I don't see anything wrong with someone <18 coming to the city by themself, so long as they have lined up a place to stay and know who to get in touch with in case of a problem. I used to do it every day (from Queens), and this was in the old Koch/Dinkins days when it wasn't as safe as it is now.

Locals may have different arrangements with their parents; I do not want unaccompanied minors showing up at a bar because they think they'll meet other ARGers. And I really don't want them travelling any distance alone. This is just a bunch of people, many of whom have never met F2F, travelling to the same city. There are no resources for taking responsibility for other people's children.

CBGB's may be closing, Small's Paradise and the Bottom Line closed about a year ago, and the Wetlands closed a year before that. The Knitting Factory has been under corporate ownership for years. Birdland and Blue Note suck, and like the Village Vanguard, cost and arm and a leg to get in likewise. And Cleopatra's Needle sucks now that Miri left for bigger and better things.

Times Square and Broadway in general has been thoroughly Disney-fied, and most theatres are owned by ClearChannel now.

The live music scene in NYC is still, by a wide margin, the best in the world. But it's getting worse, not better, and I'm starting to feel old.

That is all.

Age limits

As for kids about 14, my son (who will be 15) will be around for at least part of ARGFest, as a life long New Yorker he knows his way around town. I plan on having him help give directions.

But I think aliendial is right that we can't take responsibility for children other than our own - if a parent agrees that it is ok for a kid to attend, preferably with a friend or two, then I don't have a big problem with it. How could I when my own son is going to be there?

I don't think our main group events will be in bars or restaurants that are not appropriate for teenagers as well. The minimum age for drinking in New York is 21 and we have a group of people youger than that - I think we were planning on having main events in bar/restaurant sorts of places.

If an ARGfester's parent wants to bring them, the parents are more than welcomed to join us too. If I recall the local lore correctly, DanmanD's dad brought him to the Las Vegas ARGFest and they won a prize.

danman's dad was very cool. Younger than several of us, happily took many of the group photos. Very understanding kinda guy. So yes, we mix well with sane adults who may not know exactly what we are talking about.

ARGFEST update

Here is the latest report:

1. I am ready to sign a contract with the Hotel Penn for a group rate. Tomorrow I will post the details, but please sign up so I can estimate how many rooms we will need. We can add rooms until a certain date that I will let you know tomorrow.

The advantages of the Hotel Penn:
a. Easy access to get around the city
b. Bar open until 4:00 am so people can have a last drink together and take the elevator upstairs. (anyone who wants to be out later than 4:00 am is on their own. Very Happy )
c. Some unfiction people are already staying there.
d. 24 hour restaurant.
e. The least expensive group rate I could find. The person in charge of booking groups will be a good resource if we have any complaints or problems.

Update: sorry to keep everyone hanging here, I had some meetings unexpectedly arise the past two days. I have an appointment tomorrow (thursday afternoon March 17 - assuming I can get across town in the St. Patrick's Day parade) to see where the block of rooms we get will be located. I post the group code for us to use as soon as I have it. Thanks

2. Some people are going to be in the city as early as Thursday night or Friday morning. We can make a plan for a group get together to tour some place, have lunch, etc. So sign up here . Signing up doesn't obligate you to anything. Anyone can participate in whatever they choose. But if you want to find some people to hang out with when you arrive, then sign up here.

3. We plan to have a brunch on Sunday morning-details to follow. After that, a few people--- baseball fans --plan to go to the Mets game, and other may want to do something else. If interested in the Mets-Dodgers game starting at 1:10 pm - sign up on this page .

4. One idea for Friday night is the cruise of New York Harbor, they have a DJ and dancing. Are people interested in this? If so, please give me a heads up by posting on this page.

5. joebrent trashes Ruby Foo's so I suggest that he and others submit alternatives. On the lower section of this page

finally

WE CAN START RESERVING ROOMS tomorrow - April 5th. Please make all reservations before July1st. We have 10 double rooms and 2 single rooms being held for us. We can add more rooms or have a room made into a triple if needed/

Here is the information on the Hotel Penn:

To reserve a room call: toll-free 1-800-223-8585
Tell them you are with the UNFICTION group to get our rate

The rate is:

$140 single
$140 double
$170 triple

Tax is 8.625% sales tax and 5.0% state tax plus $2.00 occupancy tax per night and $1.50 per night State Hotel Unit tax.

(stupid taxes)

Check-in time is 3:00pm and check-out time is 12:00pm. They will hold luggage before check-in.

Any problems PM me here. I suggest letting me coordinate any problems. If someone needs to get in touch with the Hotel Penn our contact at the Hotel Penn is Sonal Shah, corporate sales manager. Her direct number is 212-502-8163.

Planning chat

ARGFest Planning Chat

Now that we have the details about the hotel confirmed, we want to talk about some of the events. We have been putting together information behind the scenes but now we want to talk about the weekend schedule.

How about Monday April 11th at 8:00. In #unficion.

Everyone is invited, we need volunteers, ideas, fun stuff.

Cheers!

I will try to be there. I'm assuming 8:00 pm at GMT -5? (EST, no?)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the chat. Sad

I know that I'm tasked with the poker game organization, and all information can be found on the wiki, here. If you have any questions, or anything to add, feel free to modify the wiki or send me a PM/email through the forum.

I'm still hoping it can be done Saturday night because softball playoffs are being held on July 22, and if my team makes it that far, I won't be in town until the 23rd. Also, I've volunteered my room to play in, and I will bring my chip set.

As far as the rest of the events go, I'm sure someone will post a summary of what is decided upon during the chat.

A huge and sincere to everyone involved in planning this extravaganza, especially rose, JoeBrent, and bagsbee. They rock!

chat time

Thanks Lou.. I am sure poker can be on Saturday night. Not sure if we should root for you to win or lose at softball though.

Anyway, bagsbee asked for the time to be at 10:00 EST on Monday.

I think that works out better for everyone on the West Coast too.

So we can chat in #unfiction at 10:00 EST (or are we on EDT?) on Monday? Time zone is GMT -5:00 hours.

I, ah, just got offered an internship. In Bermuda. These wacky people are gleefully paying me to spend two months in Bermuda. God, I love internships.

It's a difficult decision...ARGFest? Bermuda? Bermuda? ARGFest?

The only reasonable conclusion is...ARGFest Bermuda! I suggest that you all come visit me. Cool

(Sorry. Sad)

If you don't pick Bermuda you're crazy. I absolutely love that place.

Congrats, Omnie! Jetpack

It's really the only possible option.
