nother level. Also that EVERYONE expected it to be way better than Halo, but no one wanted to wait for it to become what they wanted it to be. If you have the special ver. in the DVD the ask the makers what they would have wanted, and they all said "more time". I think the fact that they put such an ambitous date for them to finish it up, and the fact that they had so much they wanted in but so much they couldn't make the date for makes the game not what it could have been.
What I will say about this is that with Halo1 (which I had been waitting for sence 1999 when I saw a vid of it) you got all that they wanted in. The had so much in Halo1 they didn't know what to do with. So they cut alot. The had a gatling gun, anamals, you could wave you gun to get the attention of enemys, they could surender, and there was more. The tweaked what they had and wanted and made it great(the microsoft had to buy Bungie). With Halo2 they had so many ideas but they ran out of time.
The campains have both their ups and downs. In Halo1 every thing was a new idea and seemed important. In Halo2 they made many new things happen to try and stay up to par with the other fps's and thus seemed slow and pointless. Like movieng objects in area and fully destructable environments. These are in every game now. Look at Half-life2. It has perfected everything (with the exception of dual wielding) that Halo2 has to offer. If you haven't played it I highly recommend it. Halo2 did have fun things in it like the bridge was a good idea, and the covie city was fun because it was new in every way.
Any way if you want to see that Halo vid I was taking about here it is... dang it its too big. Its 56 mb sry I'll try to post it somewhere or i could im it to someone(if they have the time)
