Currently reading that book Wink

I have to say though that all of the games and ideals of the Perplex City inhabitants reminds me a lot of the 'Culture' from Iain M Banks books.

yeah, some elements of the Perplex City setting reminds me of the enviroment described in Consider Phlebas.

What a great reference. Maybe someone from earth will get to play Perplex City's game, and see how well we fare.

Although that's probably reaching considering it's just one name so far. But it would be really cool.

Just had a look at Adrian Hon's blog. I one of his favorite authors is indeed Iain M Banks. You can sort of tell that Iain Banks was an influence, especially with the whole puzzle society and cognitive enhancers. Just read Player of Games.

Read three so far favorite is: Consider Phlebas. Oh and I just love some of the drones in the books, minds are pretty cool too though Wink

Excession rules, especially in it's description of stuff like OCPs, and pretty much everything the Grey Area does. Player of Games is cool, but if you're looking for a read where you need to make a serious effort to keep on top of the story then Use of Weapons will make your brain work hard.

Use of weapons is a good thinking book, after reading the last couple of pages I spent the rest of the day rethinking the whole novel.

Anyway, just some more trivia as I'm reading the 'Player of Games'. Turns out Azad is a game they play on a planet called Azad. There is no distinction between the game and real life, and if you are good at the game of Azad you wil be more likely to get a better job etc.. ,the winner of the game as a whole governs the planet. I've been looking everywhere for Consider Phlebas... Public libraries suck for finding sci-fi books.

I'm starting to think that the game (in PPC) and the Cube are related in some way. I'm sure a lot of things are different in PPC just for the hell of it, but there must be a reason that the game is so important. Azad was even a religion -- and look at the cubists. But this is all wild spec.

I really want to play the game though.
